    FOR HIRE

    Cost of hiring

Assumptions: Daily total distance covered: 33.3 km Daily trips: 2 Time taken in

each trip: 45 minutes Tolls, tax and surge pricing not included.

    Uber Go

Charges for rides Base fare: Rs 40, Per minute: Rs 1, Per km: Rs 7

Cost of hiring Uber Go: Rs 80 + Rs 90 + Rs 230 = Rs 400 per day

Total cost: Rs 4.32 lakh (3 years)

You save: Rs 1.86 lakh, without chauffeur in 3 years (Rs 6.18 lakh - Rs 4.32

lakh) Rs 6.18 lakh, with chauffeur in 3 years (Rs 10.5 lakh - Rs 4.32 lakh)

    Ola Mini

Charges for rides Base fare: Rs 100, Per minute: Rs 1, Per km: Rs 8

Cost of hiring ola mini: Rs 200 + Rs 80 + Rs 202 = Rs 482 per day

Total cost: Rs 5.2 lakh (3 years)

You save: Rs 98000, without chauffeur in 3 years (Rs 6.18 lakh - Rs 5.2 lakh)

Rs 5.3 lakh, with chauffeur in 3 years (Rs 10.5 lakh - Rs 5.2 lakh)

    ET Wealth analysis

It is clear from the above calculation that hiring an Uber or Ola will be lighter on

your pocket, though the savings are lesser for self-driven cars. So, weigh the

benefits and drawbacks of owning a car (see What money can't buy...) before

    taking a decision.

    What money can't buy...

    If you own a car

Sense of ownership: Nothing quite compares to the feeling of buying andcaring for your own car.

Convenience: There's no hassle of booking and waiting for the cab. A taxi

can't match the instant access to your own car.

Holidays & emergencies: Random, weekend road tours or a rush trip to the

doctor are definitely easier with your own car.

Safety: With cases of misconduct by drivers, it's safer, especially for women, to

    drive on their own.

tagline keeps changing according to what their

business is. The pillars on which the trade stands is also pretty much the same.

They may be selling a bunch of products or a single type of investment but the

services offered are usually free, easy to use, help you take quick decisions

and close the deal on the go from anywhere, typically using their newly

launched app. However, decisions, especially concerning money , should not

be taken in a hurry . There is an array of products and it may be easy to shop

but you need to make sure you don't get stuck with something that you don't

need or is wrong for you.

Remember, unlike an Amazon or a Flipkart purchase, neither can these

financial products be returned nor will you get a refund if you lose money . Don't

let the swanky e-interface impress you so much that you forget to ask the basic

    questions.

    WHO IS SELLING?

This question is as important online as offline, if not more. Offline, a mutual fund

broker will tell you upfront that he is a broker. Online, he may have a nice app

which is promoted as a `tool' to help you buy units easily. Therefore, it is

mandatory to know how they are earning their money and what their businessmodel is, especially when you hear the word free.

They may call themselves an online aggregator or an app that manages your

money or help you buy the best product, remember they can not be selling you

products unless they are licensed. For instance, online insurance aggregators

who tell you that they help you compare products and therefore save money

are actually insurance brokers with a cool website.

Agreed they may offer more products than an average offline agent, but the

underlying principle is the same -they earn commissions by selling you a

product. The products listed on the top are usually that gets them higher

commissions. Also, like in a brick-and-mortar shop, often the e-shops too have

    top-shelf deals with companies.

IS IT REALLY A GOOD DEAL?

Unlike retail ecommerce sites selling electronics and apparels, there is no

`discount war' among the financial eComm sites.

However, many of them try to distin guish themselves by claiming to provide

quality advice to inves tors, which you should be wary of. There may not be a

product bias based on earnings. They may have a fee-based recommendation

model, however, the recommendations made might be ex tremely skewed, or worse, flawed. If the financial website has a tie-up with only four companies

selling a particular type of product, how good can their recommendations be? It

is therefore important to know on what basis are the suggestions are being

made, analyse the quality of their data and methods being used.

Moreover, will they be responsible for a wrong recommendation? If they claim

to help you manage your portfolio, check if the site provides exit

    recommendations and portfolio rebalancing services.

Applying for a job o n socialmedia? Mistakes youshould avoid

Since there are many options, the chances of getting confused is higher. The

store will be selling a particular product for different sizes. Unless you know

yours, even if you get a fantastic product at a great price, it would be a bad-buy

. Also, there will hardly be any human intervention in the process. Therefore,

the need for a thorough research and greater surety is higher when making a

    purchase online.

