SADDLES & STEAM 2019HORSE POWER TO HORSE POWER
This weekend you will find a fantastic selection of demonstrations and exhibits. Celebrating every mode of transport from our four legged friends to the invention of the combustion engine. This Summer event will be packed with horse displays, a wide and varied range of steam engines, World War vehicles and classic cars to name just a few; not to mention lots of family fun with miniature steam engines and model boats.
There is a full programme of arena displays plus demonstrations throughout the Museum in our historic buildings. Each activity has a location reference which corresponds to the map on the centre pages of this programme. All displays and timings are subject to change.

Spring Cultivations • Horse drawn demonstrations showing

What’s on?• NOT TO BE MISSED – our own D-Day commemoration at 2:30pm (C15). The
Portsmouth Model Boat display team will be bringing a piece of 20th century history to life involving radio controlled ships, landing craft, tanks and miniature pyrotechnic effects.
• Step back in time with the 23rd Sussex Home Guard who will be re-enacting the work of the Home Guards during World War II by (C13).
• Visit James Horton’s Village Green Fair, ride the steam driven Gallopers, try the Austin Car ride and hook a duck to win a prize all to the sounds of the magnificent Gavioli Fairground organ.
• Tour round the many vintage and classic cars on display, speak to their owners and hear all about their history.
• Stop by the Showmen’s living wagons and vintage caravans and browse the many motorcycles displayed by the Sussex Motor Cycle Club and BSA Club.
• Explore the model boats, trains and railways in residence across many of the Museum’s historic buildings. Be sure to stop by the huge model railway in the Gridshell. (D1)
• Take a walk up to the wood yard where a steam driven saw bench will be working throughout the weekend. (W1)
• Don’t forget to hop on the steam railway giving rides for the young and young at heart by the arena.
On Saturday only: • See an outstanding collection of vintage double decker buses situated in our Middle
Gonville Field collection of vintage double decker buses.
On Sunday only:• The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Portsmouth Region is holding its annual club event at the
show. Enjoy a display of old and new Jaguars in Middle Gonville Field.

Van Buren presents a fun & baffling show for all of the family, which not only entertains but also answers many of the questions about magic – where did it all begin? Can somebody float in mid-air - before your very eyes? Is mind reading possible & will Van Buren escape from Houdini’s Challenge?

Van Buren’s Circus Skills Workshop:Drop in to have a go at the circus skills workshop for all the family in our magic tent. Come and try your hand at plate spinning, diablo, hula hoop and more, all under the tuition of international performers Andrew Van Buren and Allyson on the Theatre Stage.

Health & SafetySteam shows can be dangerous, Admission is on the understanding that all spectators undertake to comply with all warning notices and to act upon the instructions of all marshals whenever asked to do so, every precaution has been taken to ensure the safety of the public attending this event.Farm animals carry the potential risk of E. coli O157 – contact with animals and their faeces should be avoided. Please wash your hands with soap and water at the toilet blocks marked on the map in the centre pages.Smoking is prohibited in our buildings and in the open spaces and fields within the Museum site. Visitors may smoke in the car park only.First Aid, Emergencies & Lost Children: seek assistance from the First Aid & Lost Children tent in the events field, at the Museum Shop (A1), or speak with any of our staff or volunteers who all wear name badges and staff lanyards.Children must be supervised at all times – please take extra special care of children during your visit. Please do not allow children to climb trees or to enter the mill pond.Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a short lead (lock extending leads at a short length) and under control at all times. Please clean up after your dog and keep them away from animals and birds. Please do not allow dogs to enter the mill pond.Toilets and accessible toilets are marked on the map in the centre pages. They are situated at the visitor centre (A3), near the market square (behind M2), behind Longport Farmhouse (D3) and in the cattle shed from Kirdford (S6). Portable toilets are also located by the car park entrance. Baby change facilities are located inside the new visitor centre toilets (A3) and in the accessible toilet near the market square (behind M2).

• Weald & Downland Cafe café (A3): head to the Museum’s waterside café and enjoy lunch or perhaps a rare breed sausage roll overlooking the mill pond. Dogs are welcome in the first section of the café and on the deck

buildings from across south east England. See the map in the centre pages
• Don’t miss our Visitor centre (A2) where you will find our fascinating introductory galleries, shop and café
• Take a tour of the Downland Gridshell Building (D1) where model railway demonstrations will be located and where our fascinating artefact store can be seen at 2pm
• Meet our working animals! See our Sussex oxen, Sol and Saxon, at Bayleaf Farmstead (B1), visit our heavy horses, near (S1) and our Shire and Percheron boys near the stables (S10).

Old Herbaceous (ticketed)24 AugustDescribed as ‘Downton Abbey with gardening tips’, this play is the humorous love story of a single-minded yet gentle man with passion for plants.
Historic Life Weekend: Textiles31 August-1 SeptemberFind out about the production of textiles, with a focus on wool and flax, as well as the later stages of spinning, weaving, braiding and natural dyeing. There is much to inspire modern makers from the skills of the past.
Historic Life Weekends: Fire & Light 2-3 NovemberToday we can come home to a house that can often be heated quickly, with the means to cook rapidly and light at the flick of a switch. A walk through the Museum will give a better idea of how homes in the past were lit and heated.
