A MESSAGE OF LOVE In the final verses of today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correction is al-ways undertaken with Jesus present to us. Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The Lord tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he “does not speak out” to dissuade a person from evil, then he too will be held responsible. We live in a “do your own thing” age when moral objectivity is often ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is one of love, our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As St. Paul writes, “Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law” TODAY’S READINGS: Ezk 33:7-9; Ps 95; Rom 13:8-10; Mat 18:15-20

T N B V M The Church has celebrated Mary’s birth since at least the sixth century. A September birth was chosen because the Eastern Church begins its Church year with September. The September 8 date helped determine the date for the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8.

Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s birth. How-ever, the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James fills in the gap. This work has no historical value, but it does reflect the development of Christian piety. According to this account, Anna and Joachim are infertile but pray for a child. They receive the promise of a child who will ad-vance God’s plan of salvation for the world. Such a story, like many biblical counterparts, stresses the special pres-ence of God in Mary’s life from the beginning.

Reflection We can see every human birth as a call for new hope in the world. The love of two human beings has joined with God in his creative work. The loving parents have shown hope in a world filled with travail. The new child has the potential to be a channel of God’s love and peace to the world. This is all true in a magnificent way in Mary. If Jesus is the perfect expression of God’s love, Mary is the foreshadowing of that love. If Jesus has brought the full-ness of salvation, Mary is its dawning. Birthday celebra-tions bring happiness to the celebrant as well as to family and friends. Next to the birth of Jesus, Mary’s birth offers the greatest possible happiness to the world. Each time we celebrate her birth, we can confidently hope for an increase of peace in our hearts and in the world at large.

Jun-to al nacimiento de Jesús, el nacimiento de María ofrece la mayor felicidad posible al mundo. Cada vez que celebramos su nacimiento, podemos esperar con confianza un aumento de la paz en nuestros corazones y en el mundo en general.

Our Lady of Guadalupe church will have a special Mass, starting with the recita-tion of the rosary at 10:00 am followed by the Mass at 11:00 am at the Shrine Pavilion on Brundage. Please join us to ensure that our unborn brothers and sisters will not be forgotten. Attendance is limited to 300 guests on first-come, first-serve basis.
