In an increasinglychallenging landscape for
public schools in the ShoreConference, the Manasquanboys basketball team hasremained a consistent force, both in the public ranks andoverall within the conference. This past year, head coach Andrew Bilodeau guided
the Warriors to the top public school ranking in theShore Conference – No. 3 overall at the Shore – andfor his efforts, he was named by the Shore ConferenceCoaches the 2015-16 Coach of the Year.
The Warriors returned the experienced senior duoof 6-foot-4-inch forward Ryan Jensen and point guardJack Sheehan – both of whom are three-year starters, with Jensen playing significant minutes as a freshman
as well. With younger brothers Devin Jensen andTommy Sheehan – both juniors – returning to therotation as well, the Warriors entered the 2015-16season with high expectations.
With high goals coming into the year, Manasquanwent 24-4, winning the Shore Conference Class ACentral title by outlasting defending ShoreConference Tournament champion Rumson-FairHaven. The Warriors also reached the ShoreConference Tournament semifinals and thechampionship game of the NJSIAA Central JerseyGroup II sectional playoffs.
The team’s two defining wins of the season bothcame against aforementioned Rumson – once in theShore Conference Tournament and again in theCentral Jersey Group II semifinals. The Warriorspulled out an 80-77, triple-overtime thriller in theShore Conference Tournament quarterfinals andfollowed that up with a resounding 65-46 victory overthe Bulldogs in the state tournament.
Manasquan would fall to Christian Brothers
Academy in the SCT semifinals and later toBordentown in the Central Jersey IIchampionship game after battling back from adouble-digit deficit to pull within three pointswith a chance to tie the game in the finalminute.
Bilodeau completed hiseighth season with theWarriors, during whichtime he has led the programto two Central JerseyGroup II championships, six division titles and fourShore ConferenceTournament final fours.
Prior to taking over atManasquan, Bilodeaumade successful headcoaching stops atManchester and TomsRiver North.
It took Manasquan coachLisa Kukoda all of three
seasons to turn Manasquanfrom a rebuilding project toa two-time Shore Conferencechampion and NJSIAATournament of Championswinner and she did it as a
first-time head coachwho still has notcelebrated her 30thbirthday.So how did the Warriors head
coach top last year’s job on thesideline and become this year’s ShoreConference Coaches’ Coach of theYear? By skipping the rebuildingportion of this year’s rebuildingproject.
With no seniors in this year’s
starting lineup and McDonald’s All-American MarinaMabrey off to begin her college career at Notre Dame,Manasquan barely missed a beat, reaching the finals ofboth the Shore Conference Tournament and Tournamentof Champions for the third straight year. Only a senior-laden St. John Vianney team that went 31-1 and did notlose to a single opponent from the state of N.J. this yearstopped Manasquan from winning both titles.
Despite coming up shy of a third straight ShoreConference title and second straight Tournament ofChampions title, the Warriors turned in an effort that islikely to land them the No. 2 spot in the statewiderankings to end the year and also land them thepreseason No. 1 ranking next year. They finished theyear 28-7, with four of those losses coming against St.John Vianney.
Manasquan entered the Shore ConferenceTournament as the No. 3 seed and took down No. 2Rumson-Fair Haven in overtime to earn a spot in thechampionship game for the third consecutive season. The Warriors again saw Rumson in the NJSIAA CentralJersey Group II final and scored a resounding 56-30over a perennial contender in the section.
The second tournament win over Rumson clinched athird straight Central Jersey Group II title and precludeda third straight Group II title under Kukoda. TheWarriors survived a 47-42 battle against Sterling in the
Group II semifinal before routing High Point in theGroup II championship game.
Manasquan then showed its meddle in two T of Cwins, closing a 57-49 win over University with a 15-0run to escape the first round and then knocking offsecond-seeded Rutgers Prep, 59-50, in the semifinals.
Although the Warriors fell short of a third straightSCT title and second straight T of C title, they return allfive starters – juniors Stella Clark and Addie Masonius, sophomores Dara Mabrey and Carly Geissler, andfreshman Faith Masonius – as well as sophomore NikkiStevens, who was the first player off the bench.
The Warriors also had the season they did despite theloss of senior Gillian Black and junior Victoria Galvan– both of whom missed the entire season because of atorn ACL. Galvan was a starter on the 2015 T of C titleteam and is also slated to return to Manasquan’s loadedlineup next year.
Prior to becoming the coach of the Warriors, Kukodawent by Lisa Kuchinski and was an assistant at RedBank Catholic under Joe Montano. Kukoda starred forthe Caseys before graduating in 2004 and moving on toplay at Manhattan College.

The road to an NJSIAATournament of Championstitle has been a long one for
the St. John Vianney girlsbasketball seniors, littered with anumber of tough losses along theway. If the journey to the top spotin N.J. lasted two overtimeslonger than it was supposed to,the Lancers seniors were willingto go the extra distance. That long journey ended Monday at the Sun National Bank Center
in Trenton the way it always does for the greatest of girls teams at St.John Vianney High School: with a Tournament of Champions title.
