It has been a long and winding road from conception to operation for this

vessel. The contract to construct both EDT Jane and EDT Hercules was originally awarded to Andalucían shipyard, Astilleros de Sevilla, with the original aim that both vessels would be operational by 2010. However, the yard got as far as launching EDT Jane and had commenced work on EDT Hercules before running into financial difficulties, which eventually resulted in its closure. For a while the build process was halted whilst various alternative options were considered. During this time several yards were weighed as potential sites for the continuation of the build process. Eventually, in 2012, the LaNaval yard was awarded the contract to construct both vessels along with a Finnline ferry that Astilleros de Sevilla had been

in April. cyprus-based EDt Offshore took delivery

of the vessel back in October last year. EDt Jane,

along with her sister vessel, EDT Hercules, was

constructed by the LaNaval shipyard in bilbao,

Northern Spain. this is the first time the yard has

constructed vessels for EDT.

responsible for. At the time that the build contract was transferred the superstructure of EDT Jane was almost complete and the vessel was towed to LaNaval for the completion of the steelwork and outfitting.

Even after her delivery to EDt, the vessel was to undergo further outfitting prior to being ready for operations. EDt Offshore informed Shipbuilding Industry that her first call was to gydnia, Poland where marine Projects installed increased accommodation and two rOV hangars.

Following this she moved onto Kristiansand, Norway, for installation of a 70t mcgregor offshore crane.

Latest Offshore Supply Equipment

EDt Jane was designed by Norwegian company, ulstein Design and is of their X-bow PX105 class of platform supply vessels. the design specifications required that the vessel have the capacity to transport general cargo to offshore site as well as dry bulk and liquid bulk in tanks, to ensure safety and efficiency when the vessel is being loaded or discharged. To be able to discharge cargo at the offshore platforms the ability to maintain precise position was also necessary. For this the yard installed Kongsberg DP2 to EDt Jane.

to enable the function of offshore supply EDT Jane has been designed with some generous specifications, including a deck load capacity of 2,300t and a cargo storage area of 950m2. She is 88.8m in length and 19m at widest beam.

to facilitate lifting the vessel has been outfitted with an electrohydraulic deck crane with a capacity of approximately SWL 2t at 17m outreach. Additionally she is equipped with two hydraulic hoisting winches of approximately 10t pull at first layer, containing 230m of 22mm wire.

Low Maintenance Bulk Handling

EDT Jane’s design incorporates a randaberg bulk handling system. the features of this particular arrangement include six tanks for dry bulk, one duplex

bHS compressor, one mucking ejector for tank cleaning, two water separators and two loading/discharge systems with monitoring from cargo control. The design was developed with low maintenance and

reliability in mind. the bottom fluidising system ensures the tanks are emptied by the most efficient means possible, whilst cyclones remove dust debris such as cement from the vent-line. the system contains no filters or rotating parts.

North Sea-WorthyLaNaval initially outfitted the vessel with

accommodation for up to 23 people. the accommodation is located in the vessel’s superstructure at the bow and above the main deck, distributed along five decks and the bridge deck. After delivery EDt Jane received additional accommodation for a further 50 personnel.

All accommodation has been designed and developed to meet the demands of the North Sea market. to that end comfort was of utmost importance and all cabins have been outfitted with tV, radio and internet facilities. Additionally, the vessel’s design incorporates three day rooms, laundry facilities, a gym, a hospital and office and conference facilities.

Efficient PropulsionPropulsion is via an efficient dual diesel-

electric combination system for ecological performance and additional maneuverability. The propulsion system produces around 6,770ekW thanks to four Wartsila generator sets.

the Schottel propulsion sytem, in addition to the generators, contains two 2,700mm diameter azimuth propellers, each capable of 2,500kW of thrust.

there is also a retractable azimuth thruster, with a diameter of 1,650mm and an output of 850kW for purposes of maneuverability, a controllable-pitch thruster with a diameter of 2,450mm and 1,200kW output, two harbour gensets of 300ekW each and an emergency genset with an output of 150ekW at 1,800rpm.

ROV Support CharterAberdeen, uK-based bibby Offshore

have recently announced the signing of a contract to charter EDT Jane in her capacity to provide rOV support solutions. the move comes amidst considerable investment from bibby Offshore in their subsea support capabilities.

EDT Jane will be mobilised in April this year, with a full survey and inspection spread. The charter, which will take the bibby Offshore fleet up to eight vessels and will run initially for 180 days, with options to extend for a further 3 years. the move comes after a period of sustained growth for bibby Offshore’s sister company, bibby remote Intervention Limited (brIL).

mike Arnold, bibby Offshore’s chief Operating Office for the western hemisphere, said, “The charter of the EDT Jane continues to expand our service offering for our oil & gas clients and will continue North Sea Irm scopes…as part of our ongoing centrica project.

“This brand new vessel is a valuable addition to the fleet. the contract will involve our skilled and dedicated team providing full Irm activities, pipeline and structural inspection and light construction support…”

brIL is installing a mixed fleet of work and observation class rOVS onboard the EDt Jane. these include an SmP 150hp Qasar work class rOV, SeaEye cougar inspection class rOV and a SeaEye Lynx observation inspection class rOV.

EDT OffshoreEDt Offshore commenced operations in

1980 as ship managers and operators. they supply offshore support vessels to the international oil and gas industry. this includes survey, diving and rOV operations.

LaNaval Shipyardthe LaNaval Shipyard has been in

operation for over 100 years and specialises in the construction of suction dredgers and vessels for the offshore oil & gas industries as well as ro-Pax ferries.
