On Monday, our Year 11 GCSE History students battled on despite the
torrential rain during their visit to Ludlow Castle to investigate the construction of
the castle between the 11th and 16th centuries.
We have presented the first of our rewards to Year 11 students who have been
recognised for improved effort in their GCSE revision and studies; these students
received free tickets to this year’s Prom in July. We have been very well supported
by local businesses who have donated a number of prizes which will be awarded in
the coming weeks. We would like to extend our sincere thanks for their generosity
in helping us with this project.
Praise parties have been held this week for students meeting our high standards for
attendance and behaviour in school. Students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 were invited
along to a party in the hall during AcTu. Year 7s also enjoyed a trip to Tenpin in
Worcester for making such an excellent start to the year.
Students have been auditioning for our ‘Talent Show - Take 2’ this week. A number
of students who were not able to take part in the show before Christmas have had
the chance to perform a number of creative pieces for the show today to fellow
students.
We have held yet another successful ‘Bring and Buy Cake Sale’ in aid of Comic Relief
today. Students and staff on the main school site and VIth Form College brought in
a wide array of home-baked and shop bought cakes, biscuits and cookies which sold
out in minutes during brunch and lunch breaks. We will be able to announce the
grand total raised next week and in the meantime, we would like to thank everyone
for their kind donations.
From everyone here at SHS, we wish you all a great weekend.

9am - 3:30pm
As part of their ‘History Around Us’ unit, our Year 11 GCSE students have visited Tenbury Castle in Worcestershire, Wigmore Castle in Herefordshire and Ludlow Castle in Shropshire. Students had to collect evidence which would allow them to evaluate the extent to which the development of Ludlow Castle between 11th and 16th centuries was typical of castle development during this period. In preparation for the visit, students used pictorial and documentary sources to reconstruct the most common castle built by the Normans, the Motte and Bailey, in the long jump pits of the Stourport Sports Club.
Torrential rain in the Welsh Marches did not deter our budding historians from collecting the data they needed to write up their 2,000 word Controlled Assessment.

Praise Parties
Year 11 Celebrating Success Red Nose Day Cake Sale Students and staff were excited today to bring and buy a delicious
array of cakes and biscuits from our cake stalls on the school
restaurant and the VIth Form Canteen.
We learned that proceeds from Comic Relief events including ‘Red
Nose Day’ go to help communities both here in the UK and across
the world. Locally, a charity called ‘Wyre Forest Nightstop’ has
received thousands of pounds in funding to provide safe,
emergency temporary accommodation for homeless young people
between the ages of 16 and 25 in the homes of trained volunteer
hosts. These ‘Nightstop hosts’
provide a bed for the night, an
evening meal, washing facilities,
breakfast and most importantly,
a caring environment and a
listening ear.
It is important for us to inspire
and empower our students
through the sharing of
knowledge and by doing so our
students can learn to respect
others no matter what their
situation and become valued
members of the community.
After completing the gruelling February Mock Examinations,
our Year 11 students are on the final run into the summer
examination season. In order to give our students some
extra motivation over the next few months, we will be
running a variety of reward schemes on the theme of
‘Celebrating Success’ culminating in the Year 11 Prom which
takes place in July. The first set of prizes are free Prom
tickets for students who have improved the most during the
Mock Examinations. All students have the chance to win
and staff are rewarding students for excellent effort with
Golden Tickets. The winners’ names will be drawn and
prizes presented in the Year 11 Celebration Assembly every
Monday and will include a number of team prizes which
have been donated by local businesses including haircuts,
cinema tickets, pizza vouchers, free breakfasts, a pamper
evening, cupcakes and gym passes. We look forward to
announcing the winners’ names in the coming weeks.
Parents’ Evening Year 8
The Year 8 Parents’ Evening taking place later this month
will now be booked using our new on-line booking system.
Letters were sent home last Friday to parents/carers with
full instructions of how to use the system. If you do not
have Internet access at home, please call on 01299 872950
to arrange your appointments over the telephone.
This week students have been invited to Priority
Ticket ‘praise parties’ with Year 7 and 8 taking place during academic tutoring (AcTu) on
Wednesday 22 March followed by Year 9 and 10 on Thursday 23 March. These parties celebrate
the successes of students that have consistently
met our high standards of attendance and behaviour so far this academic year. Parents of
these exceptional students will have also received a letter by mail from their child’s Senior
Director of Learning with a Priority Ticket to a Creativity Trip attached. This is to ensure they
are first in line to book a place on the trip they
wish to go on at the end of the academic year. We are very proud that so many students
received this accolade which is testimony to their hard work and dedication to their studies.