The Lady Lancers recovered from a fourth-quarter Manasquan rallyand multiple overtime deficits to beat the defending championWarriors for the fourth time this year, 65-58 in double overtime, tocapture a record seventh Tournament of Champions crown and firstsince 2009.
Monday’s double-overtime triumph caps a 31-1 season for St. JohnVianney that ended a relatively lengthy drought without anypostseason titles. The Lancers won the Shore Conference Tournamenttitle for the first time in 10 years by beatingManasquan on Feb. 27 and the seven yearsbetween T of C titles is the second-longestdrought for Vianney – which ended a 10-yeardrought when it won the 2009 title.
“These players have beenhere for three and four yearsand have been buildingtowards this,” St. JohnVianney coach Dawn Karpellsaid. “If you go back to earlieryears, when they wereyounger, we were terrible inovertime. Before the game, our message was ‘We are soprepared for any situation thatis going to arise.’“Obviously, we didn’t want the situation to
unfold that way, but mentally, we’ve been testedand there was no way we going to give it up thateasily. That’s what shined through.”
Kelly Campbell led the senior effort Mondaywith 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assists to capher standout four-year varsity career. The 6-footpoint guard and DePaul University recruit buried14 of her 18 free-throw attempts for the gameand shot 13-for-16 in the fourth quarter and twoovertime periods – including converting her finaleight attempts to put the game on ice.
Fellow seniors Vanessa Pinho, Zoe Pero, GigiCaponegro and Tina Lebron all added significant
contributions along the way for St. JohnVianney to secure the championship. Pinhoscored 10 points to go with her defenseagainst Manasquan junior guard Stella Clark, which included a key steal and layup to givethe Warriors a 39-32 lead with 4:14 left toplay.
Lebron, meanwhile, hit two first-half threesand capped the scoring with a free throw inthe second overtime. Pero added eight pointsoff the bench before fouling out – six of whichcame in the first half.
Caponegro scored only two points but theycame on the biggest field goal of the game. The senior forward drilled an 18-footer sevenseconds into overtime, which gave theLancers the lead for good.
“The fact that Gigi stepped up and hit thathuge jump shot gave us a lift because we gotthat scoring from somebody else on the floor,”Karpell said. “We didn’t give up the lead afterthat, so I think that she had the confidence tohit that shot was really important for themomentum.”
The Lancers appeared poised to putManasquan away just as they did on Feb. 27when they won 59-48 at Monmouth, but the
Warriors –which did notplay a senior onMonday night –came stormingback afterPinho’s steal and layup extended the leadto seven midway through the fourth.
Freshman Faith Masonius led theManasquan comeback by scoring 13 ofher game-high 27 points in the final 3:50of the fourth quarter. Nine of thosepoints came on conventional three-pointplays – including one that pulledManasquan even at 43 with 1:33 left.
“She’s just a tough matchupathletically,” Karpell said of Masonius.“We put Kimi (Evans) on her early andshe stepped out and hit a jumper. Weswitched Gigi on her and she used hersize advantage. I think they did a goodjob of isolating her and our help wasn’tgetting to her in time. She also finishedevery opportunity, so she did her parttoo.”
Pinho came back with two free throwswith 1:13 remaining to give Vianney atwo-point lead. Manasquan then turnedthe ball over on a five-second call out ofa timeout and sophomore Julia Ramosknocked down the second of two freethrows with 57 seconds left to make it46-43.
Manasquan sophomore Dara Mabreydrove the lane for a layup that pulled theWarriors within a point and Campbell
answered with twofoul shots to stretchthe lead back to 48-45with 44 seconds left.
After working theclock down 20seconds, sophomoreCarly Geissler foundMasonius for a lay-inthat cut Vianney’s leadback to one with 16seconds left. TheWarriors caught abreak on the other endwhen Campbellmissed the first of twofree throws beforeconverting the secondand giving the Lancersa 49-47 lead.
With her team’sseason on the line,Masonius againdelivered, securing theball after Caponegroblocked a shot byMabrey and putting itup for the tying scorewith 4.6 seconds left.
Campbell dribbledthe ball from three-quarters court and putup a runner in the lanebefore the final buzzer
sounded, but the shot hit the back rim and bounded away to send thegame into overtime.
“We were a little shocked, but we know Manasquan’s a team thatgoes on big runs and inches their way back in so we weren’t toosurprised, even though we didn’t want it to happen,” Campbell said.“We figured they would make a run.”
“I kept joking with my seniors that they just wanted to stay withme that much longer,” Karpell joked. “They just didn’t want to leave

so that was, in fact, why it went to two overtimes.”
