Smith Sweethearts The Seabees at Smith held a fundraiser for their fifth grade Sound to Sea trip this spring. It was in the form of a dance after school. The third, fourth and fifth graders were invited to the gym on the Friday before Valentine’s Day. The kids jammed out to the sounds spun by DJ Chubber May. There were lots of dance offs between the boys and the girls during the event. The students purchased glow sticks, bracelets and necklaces to light up in the darkness of the gym. There were snacks sold and parents even manned a photo booth where the students got to pose for some great pictures.

Our students had a great time and some teachers even got into the fun! Smith School rocks!

Shout Out from Western High NJROTC Rod Butler, Master Chief, USN (Ret.)

North Carolina NJROTC Brain Brawl Championship On Saturday, 20 February 2016 the Western Alamance High School NJROTC Academic Team competed in the NJROTC North Carolina Academic Brain Brawl Championship held at West Lincoln High School. Led by Team Captain Cadet Yuuki Butler, team members Cadet Blake Cole, and Cadet Jonathan Solorzano won third place overall and were awarded a trophy out of 22 teams competing!

The competition is set up similar to Jeopardy. The cadets are given categories to choose from and then they receive a random question relating to the category. The first team to buzz in answers the question. If the team does not answer correctly, the team will lose points and another team is allowed to buzz in and answer the question. The cadets started out strong in the opening round and stayed this way throughout the second round, the semi-finals and into the championship round.

The WAHS NJROTC proved their mental strength, skills, and determination at the NJROTC North Carolina Brain Brawl Championship. The cadets are very proud to have won third place in this highly competitive event and are hoping to do even better next year. Congratulations to a job Well Done!

Shout Out from Smith Elementary Lindy Isley, Teacher/Librarian

The Seabees of Smith are continuing their quest to go global this year! The teachers were challenged to complete 4 modules towards that end. The third module involves having a Skype session with someone. The specialty teachers and a few members of the support staff decided to compare the specialty classes of Smith School with the specialty classes in Sweden!

ESL teacher Sheila Hedgecock has a friend, Ola Gustafsson, who is a 4th grade teacher in a small elementary school in Sweden. The teachers at Smith prepared questions for the Swedish children and the Seabee students were able to ask the questions during the Skype session.

ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON SCHOOLS AROUND OUR SCHOOLS SHOUT OUTS Feb 26, 2016

Also during the session, Coach David Vaughn led the fourth graders from Mrs. Macomson’s class in a cardiac version of the Whip/Nae Nae so the Swedish children could observe a PE class in action!

We found some similarities and differences between the Seabees and the Swedish students.

Mrs. Macomson’s students went back to their classroom and recorded those findings on a Venn diagram.

The students from both countries are interested in another Skype session in the future or perhaps a chance to become pen pals.

This global thing just might catch on!

Shout Out from Woodlawn Middle Rachel Polmanteer, Assistant Coach

Over the holidays the Woodlawn girl's’ basketball team and student support staff sponsored an Army unit out of Fort Bragg that was serving in Afghanistan. The girls were able to rally the whole Woodlawn community and send over ten boxes full of items for this brave group of men and women. Fortunately they have returned safely and yesterday the captain of the unit, Jason Porter, was able to come thank the girls in person. The girls were very excited to meet him and asked all sorts of questions. I am so proud of our girls for all of their hard work! Pictured is our team with Mr. Porter.
