Alamance‐Burlington Middle College Bonnie Roane, Principal
ABMC students are headed for national competition! A team of Alamance‐Burlington Middle College (ABMC) students earned second place in the prestigious National History Day competition for North Carolina held in Raleigh at the North Carolina Museum of History on April 27. This year’s topic for the competition was A Turning Point in History. Melanie Campbell, Sabrina Otero and Victoria Delaney from ABMC created and presented a dramatization about the turning point that modern birth control created for women. Earning one of the top state‐level awards qualified the team for national competition that will be held at the University of Maryland at College Park, June 9‐13!
Each year, over 500,000 students across the nation participate in National History Day by choosing a historical topic related to an annual theme for the competition and conduct extensive primary and secondary research including library and archive documents, museum and historic site exhibits, and oral historical interviews. After analyzing and
interpreting their findings, student competitors present their work in performances, documentaries, websites, exhibits and original papers at regional, state, and finally, national competition. Wayne Beam was the guest speaker for ABSS School Nurse Day Celebration on May 8, 2013. Wayne retired from ABSS in 2009 as Executive Director of School Administration. Prior to that position he served ABSS as principal for many years at several different schools. He has served as Interim Principal 7 times during his “Retirement”. In the guest speaker introduction, Gaile Bowling, School Nurse at Western High School, described Wayne as a well respected leader. We were honored by his presence and thoroughly enjoyed his informative and light hearted presentation. Wayne’s genuine concern for the well being of children is an inspiration to

others! ABSS School Nurses appreciate and salute all ABSS Staff for your continued support of the School Nurse role. We are grateful for the leadership and support we receive from Central Office Administrators, Dr. Pettiford and Dr. Thorpe. We are especially appreciative of the tireless efforts of our Lead Nurse, Lucy Kernodle. Working together keeps our children healthy and ready to learn!

Broadview Middle Lynell Brown, Academic Coach
Broadview staff members put our best foot forward to participate in the March of Dimes walk in Burlington on Saturday May 4, 2013. Ms. Sabrina Crump‐ Bryant organized and raised money for this worthy cause and we are so proud of all of our team members for completing the walk and demonstrating strong community support. Way to Walk, BOBCATS!!
South Mebane Elementary Tammy Yeatts, Assistant Principal
During the fall of the 2012‐2013 school year, our art teacher Lauri Daughtry organized our school’s first art club. This group of students wanted to give back to the school by creating a lasting art piece that would hang in the school. Members of the art club chose to work as a group to create a batik quilt. Batik is a cloth that is traditionally made using a manual wax‐resist dyeing technique. The batik quilt created by the members of the club represents work completed over a semester including design and implementation of the batik technique.
The art club members chose to design images that would be a reflection of the school’s motto, “Love, Laughter, & Learning,” as well as state symbols. Following the multiple waxing and dyeing processes, the squares were ironed flat and assembled into a quilt. A friend of South Mebane Elementary graciously stitched the squares to create the quilt. Ms. Daughtry and the art club students presented the quilt to Mrs. Royal on Tuesday, April 30. The quilt will be presented to the school during our end‐of‐year awards presentation!

ABSS Core Teams Jodi Hofberg, Lead Teacher Secondary Math On Monday, May 13, members of ABSS Secondary Core Teams shared the successes of the district‐wide program with Board of Education members. Pictured L to R: Leslie Horne Graham High, HS Science Core Team; Brent Philpson, Hawfields Middle, MS Social Studies Core Team; Melaine Rickard, Turrentine Middle, MS Science Core Team; and Dayson Pasion, Graham Middle School, MS Science Core Team shared their reflections on the positive impact the teacher‐led initiative has had on implementation of Common Core Standards with over 240 teachers participating on a total of 9 different teams. Newlin Elementary Angela Lynch, Assistant Principal Recently Harvey Newlin Elementary students participated in raising money to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society event "Pasta For Pennies". This event was facilitated by our guidance counselor Ms. Holly Houglan, our Distinguished Gentleman's Club, our nurse Brenda Warren, and our guidance counselor intern Leslie Gilman. Our students did an awesome job raising a grand total of $2,452.68!!!!!! We had 8 classes collecting over $100 and were awarded with pendants to post on their doors or in their classrooms. Pictured is our class which raised the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. Ms. Sherill's & Ms. Simmons 1st grade received the highest award that could be received They received and a catered Olive Garden lunch for their entire class. Ms. Sherill's and Ms. Simmons students raised $300.73! WAY TO GO WILDCATS!!! Thanks for supporting our community.

Garrett Elementary Angie Kutzer, Media Specialist The senior high choric team from Alamance Christian School visited Garrett Elementary to perform their award‐winning rendition of "Henry & the Clubhouse" by Beverly Cleary. This special treat culminated an author study unit on Cleary that the third through fifth graders completed in the media center with Mrs. Kutzer throughout the month of April. The Gators really enjoyed getting to ask the senior students in the group about what colleges they were going to, why they picked that school and what would major in.
Williams High Kristen Gravely, PTLA Administrative Intern
As a culmination of April’s Poetry Month, Williams held an awesome Poetry Slam on Fri., May 3, under the direction of their English teacher, Jason Bratton, (first year of teaching at Williams)! Students impressed a large student and teacher audience with their inspiring poems, making judging and selecting a winner extremely difficult. Mr. Bratton even performed an original poem of his own, much to the pleasure of the audience!

Southern Middle Andrea Rumley Alamance‐Burlington Middle School baseball teams are participating in a baseball tournament this week to raise money for ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease," is a progressive motor neuron disease. It attacks brain nerve cells, so that eventually the patient can no longer move his or her muscles. Eventually, the patient becomes paralyzed, but keeps all intellectual awareness. They effectively become a prisoner in their own body. The ALS Middle School Baseball Classic is organized by the ALS Kids Staff at Southern Middle School and Southern Middle’s athletic director, Mark Isley! The 12 – 14 year olds all know someone affected by this devastating disease. Now, the players and the kids’ staff take it upon themselves to do something to help patients and their families.

Last week B. Everett Jordan Elementary held its first ever Fine Arts Night! We had over 250 students, parents, and relatives come to the school for an art exhibition, musical performance, and a pizza dinner. Art Teacher Matt Smith hung over 1000 pieces of student art on the walls for the exhibition! Each student from K‐5 participated by creating artworks throughout the school year for the event. It was a huge success! The BEJ Fine Arts Night also included a special performance given by Miss Meredith Long and the Singing Cubs. The Singing Cubs serenaded the B. Everett Jordan community of parents, students, and staff while they enjoyed a pizza dinner in the cafeteria. This year’s ensemble is made up of 40 talented 4th and 5th grade singers who have dedicated their recess time once a week to be a part of the group. They are looking forward to their next performance at the B. Everett Jordan awards assembly in June. Way to go BEJ!
