Instructions for Google Classroom Digital Components

All student activities are available in digital format compatible with Google Classroom. They are available in two formats: Google Slides and Google Forms.

Google SlidesFirst, I have made all student pages (excluding assessments) in Google Slides format. Students can simply add text boxes to any area they wish to type on. To access the Google Slides for this story, copy and paste the link below into your browser:link only available in full resource

Teaching Guide, Rationale, Lesson Plans, and ProceduresI have also discussed here how I use each activity and included hints and links to help you, too. I went ahead and mapped out the days for you. Feel free to take or leave what you like. Even if you don’t plan to follow this schedule, I still recommend reading through this section to get the most out of these activities.

These lessons and activities were designed to meet the needs of seventh graders during the second half of the school year when students have already been introduced to most major concepts like plot, conflict, character traits and characterization, theme, mood, tone, etc.

Day 11. Activity 1: 10 minutesJournal Activity – Discuss if desiredFind PPT file in download folder. 2. Activity 2: 20 minutesRead “After Twenty Years”(Full text included.)3. Activity 3: 30 minutesForeshadowing Analysis – afterany fun surprise ending, I love to go back and see what clues I missed. I teach my students thisas well, and this activity guidesstudents to do just that, recordingtheir justification in the bubble.

Day 21. Activity 4: 25 minutesComprehension Quiz– Basic Comprehension (Recall Facts) This quiz checks for basic comprehension and recall of the story. There are no higher order thinking questions on this quiz, no inferring, no analyzing, no drawing conclusions, etc. so I do not recommend that students use a copy of the story for this quiz unless they need that as a testing accommodation. Key included (not shown)2. Activity 5: 30 minutesPlot Diagram Graphic Organizer – Finally, here’s a no-frills run-of-the-mill plot diagram for your students to complete. It’s been a while since we had a straight-forward one.

Teacher’s Guide

Day 31. Activity 6: 30 minutesVocabulary Guide – Context CluesHere, students have to use only clues from the sentence to choose a synonym for the way a word is used in the sentence; some wrong answer choices are close but not precise so it’s definitely more of an advanced context clues practice. There are also some harder challenge questions at the end.2. Activity 7: 30 minutesPoint of View Analysis – These questions are specifically created for hitting RL.7.6 HARD. Take a look at them and you might even consider skipping this activity until after the characterization activities have been finished (activities 8-11) if your students may struggle with these questions.

Day 41. Activity 8: 30 minutesAnnotation Guide: CharacterizationStudents start this heavy 2-day character analysis by underlining or highlighting anything that reveals information about the two main characters in this story. Notice that Jimmy is blue and Bob is orange in my annotations. See how much your students can find on their own or let them work with partners if necessary to complete this part, then review before moving onto the next activity.2. Activity 9: 30 minutesOrganize Characterization Examples – Here students must really dig deep and figure out where the annotated information from Activity 8 fits in here. Students decide which information falls under traditional indirect characterization like words, feelings, actions, choices, etc., plus what is revealed by the narrator and what is revealed by the reactions from other characters. This is another prepper activity for the next two.

Day 51. Activity 10: 30 minutesIndirect Characterization Analysis of Jimmy/Patrolman Wells – Hopefully your students have experienced this activity before with a previous story unit, so I really really really want to encourage you to let students do the whole thing alone (without giving them the second step) which is why I didn’t make a scaffolded version. The hard work is done and they have the chart they made in the last activity to fall back on, so let them grapple. They need to grapple. It’s hard. Struggle is good.2. Activity 11: 30 minutesIndirect Characterization Analysis of ‘Silky’ BobSoo just in case you helped too much with Activity 11, I’m giving you 12 now. It’s your opportunity to really step away and let your students show you what they can do!

Day 611. Activity 12: 35 minutesMovie Comparison activity. Oh my, let me tell you that there are several awful movie versions of this story available and I watched them all to find the best one. Yes, this was the best. It’s lame, but it makes for a good opportunity for your students to compare. Students are asked to dig deep on this one, as they’ll be writing an essay in the next activity. Watch movie, complete analysis, then watch movie again so that they can fill in details wherever else is needed and be completely ready to write that detailed paper.Youtube: https://youtu.be/9A3DBlpPMioBackup: https://goo.gl/aT5G9B

Day 71. Activity 13: 60-90 minutesMovie Comparison Essay Prompt, Organizer, and Rubric. Everything you need is included in these pages of information, including an optional essay-paragraph formula and detailed rubric. You can also edit the rubric and guide in the Editable folder.

Day 81. Activity 14: 40-50 minutesComprehension Skills Test. Meant to be given along with a copy of the selection, though I wouldn’t allow students to use annotated selection unless it was a test modification. Keys included as always (not shown).

Final Assessment PRACTICE Read “The Ransom of Red Chief” by O. Henry (full text included) and answer final practice questions. On the answer key, I’ve included the specific common core skills tested by each question.I also broke the story and test down into Part 1 and Part 2, just in case you want to stop and discuss or want to break up the student work load into two days. The first part is about 2/3 of the story and second part includes the remaining. Once students answer the questions, I recommend going over them and discussing the why behind the answers to make sure that when students see these same question types again on the final or a standardized test they can answer them correctly. Answer key included as always but not shown here.Scenes: https://goo.gl/838Vzr

we might have to come. We figured that in twenty years each of us ought to have our destiny worked out and our fortunes made, whatever they were going to be."

