INTRODUCTION 1

WELCOME!WELCOME!

This booklet was prepared as a self-guided tour of shorelines - streams, lakes, and marine water - that will be addressed in the SMP update. These water bodies include:

• Budd Inlet

• Ken Lake

• Grass Lake

• Ward Lake

• Chambers Lake

• Percival Creek

• Black Lake Drainage Ditch

This booklet provides locations for viewing shorelines subject to the SMP update. The numbers on the map at the front of this booklet correspond with viewing locations. The back side of each page is lined for note-taking.

INTRODUCTION 1

The City of Olympia has been in the process of updating its Shoreline Master Program (SMP) since 2009. The Planning Commission completed their work in the spring of 2012, and transmitted their recommendations to the City Council on June 19, 2012. Over the course of the next few months, the City Council will consider the June 2012 Draft; seek input from the community, businesses, and government entities; and direct staff to develop a final proposed SMP.

Existing Shoreline Conditions and Land Uses:• Highly altered shoreline as a result of upland fill and construction of the

marina and restaurant• Existing uses include a marina, restaurant, repair shop, viewing platform,

and Dunlap Towing• A portion of Tugboat Annie’s extends over the water

Points of Interest:• Some of Dunlap Towing operations can

be seen from the viewing platform on the north side of the restaurant

• Views of Priest Point Park, East Bay, Port Peninsula, and Downtown

OPC Proposed Shoreline Designation:• Urban Conservancy*

SMP Issues:• Height/setbacks: nonconforming structures,

potential limitations on future development

* The purpose of Urban Conservancy is to protect and restore ecological functions of sensitive lands within an urban environment, while still allowing a variety of compatible uses. The primary allowed uses are those that preserve the natural character of the area.
