Monthly Reflection
Saved by the Death of my Son
Thursday, November 7 | 6:30PM
Presented by Judy Stivaletta, the reflection is, "a witness to God's love, mercy and His amazing power that awakened me to His love. I experienced an encounter with Him during the most tragic time of my life: the loss and death of my son, Justin who died from addiction.”
It is a witness to hope during tragic and hard times.
A Message from Fr. Paolo
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This Sunday’s readings invite us to reflect on the
many different aspects of prayer and deepen our
understanding on the importance of our personal
dialogue with God. The first reading reminds us that
“the Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to
the widow when she pours out her complaint.” (Sir
5:14) “The orphan” and “the widow” in this passage
represent all the ones who are in need and raise their
voices to God for help. Formulations and ways to
pray can vary but the tradition of the Church
highlights four basic elements of prayer:
Prayer of Praise, Blessing and Adoration. In this
prayer we express praise and honor to God, giving
glory to Him for His own sake. We praise God for
giving us life, for the wonder and beauty of our
world, and for all the many blessings we enjoy.
Adoration is the first attitude of man acknowledging
that he is a creature before his Creator.
Prayer of Petition. This is probably the most
familiar prayer form of prayer. The first “movement”
of the prayer of petition is actually asking for-
giveness, like the tax collector in the parable in to-
day’s Gospel: “God, be merciful to me a sinner!”. In
praying we have to remember to subordinate our little
designs utterly to the great purpose of God, as Jesus
taught as when he prayed: “Father, if you are willing,
take this cup away from me; still, not my will but
yours be done.” (Lk 22:42)
Prayer of Intercession. This form of prayer is prayer
on behalf of others. “The intercession of Christians
recognizes no boundaries: "for all men, for kings and
all who are in high positions," for persecutors, for the
salvation of those who reject the Gospel.” (CCC
2636)
Prayer of Thanksgiving. We often ask a lot but
maybe don’t thank God enough for his gifts to us.
This form of prayer helps us to be grateful for God's
many blessings, spiritual and temporal: “give thanks
to the Lord for He is good, His mercy endures
forever.” (Ps 118:1)