DO THEY NEED SO MANY DETAILS?

Think before you share your data. Does a site selling insurance need your home loan details? Maybe they will spam you with home loan insurance policy

mails later. A site should not be asking for too many details unless you show

interest in buying. That too, only details that are relevant to the purchase. Do

not share details unless you are sure about the data security systems.

to bother about it right now? ET Wealth

explains the technology and what it means for

    the common user.

    What is 4K?

In basic terms, 4k denotes the new display

resolution used for consumer electronics. In

    technical terms, 4K or 4096 x 2160 (or 3840 x

2160 for TVs) pixels is four times the resolutionand four times the number of pixels as compared to full HD (1920 x 1080

pixels). These refer to the number of pixels laid out horizontally vs vertically—

1920 pixels across from left to right and 1080 pixels from top to bottom.

Multiplying these numbers will give you the total number of pixels on the panel

that are being used to generate an image. When you look at 4k in the same

number format, simple multiplication will show you that 4096 x 2160 is over four

times the number of pixels as compared to 1920 x 1080. Also, while full HD

roughly translates into 2.1 megapixels, 4K translates into to 8.3 megapixels

    roughly, meaning sharper images.

    Do I need it?

This is debatable. If you have the cash to spare, why not? 4K TVs have gotten

cheaper over the years and the new generation of game consoles, USB media

players, Blu-Ray players and even set-top boxes with 4K support are available

now. 4K is the next logical step up from full HD and we will all eventually shift to

4K—just as standard definition sets are now a rarity compared to HD, HD will

become rare compared to 4K in the next 3 to 5 years. So if you are planning to

purchase a new TV right now, it will be better if you spent a bit more and chose

a 4k TV over a full HD one.

    Is content available?

Right now, real 4K content is hard to come by. However, 4K content set-top

boxes are available that broadcast directl limited channel su ort currentl to

Excess weight can increaseodds of asthma in women

Beware: Belly fat ups heartfailure risk

After Galaxy J3, Samsungto unveil 5-inch foldable

your home. Gaming consoles (Xbox One, Play-Station 4) already have 4k

support and 4K Blu-Ray players as well as discs are available. Plus, consumer

smartphones for as low as `10,000 now support 4k video recording which you

can then transfer and enjoy in full resolution on a 4k TV. This is in addition to

DSLR and point and shoot cameras that also do 4k video recording now. In

short, 4K will be everywhere— it's only a matter of time.

    Why upgrade?

When full HD first arrived and you saw actual, full HD content on a full HD

television, the difference was instantly recognizable compared to SD content.

The level of detail was what catches the attention. However, on a large TV, 46-

inches or larger, it's really easy to see individual pixels with the naked eye if you

stand close to the screen. As TV screen became larger, it's only natural that the

total number of pixels used to generate an image grew in number too. Moving

the panel to the next higher resolution of 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) ensures a

higher pixel density and sharpens everything up. With real 4K content, it is the

same kind of feeling that came as moving from standard to high definition.

Can I upscale full HD content to 4K?

4K television available today automatically upscale all the content you play on

it. So any full HD or even 720p HD content will look better compared tostandard definition content when upscaled. If for some reason your TV does not

have the upscale capabilities, you can choose to get an A/V receiver that

supports 4k upscaling. There are options available from brands like Onkyo,

Yamaha and Denon with built in 4K upscaling via dedicated hardware and

image processing algorithms. While it will not match the sharpness of actual 4k

footage, upscaled full HD content played via these receivers, will look better on

    a 4K TV.

6 smart things to know about loss of

    credit cards28 Mar, 2016, 08.00AM IST

    1. Issuing banks have insurance plans to cover

credit card losses so that the customer does nothave any liability.

    2. If a card is lost, the customer has to report

the loss to the bank by calling the call centre or

    service centre.

    3. The customer must then file an FIR at a

police station as a record of the loss being

    reported.

    4. A follow-up application is made to the bank

with a copy of the FIR, seeking cancellation of the card.

    5. Any transaction made on the card after the customer has notified the bank,

will not be charged to the customer.

    6. Typically, ATM and online transactions that require a PIN for completion are

not covered under the scheme of zero liability to the cardholder

cards. This again has a negative impact on the credit score.

