Salutations to the three-eyed lord who wears the king of snakes as his garland; whose body is smeared in ash; is the great Lord; is eternal and pure; wears the directions as his garment; and embodied as the syllable na.
mandAkinIsalila candanacarcitAyanandIshvara pramatha-nAtha mahEshvarAya |
mandAra pushpa bahu pushpa supujitAyatasmai makArAya namah shivAya || 2 ||
I bow to Lord shivA, who is bathed by the waters of mandAkini (gangA); is anointed with sandalwood paste; is Lord of nandi and the gaNAs; is the supreme Lord; is worshipped with flowers such as mandAra and many others, and embodied as the syllable ma.
shivAya gaurI-vadanAbja-vrindasuryAya dakshAdh-varanAshakAya |
shrI nIlakanTAya vrisha-dhvajAyatasmai shikArAya namah shivAyA || 3 ||
Salutations to the all auspicious shiva, who is the sun that causes the lotus face of pArvati to blossom; the destroyer of dakshA’s yagjna and ego. Salutations to the blue-throated one, who’s flag bears the emblem of the bull, embodied as the syllable shi.
vasishTa-kumbhOdbhava gautamAryamunIndra-dEvArchita shekharAya |chandrArka vaishvAnaralocanAya
tasmai vakArAya namah shivAya || 4 ||
I bow to Lord shivA, adorned by mandAkini (gangA), sandalwood paste, lord of nandI and the gaNAs; worshipped with the most fragrant of flowers (ex: mandAra), and embodied as the syllable ma.
yaksha-svarUpAya jaTAdharAyapinAkahastAya sanAtanAya |divyAya dEvAya digambarAya
tasmai yakArAya namah shivAya || 5 ||
Salutations to Lord shiva who bears the form of a yakshA; with matted locks and the powerful pinAka bow. Salutations to that primeval Lord, brilliant and bare- bodied, embodied as the syllable ya.
phala shruti:
panchAksharamidam puNyam ya(h) paTEcchiva* sannidhaushivalOkamavApnoti shivEna saha modatE
One who recites this sacred five-syllabled mantrA in the presence of Lord shiva (near his shrine), will attain his abode and be one with him.
*paTEt + shiva becomes ‘paTEcchiva’
