Wow! Our High Holy Days were a big success. The sanctuary and social hall were filled with people for every ser-vice until we closed the doors to the so-cial hall to set up for the break the fast. We set up extra chairs in the sanctuary for Yizkor and everything filled up again. Many thanks go to Rabbi Bentley, Cantor Anatole, Music Director Wayne Abravanel, Melamedet Arava Talve, our musicians, the choir, our staff, ushers and our many volunteers and participants. There are no thanks adequate to recognize Saul & Gail Jacobs for their 26th year of service to Temple Sinai with the food drive and food delivery, I will always remember what Gail told me when I asked why they keep doing it. “BECAUSE IT’S THE RIGHT THING TO DO.” Special thanks to Brian Paoletta, Brian Harnik and Ann Loeb who did the multigenerational Kol Nidre Appeal. Now, take a deep breath because the holidays are history. We have to keep the excitement going. In October, Social Action has a special program. In November there is a David Syme piano concert. In December, there is the Klezmer performance. We have momentum. Let’s keep it going. Feel free to contact me with your suggestions. Thank you for your support. Bob Glast President

Rabbi’s Message
Simchat Torah – A Reason for Celebration
The grand finale of the Jewish High Holy Days is the festival of Sukkot. It comes only a few days after Yom Kippur and is considered one of the most celebratory of all the Jewish holi-days. The biblical reference to this holiday commands us to be “...happy in your festival, you, your sons and daugh-ters.” (Deuteronomy 16:14) It is within this context that this eight-day long holiday begins, starting with the building of a Sukkah or temporary outside dwelling, where we enjoy festive meals with family and friends and ending with Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah, where we celebrate the completion of the Torah reading cycle by singing and dancing with the Torah scrolls around the sanctuary. This connection between the serious soul searching of Yom Kippur and the celebration of Sukkot is not accidental. After the deep introspection, repentance and personal resolutions that epitomize Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Sukkot is the affirmation of our culture and relationship with God. By going outside and feasting under the stars, we are given a literal out-side perspective of our lives ,as we emulate our ancestors liv-ing in the Sinai desert. Furthermore, the completion of the Torah reading cycle is the ultimate affirmation that the ideals and values we continue to study, debate and internalize, never get old. In fact, they are refreshed by our individual and collective life experiences. It is here we always find relevance from generation to genera-tion. Despite our difficult history and differences, the Jewish people stay united across the four corners of the globe. That is our true celebration; united as one family, one holy nation. Shabbat Shalom, V'Chag Sameach שבת שלום וחג שמח

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
As I write this glimpse into our Religious school, we have just come off our most holy of days, I was like a proud parent and so proud of our older students who par-ticipated in High Holy Day services, were Temple greeters passing out Prayer books to our congregants and guests, loaded food bags onto the food bank truck and delivered some beautiful and heartfelt speeches! They helped out with our Family services and in our children’s activities room. If they represent the future of Juda-ism, we can all breathe proud!
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year”...back to school time! On Sunday, Sep-tember 23, our Religious school opened the 5779 season with a Back to School wel-come back breakfast, hosted by our wonderful PTO (parent teacher organization). Our teenage “madrichim” or teachers helpers were on hand in full spirited moods, working to help out on our first day. As we are the only Religious school in the desert that serves Pre K through High School, we are so proud of our school. If you know any Jewish families with children in these age groups, who might not know of our school where we teach Hebrew, prayers, Jewish values, history and customs, please pass on our information and have them get in touch with me. Or better, get me their contact information, and I will gladly reach out to them with all of our information. Jewish education is so important to keep our traditions passing down to the next generation.
Thank you to those in our community who have donated this year to our Education fund. Your generosity and support are so greatly appreciated. Your donations make a difference in what we can offer our students and a hearty Todah Rabah (thank you) goes out to you from our students and teachers!
As we start off our Jewish year with a clean slate, I can’t wait to share with you our school activities as the year unfolds. We are going to shine on 5779! Warmly, Leslie Pepper Director of Education

