    About the Composer

    Henry Fillmore 1881 - 1956

Henry Fillmore was born in Cincinnati, Ohio as the eldest of five children. Helearned to play many instruments but kept his trombone activities a secret at first,as his conservative religious father believed it an uncouth and sinful instrument. He

began composing at 18, with his first published march "Higham", named after a lineof brass instruments.

Fillmore entered the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1901. After graduating hetravelled the United States as a circus bandmaster with his wife, an exotic dancernamed Mabel May Jones. They were married in St Louis.

After a very successful career as composer and band leader, Fillmore began an active retirementin Miami, Florida in 1938. He was given an Honorary Doctorate of Music by the University of Miam

in 1956 in recognition of his career. Fillmore lived out the rest of his days in South Florida. abstracted from Wikipedia.

    About the Editor

    John Bentley b. 1934

John Bentley pursued a successful career in banking and auditingand is highly regarded by his colleagues. Music is an avocation.Following in the steps of some of our fine self-taught composersof the past, John taught himself to enter music into Sibelius in

order to tidy up some old hand written scores for the City of PerthBrass Band for which he has been librarian for a quarter century. Thus a new talent was discovered. Johns attention to detailmanifests itself in the quality of his score and parts.

Further keen interests include listening to classic jazz.

    Bill Park

Bill Parks participation in this new edition ranged from proof-reading to offering suggestions andideas for J. Bentleys consideration in putting together this brand new edition of Shoutin LizaTrombone from the golden age of the town band.

    About the Music

Shoutin Liza Trombone After Henry Fillmore invented the Trombone Smear, he began tocreate a whole set of pieces exploiting the unique ability of the trombone to slide or glissando. Anearly title for the current piece was Hallelujah Trombone named for Handles Hallelujah Chorus

which is quoted as a main motif from the opening trombone sounds and continuing freely fromthere. As the set of smears grew, Fillmore titled them as members of a metaphorical familyincluding cousins uncles and siblings The name was changed to Shoutin Liza Trombone at
