THIS inspiring account by the brains behind the thriving, uMlazi-based Sweety- Nu-4u Enterprise, Thandeka Xaba, is just one of many testimonials to just how successful the City’s SMME Fair initiative has been. Marking its 10-year milestone this year, the eThekwini Municipality’s Business Support Unit is shifting up its gear in preparation for the annual Small Business Fair to be hosted at the Durban Exhibition Centre from 19 – 21 September. The main SMME Fair, backed with funding of R2.5 million, follows five successful regional fairs hosted jointly with the Area Based Management teams in the South Durban Basin (SDB), INK (Inanda/ Ntuzuma/ KwaMashu) and rural areas in which some 340 exhibitors and more than 6 000 visitors participated. In celebrating 10 years of success this year, the main Small Business Fair promises to be the best yet. Philip Sithole, Head of the Business Support Unit said: “This year we have a plan to take the Fair to a higher level. We are hoping to increase the number of exhibitors. “We have a very exciting small business conference, business linkage programme, and one-on-one business meetings between small businesses and corporate executives planned.” Sithole said a list of high profile guest speakers was lined up for the conference, including Durban Chamber President Moses Tembe, KZN Minister of Economic Development and Finance, Dr Zweli Mkhize, the CEO of Pamodzi Investments Ndaba Ntsele, the CEO of McCarthy Holdings, Brand Pretorius and the Zico CEO Sandile Zungu. The popular Business Linkage Programme is on the cards again. This process enables SMMEs to meet with big industry players and introduce their services and products to the procurement officers. “The meetings between small businesses and big businesses are pre- arranged, so if you would like to participate, please register without delay,” Sithole said. Small Businesses are encouraged to participate in the conference. Some of the key issues to be addressed include the City’s programme on 2010, Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment and its implications for small businesses, government procurement processes, support programmes and access to finance, and global trade issues that affect small businesses. Another innovation introduced as part of celebrating 10 years of SMME fairs is the competition for best exhibitor. The winner will be given the opportunity to exhibit overseas. The Business Support Unit will also provide extensive training on how to exhibit, mentorship during the exhibition, and an after-care programme. The eThekwini Municipality will present its budget expenditure to give SMMEs an overview of the projects to be implemented by Council. The participation of Durban’s sister cities will add another exciting dimension to the SMME Fair, offering SMMEs the opportunity to network and create links with overseas markets. In 2007 the SMME Fair attracted 350 exhibitors, and about 3 000 visitors a day. 32 businessbeat Showcase your business “Judging by its string of successes over the last decade - I think it’s high time that the eThekwini Municipality’s Small Business Fairs initiative becomes a national driving force behind the development of South Africa’s emerging entrepreneurs.