We're starting off the year with a bang! We're going back to luncheons which most members thoroughly enjoyed in the past. Our first luncheon is on Tuesday, October 16 at noon and will include a presentation by our President (that's me) titled "What Happens When Harry Dies?" which focuses on living through the trauma of a death and how to prepare ourselves for flying solo. See the flyer on page 17 of this Shofar. Please join us --- registration is only $25, note the deadline is October 9. Please contact Sandie Eichberg at [email protected] after the deadline for late reservations. We want to be sure to have enough food for all! In November, our monthly study group based on "Pirkei Imahot: The Wis-dom of Mothers, The Voices of Women" will commence. Each month from November to April, we will present a 90-minute seminar twice --- on Tues-days mid-day and on Wednesdays evenings. Please see the flyer on page 9 of this Shofar. We hope you'll sign up and join us. One of our super-fun activities each year is gift wrapping at Barnes and Noble. We have 7 dates this year (December 2, 4, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 24). Please contact Sharyn McKee at [email protected] to sign up. This is a great fundraising activity for Women of Sinai every year. We all love gift cards to restaurants and local stores, and we all probably have some we're not using. Please consider donating them to Women of Sinai. We'll use them as raffle items to raise funds for our quarterly dona-tion to the Rabbi Avi Levine Religious School. Contact Sharyn McKee. Thanks to all who have paid dues to Women of Sinai this year. Remember that dues also go towards our donation commitment to the religious school.

Pirkei Imahot: “The Wisdom of Mothers, The voices of Women”.
The voices of our too long - silenced female ancestors. Discussions will be held in the Sinai Social Hall on the first Tuesday afternoon and first Wednesday evening each month and will be led by Arava Talve and Nesa Bland. The gatherings will focus on the questions surrounding our lives as women, women’s voices through the ages, and the perspectives we offer each other and the world today. Come and join the conversation and, in the process, help create our own written “herstory”. The women were at Sinai, too! Give voice to our ancient mothers and ourselves...It’s time! The world stands on three things: Torah, the service of G-D, and deeds of kindness. “In her study with Lois Shenker of Pirkei Avot 1:2 Rabbi Eve Posner responded to the passage with this thought: “The world rests on the shoulders of women who have been the source of strength, spirit and protection of our rituals and their homes.” $36.00 for members. $72.00 for non-members. Ten Paths to God Taught by Rabbi Bentley
Who am I? Why am I here? How then shall I live? Three Funda-mental questions every reflective human being will ask at some point in life. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks has prepared a ten - part se-
ries to guide Jews toward meaningful answers to these questions.
The opening unit focuses on the concept of Identity. As Jews, we are born into a family and a people who have a history. Who
are we? To which story do we belong?
The next three units look at the three great pillars of Jewish life: Prayer, Study and Mitzvot.
The curriculum then moves to the three great attributes:
Tzedakah, Chessed, and Faith.
The last pieces reach to the three great expressions of Jewish life. Israel, Kiddush Hashem and finally Responsibility
We have to make Judaism more compelling for the next genera-tion, intellectually, ethically and spiritually. Our values, heritage and way of life can provide a sustainable framework for all Jews
today as we navigate the many challenges faced in the 21st Century.

