1 2016 Best of Missouri Market®
In 1991, two enterprising volunteers, Nora Stern and Ellen Dubinsky, undertook the momentous task of creating a marketplace in the Garden filled with the best food producers and artisans the area had to offer. This weekend, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Best of Missouri Market® by showcasing over 120 top-quality vendors offering handcrafted treasures, delicious foods and wines, and of course, beautiful plants. I am delighted to acknowledge and thank the hundreds of volunteers who devote countless hours of effort and support, and our generous sponsors who help to ensure the Market’s success. Nora and Ellen, we salute your vision, spirit, and generosity. Here’s to another 25 years of the Best of Missouri Market!
Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson President, Missouri Botanical Garden

Ingredients for Filling: 1 cup dark raisins ½ cup dark rum 4 - 8 oz. pkgs. cream cheese 1¾ cups sugar 1 tsp. rum extract ½ tsp. vanilla extract 4 large eggs

Compliments of Hank’s Cheesecake, a Best of Missouri Market heritage vendor
25th
Anniversary
Combine all ingredients in food processor fitted with a steel blade. Process graham crackers into medium to fine crumbs. Spread mixture evenly over bottom of an ungreased 9" loose bottom cheesecake pan 3" deep. Press mixture firmly into place with fingers to form crust.
Soak raisins in rum overnight. Preheat oven to 350˚. With electric mixer beat together cream cheese and sugar until smooth and creamy. Mix in extracts along with raisins and rum. With mixer at low speed, add eggs one at a time. Pour batter into prepared crust. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes. Remove from oven and cool on a cake rack. Chill before removing from pan and garnishing.
Melt butter in small saucepan over low heat. Stir in brown sugar and rum, then whisk until the color of the mixture lightens somewhat. Allow mixture to continue heating for 2–3 minutes or until it becomes thin enough to pour easily. Do not allow mixture to boil. Glaze can be poured or spooned around the top edge of the cake with some running down the side, or it can be used to garnish the cake in any other way you desire.

What To Do in Your Garden Now
OCTOBER All Month• Plant spring bulbs among hostas,
ferns, daylilies, or ground covers. As these plants grow they will hide the dying bulb foliage.
• Plant container-grown and balled-and-burlapped trees and shrubs now. Loosen the soil in an area five times the diameter of the root ball before planting. Mulch well after watering. Continue watering, if soils are dry.
• Store apples in a cool basement in old plastic sacks that have been perforated for good circulation.
• Sow cover crops such as winter rye after crops are harvested.
Week 1• Christmas cactus, potted azaleas,
and kalanchoe may be left outdoors until night temperatures drop to 40º F.
• Continue harvesting tender crops such as winter squash and pumpkins before frost. For best storage quality, leave an inch or two of stem on each. Dig sweet potatoes before a bad freeze.
• Gourds should be harvested when their shells become hard or when their color changes from green to brown.
• Cover tender plants with sheets or lightweight fabric covers to protect from frost.
2016 Best of Missouri Market® 12
Week 2• Cannas and dahlias can be dug
when frost nips their foliage. Allow the plants to dry under cover in an airy, frost-free place before storage.
Week 3• Transplant deciduous trees once
they have dropped their leaves.• Monitor fruit plantings for mouse
activity and take steps for control.• Continue mowing lawns until
growth stops. Keep leaves raked off lawns to prevent smothering grass. Now is a good time to apply lime if soil tests indicate.
Week 4• Plant tulips now.• Trees may be fertilized now,
following soil test guidelines.• Place wire guards around trunks
of young fruit trees for protection against mice and rabbits.
• Winterize mowers before storage.
