1. Observations and enhancements to point out — PREPARE YOURSELF

First, observe and note your lifestyle, list the aspects of your current kitchen and add a list of your new priorities, not to mention the little pleasures you want to enjoy, for example: dining area, a wine cooler, a glass cabinet, more drawers, more storage, maybe an island and freestanding furniture for the dining room?

Complete the forms attached to this guide, including the specifications of your appliances. If you plan to change them, check the measurements of devices that you plan to buy. Measure the width of the walls of the room who will receive the cabinets, make a quick sketch. To help you in your planning, a drawing grid is made available in the guide.

It is now time to make an appointment!

2. First Meeting - DEFINE YOUR PROJECT

Anticipate about an hour and a half for your first appointment in the store with a kitchen designer. It is during your first appointment that you can bring the form filled up beforehand as well as the measurements and the sketch of your room. 4 IMPORTANT MEASURES TO HELP YOU SKETCH YOUR ROOM

1. Measure the distance between the walls From one extremity to the other measure the distance between your walls. If it is a new construction or new walls, don’t forget to count the gypsum if it isn’t installed yet. Proof your dimensions by adding the measurement of each wall and comparing them to the total measurement.

Tip: since it can happen that the walls are not perfectly straight, measure at three different heights (floor, mid-wall, and ceiling), and keep the smallest measurement.

2. Location of windows and doors

Starting from the corner of the closest wall, measure the distance to the window and/or door frames. Then, measure the width and height, including the frames as well as the distance from the floor. If you plan on changing the frames for larger or narrower ones, it is important that you include them in your measurements.

3. Location of the Appliances, Electrical Elements, and Plumbing

If you wish to keep your appliances and your kitchen sink at the same location or that you cannot move them, measure the distance starting from the closest to the centre of the pipe and/or the outlet. Do the same for the power outlets, switches, and/or phone outlets. Note the composition of each of the walls (gypsum,, wood, plaster, ceramic, etc.).

4. Height of the Ceiling

Measure the height from the floor. This measurement is mostly important if you want to close your new cabinets to the ceiling.