"It sounds pretty interesting," said the policeman. "Rather a long time between meets, though, it seems to me. Haven't you heard from your friend since you left?”

"Well, yes, for a time we corresponded," said the other. "But after a year or two we lost track of each other. You see, the West is a pretty big proposition, and I kept hustling around over it pretty lively. But I know Jimmy will meet me here if he's alive, for he always was the truest, staunchest old chap in the world. He'll never forget. I came a thousand miles to stand in this door to-night, and it's worth it if my old partner turns up."

The waiting man pulled out a handsome watch, the lids of it set with small diamonds. "Three minutes to ten," he announced. "It was exactly ten o'clock when we parted here at

the restaurant door." "Did pretty well out West, didn't you?" asked the policeman. "You bet! I hope Jimmy has done half as well. He was a kind of plodder, though, good

fellow as he was. I've had to compete with some of the sharpest wits going to get my pile. A man gets in a groove in New York. It takes the West to put a razor-edge on him."

The policeman twirled his club and took a step or two. "I'll be on my way. Hope your friend comes around all right. Going to call time on him

sharp?" "I should say not!" said the other. "I'll give him half an hour at least. If Jimmy is alive on

earth he'll be here by that time. So long, officer." "Good-night, sir," said the policeman, passing on along his beat, trying doors as he went. There was now a fine, cold drizzle falling, and the wind had risen from its uncertain puffs

into a steady blow. The few foot passengers astir in that quarter hurried dismally and silently along with coat collars turned high and pocketed hands. And in the door of the hardware store the man who had come a thousand miles to fill an appointment, uncertain almost to absurdity, with the friend of his youth, smoked his cigar and waited.

About twenty minutes he waited, and then a tall man in a long overcoat, with collar turned up to his ears, hurried across from the opposite side of the street. He went directly to the waiting man.

"Is that you, Bob?" he asked, doubtfully."Is that you, Jimmy Wells?" cried the man in the door. "Bless my heart!" exclaimed the new

arrival, grasping both the other's hands with his own. "It's Bob, sure as fate. I was certain I'd find you here if you were still in existence. Well, well, well!--twenty years is a long time. The

old restaurant’s gone, Bob; I wish it had lasted, so we could have had another dinner there. How has the West treated you, old man?"

"Bully; it has given me everything I asked it for. You've changed lots, Jimmy. I never thought you were so tall by two or three inches."

"Oh, I grew a bit after I was twenty." "Doing well in New York, Jimmy?" "Moderately. I have a position in one of the city departments. Come on, Bob; we'll go

around to a place I know of, and have a good long talk about old times." The two men started up the street, arm in arm. The man from the West, his egotism

enlarged by success, was beginning to outline the history of his career. The other, submerged in his overcoat, listened with interest.

At the corner stood a drug store, brilliant with electric lights. When they came into this glare each of them turned simultaneously to gaze upon the other's face.

The man from the West stopped suddenly and released his arm. "You're not Jimmy Wells," he snapped. "Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough

to change a man's nose from a Roman to a pug." "It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one," said the tall man. "You've been under

arrest for ten minutes, 'Silky' Bob. Chicago thinks you may have dropped over our way and wires us she wants to have a chat with you. Going quietly, are you? That's sensible. Now, before we go on to the station here's a note I was asked to hand you. You may read it here at the window. It's from Patrolman Wells."

The man from the West unfolded the little piece of paper handed him. His hand was steady when he began to read, but it trembled a little by the time he had finished. The note was rather short.

"Bob: I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to light your cigar I saw it was the face of the man wanted in Chicago. Somehow I couldn't do it myself, so I went around and got a plain clothes man to do the job. JIMMY."

Activity 10

Indirect Characterization Analysisof Jimmy/Patrolman Wells in ”After Twenty Years”

Actions

Choices

Words

Find three examples of indirect characterization of the man in the story. Write an example of his words in the speech bubble, choices in the hand, and actions in the shoe. Then, answer each question in the box next to the shape.

What do these words tell youabout his character?

What does this choice tell youabout his character?

What do these actions tell you about his character?

“I’ll be on my way. I hope your friend comes around all right. Going to call time on him sharp?“

the policeman moved impressively, trying doors, twirling his club with many intricate and artful movements

These words show

us that Jimmy is

careful and

thoughtful in what

he does – he thinks

before he acts. He is

considering the best

way to bring down

‘Silky’ Bob without

raising suspicion and

does a good job of

that here.

The narrator tells us that Jimmy

made a “fine picture of a guardian of

the peace,” but these detailed actions

also show us that Jimmy is a

confident and competent police

officer as well.

Instead of arresting his old friend, Jimmy decides to get a plain clothes officer

to do the job.

Jimmy is still a true

and loyal friend even

though now he’s a

faithful ”guardian of

the peace.” He wants

to do what’s right

but can’t bring

himself to arrest

‘Silky’ Bob himself, so

he has another

officer do it.