ARAVA TALVE MELAMEDET
Rabbi Tarfon and the elders were once reclining in the upper story of Nithza's house in Lydda, when this question was raised before them: Is study greater, or practice? Rabbi Tarfon answered saying: Practice is greater. Rabbi Akiva answered saying: Study is greater, for it leads to practice. Then they all answered and said: Study is greater because it leads to action" (Babylonian Talmud: Tractate Kiddushin 40b). I have had the privilege over the past 25 years to be a guide to Torah for students of every age. In fact, my youngest student, at heart, was 92 when he was called to Torah for the first time as a Bar Mitzvah. Jewish learning is a life long pursuit and Temple Sinai has made this a priority with a plethora of classes on the slate for this new year. My 2nd year adult Bnot Mitzvah stu-dents will continue their climb up the mountain as they prepare for their collective service in December of 2019. A new Adult Bnai Mitzvah class begins in October for anyone ready to experience the rit-ual for the first time or who has a desire to re-experience it as an adult. Beginning in No-vember, Dr. Nesa Bland and I - in partnership with the women of Sinai - will be facilitat-ing “Pirkei Avot: The Voices of Women” a gathering based on the new book, Pirkei Imahot (available in the gift shop) that focuses on adding our voices as women today to the wis-dom of our ancestors. Nesa will also be teaching a mini-series, on Fridays in February on Ethical Wills. Nesa will guide you through the process of creating your own ethical will using personal reflec-tions, memory and meaning. This fall, Rabbi Bentley will be teaching several classes including weekly Torah study and Lunch and 21stJudaism Wednesdays at noon. He’ll also start a new class, “Ten Paths to God,” which is based on a curriculum by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. “I’m excited about bring-ing the teachings of one of my teachers to Temple Sinai,” Rabbi Bentley says. “I know this will be an amazing experience that stimulates important discussions on our lives as Jews on every level.” In addition, we will offer Introduction to Judaism and Beginning Hebrew that will be of-fered at times TBD – times that participants will help decide before classes begin. Please pick up a calendar of classes in the Temple office for a full list of offerings or check the website www.templesinaipd.org. Please call the temple office at 760-568-9699 to get your name on one or every class list as that greatly helps with planning! For more infor-mation on any of the above, email [email protected]

Temple Manager
With my first High Holy Days at Temple Sinai behind me I would be re-miss if I did not thank all those volunteers who made it possible. Micki Green-span, Terri Turner, & Nancy Singer were instrumental in getting mailings out, an-swering the phone, taking ticket orders, working as ushers and greeters during the holidays and anything else that came up. Thank you ladies. Last, but not least, Thank You to Rosanne Ezer and Sanford Friedman for providing the beau-tiful flowers that graced our Bimah during High Holy Days. I have recently learned that we have 2 passive fundraising opportunities here at Temple Sinai. If you shop at Ralph’s and have a Ralph’s savings card , you can register to have a small percentage of what you already spend be sent to Temple Sinai every quarter. If you have not already done so, stop by the cus-tomer service desk next time you are in Ralph’s and have them add the temple to your card. Amazon has a similar opportunity at smile.amazon.com. Log on and designate Temple Sinai as your charity of choice, and we will get a quarterly check from Amazon. Once you set either or both of these up, you never have to think about it again; it just happens. It just like magic. If you have a submission for the November Shofar, I need to have it no later than October 15th.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. [email protected]

Jackie Leany—Tikva Pre School Director Hirschberg Family Education Center What a wonderful beginning of the school year. The children were greeted enthusiastically by their teachers and so excited to explore their new activity centers both inside and outside. They were espe-cially excited about our new play area. It is so beautiful and a wonderful place to paint, create music, use manipulatives, and do yoga. The most exciting part of our new area is our Arroyo. The children are helping to build it by filling it with rocks they purchased ($5.00 for a bucket or $15 for a wheelbarrow). These rocks have been used for math, science, oral language, critical thinking, collaboration, and art. They were even used for our Jewish Curriculum when they painted “kindness rocks”. The children are enjoying many of the activity centers throughout the play yard, but this new area is a fantastic gathering place.
The Knapp family donated the labor to build our new play area Although we have daily opportunities to learn about Jewish values, culture, traditions, and holidays, the children have a special Jewish Curriculum where Ms. Dina shares with them unique experiences. This month, we have celebrated Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot. We look forward to our weekly Shabbat with Rabbi Bentley and Zayde Saul, as well as our fantastic weekly music class with Mr. David.