    Security risk

If the safety of the card is compromised, the damages can be high. To mitigate

the risk of fraud, users should set up alerts whereby the bank informs them

when a transaction that does not match their usual spending pattern is noticed.

    High interest outgo

As the increased credit limit can also mean greater spending, the chances of

the card holder being unable to repay the amount in full in a month also

increases. This translates to high interest outgo.

Another way of increasing one's credit limit is by opting for multiple credit cards.

However, there are pitfalls here too. Says Adhil Shetty of Bankbazar.com: "You

will spend more and there is a high chance of default if you cannot manage

payments and credit period well. This will negatively impact your credit score."

Shetty says a single credit card with a higher limit is a better solution. You will

also save on annual fees of multiple cards.

paymen ts throug h the host ca rd

    emulation technology.

    emulation technology (HCE), which neither

requires swiping nor reading an embedded

    chip.

"The future of cards is digital and free of plastic, and through this new

technology, cards can sit in one's mobile and payments will be made directly

through the phone," said Vijay Jasuja, CEO, SBI Cards.

Worldline e-Payment Services, a French payments company which works with

almost all major banks in India, in both merchant acquisition as well as

payments business, is in the process of introducing this technology here which

is already live in some of the banks in Europe.

It will install HCE, which would allow POS devices to interact with virtual credit

    or debit cards.

"This technology can be introduced through the existing POS infrastructure in

India. POS machines need to be updated so that they can accept all kinds of

digital payments through mobile phones, and we are in the process of rolling

out such POS terminals," said Deepak Chandnani, CEO, South Asia, Worldline.

Jasuja explained that the mass roll out of this technology would require some

time as the rollout of contactless card terminals has started only recently. The

increasing popularity of always online smart devices and the application of near

field communication (NFC) technology have, to a great extent, helped the

    realisation of HCE.

The Reserve Bank of India in a concept note recently noted that the number of

POS terminals in the country was stagnant at 12,36,933, while the number of

credit cards in circulation was 22.88 million.

Chandnani believes that with mass roll out of debit cards through the Jan Dhan

scheme and direct benefit transfer, there would be a huge demand for

terminalisation across merchant outlets and innovative solutions like these will

give a push to digital payments.

"There would be no restrictions on the amount that can be spent through cards

and that is one of the points which would give a huge benefit to cards for

expansion of their business and more merchant acquisition," said Jasuja.

MUMBAI: You have half a month more to buy

your dream car  at pre-budget prices, as mostauto makers have decided to stay away from

    passing on the newly-imposed infrastructure

and luxury cess on existing stocks. This means

a benefit of Rs 2,000 on a small hatchback to a

few lakh rupees on luxury cars for buyers until

the stock lasts or the end of March, whichever

    is earlier.

For auto makers, this offers an opportunity to

    clear inventory of 2-2.5 lakh

    vehicles lying in their stockyards

and with dealers before the new

    fiscal year begins. Manufacturers

expect the offers to help drive up

    March retail sales in double

digits, but they are unsure about

the following months. These cars and utility vehicles were produced before the

government announced the 1-4% infra cess on vehicles in the Budget unveiled

on February 29, industry executives said. Vehicles costing more than Rs 10

lakh face an extra 1% luxury tax.

Most of the auto makers announced price hikes immediately after the budget

announcement. However, some like Mahindra & Mahindra decided to absorbthe infra cess in entire March.

The likes of Maruti Suzuki, Honda and Toyota have informed their dealers to

extend the pre-budget stock to customers at pre-budget price, which will lead to

The way a credit card works is different

from the way a debit card. Here's few

major differences in their usage and

    working.

How credit cards are different from

    debit cards22 Feb, 2016, 08.55AM IST

    1. Credit card is a loan from the bank to you. It

is a borrowing that will become due after the

billing period. On the other hand, debit cards let

    you access your own funds.

    2. When you make an online payment with your

debit card, the transaction is protected by

multiple layers of security, including verification

with a one-time password. Secure your credit

card similarly with your bank, before using it

    online.

    3. When you use your credit card online, you

have time to dispute a wrong charge, block a

card for misuse, or take the issue up with the bank. If you use a debit card,

money moves immediately out of your account and you are in a position of

    recovery of your funds.

    4. Debit card usage may be limited by a daily amount allowed on your card, and

not the amount available in your account. You can modify this amount to the

maximum permissible one. A credit card limit is set for a payment cycle, and

    can be used freely.
