Our Christmas Market is one of West Sussex’s most well-known Christmas events, providing in the region of 12,000 visitors with not only quality locally produced food and drink, but festive gifts, unique homewares, Christmas decorations, handcrafted jewellery and more.
Today, throughout the Museum, you’ll find tasty food to satisfy any appetite; enjoy hot roasted chestnuts or indulge in quality chocolate, grab a delicious hog roast or some fish and chips, visit our Waterside café, or try locally produced cheese and warm yourself up with a glass of mulled wine while you browse.
Don’t forget to pick up our 2020 calendar of events, as next year we will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary.
Wishing all our wonderful visitors a very Merry Christmas!

Tree Dressing
1 December10.30am - 4pmTree Dressing is a magical occasion for all the family, celebrating the importance of trees in our lives. Turn a jam jar into a lantern and join the procession illuminated by hundreds of lanterns to dress the aspen tree as darkness falls. The day’s finale takes place, with a spiral dance and singing around the aspen tree, which is then dressed with all the lanterns made earlier in the day. Younger visitors are well catered for, with lantern making, headdress making and crafts. Winter warmers on offer will include mulled apple juice and spiced biscuits!
Christmas at the Museum
26 - 27 December10.30am - 4pmChristmas is a wonderful time to visit the Museum. From Tudor to Victorian times, a historic festive treat awaits visitors, when our traditionally decorated houses will reflect the spirit of Christmas through the ages. Come and see how this special time of year has been celebrated over the centuries. Enjoy a warm welcome in the medieval house from North Cray, with its log fire and traditional greenery decorations. Our team will be serving spiced apple juice as well as spiced biscuits, donations are welcome.
Wassailing
18 January12pm - 3pmCome and bless the Museum’s orchard at our Wassailing event! You can join a procession, with music, songs and short performances, from the market square to the orchard for the wassail to ensure a good harvest. In the orchard an apple tree will be decorated. The audience joins in with the ‘Wassail’ shout and makes lots of noise with bells, rattles or whistles! Wassailing in the orchard is free, with entry to the Museum, but places are limited and must be pre-booked at one of the three 50-minute sessions: 1pm, 2.15pm or 3.30pm.