Masonius and Lancers junior Kimi Evans (11 points and sixrebounds) traded baskets to open the overtime session and juniorAddie Masonius found her younger sister for another lay-in that gaveManasquan a 53-51 lead. Evans hit one of two free throws on the otherend and after a defensive stand, Campbell hit one of two to even thescore at 53 with 1:27 left. The two teams played to a stalemate for theremainder of the period, with Campbell dribbling out most of the final45 seconds before forcing up a shot to end the first overtime.
Caponegro’s jumper from the left wing represented the first two offive straight Lancers points to start the second overtime. The Warriorsfaced an uphill climb with Mabrey on the bench having fouled out in
the first overtime period, but still managed to pull within 60-58 ofVianney on a three from the top of the key by Faith Masonius.Manasquan could not, however, get the ball back within one scorethanks to Campbell’s eight straight makes from the line.
After staring down the possibility of another defeat whileknowing this was the final game they would play together, St. JohnVianney’s senior-dominated team pulled it together to win theirchampionship.
“We knew we just had to complete thebusiness that we started this season,”Pinho said. “Coming into this game, wesaid, ‘No matter if we have to go toovertime like we did or fourth quarters,we’re going to win this game. We hadto play with our heart and guts andthat’s exactly what we did and we cameout on top.”In addition to her 27 points, Masonius grabbed nine rebounds to
lead the Warriors. Mabrey scored 10 points before fouling out andClark poured in eight of her 13 before halftime while also handingout five assists and notching three steals. Addie Masonius andGeissler also finished with five assists each.
St. John Vianney took a 32-24 lead to the halftime locker roombehind an balanced offensive effort, but Manasquan stayed withinstriking distance by turning the game into a defensive battle in thethird – one that saw the Warriors outscore the Lancers 5-3.
“They were trapping and running allkinds of different things at us,” Karpellsaid. “We were trying to get the balldown low to Kimi, but we reallyweren’t getting good looks like we didin the first half. They did an excellentjob in the third into the early fourthquarter before we obviously foundenough to get us to overtime. Once wewere in overtime, I thought we ran ouroffense a little better.”
The Warriors will return their entirerotation next season and also expect toget junior center Victoria Galvan backas a senior after the 6-foot-2 centermissed this season with a torn ACL.
Manasquan’s T of Cchampionship gameappearance was its third ina row and fourth in the lastfive years, two of whichended in championshipvictories.
“All year, we’ve saidwe’re not using our youth as an excuse to call this year arebuilding year,” Manasquan coach Lisa Kukoda said. “Ithink that it sits with us the same. It hurts because we knewthat we could have done some things better.
“It obviously gives us a lot to look forward to going intonext year, but we’ve got to be ready because theexpectations are going to be on us next year.”
Monday marked the second time the two ShoreConference Class A Central rivals went to overtime thisseason and the third time they played a game decided by asingle-digit margin.
St. John Vianney has never won the T of C with anunbeaten record, so this year’s one-loss championshipseason will go down as arguably the best of the sevenLancers championships. The Lancers, were, however, unbeaten within N.J., with their only loss coming against
Villa Maria Academyof Erie, Pa. in tripleovertime.
Karpell played onthe 1993 and 1995championship teams atVianney and afterwatching this groupbuild to its one-losschampionship season, the 10-year head coachputs this team up therewith the best Vianneyhas had to offer.
“You’ve got toestablish your goals ifyou want to achievethem. We had a bigheart-to-heart at theend of last seasonbecause I think theywere almost afraid tosay it out loud becauseif you fall short thenit’s a problem,”Karpell said. “Thisyear, there was nodoubt about what thosegoals were.
“They will lookback on this andunderstand when the T
of C banner goes up in the gym, they are going to be in theconversation with some of the greatest teams to come out of St. JohnVianney. Without a doubt: they are going to be in the conversation.”
Six seniors – Campbell, Pinho, Caponegro, Lebron, Pero andMegan Furch – will graduate at the end of the school year, as willKellie Crouch, who missed nearly the entire season with a stressfracture in her foot after starting last year as a junior.
“We all grew up together, we all played AAU together, we alldecided to go to high school together,” Pero said. “I think a big partof it, especially as seniors was that we’ve been with each other sincefifth or sixth grade.”
“Freshman year, we had eleven losses,” Campbell said. “We alwaystalk about how we started from the bottom, and it’s kind of true. Wespend every day, three or four hours a day together, we all hang out onthe weekends. We’re more like a family than any team I’ve ever beena part of. We’re like sisters.”
In a fitting tribute to the senior class, Karpell – with Pero fouled outof the game – ran Furch into the game for the final seconds to give theLancers an all-senior lineup on the floor as the final buzzer sounded.
Just as they did following Karpell’s first ever Shore ConferenceTournament championship victory, her seniors made sure to find payher back with a group hug.
“From a personal perspective, a lotof the players I played with were heretonight,” Karpell said. “We hadalumni all over the place and it’sbecause we always want to keep thattradition going. These kids here aresuch pillars of what being a LadyLancer basketball player is.”
