Why Shield?I happened to be born on the very same day

as the first edition of a national newspaper. All

children born that day in the UK were eligible

to receive a commemorative silver mug with

an inscription on it. Being as I was my

parents’ first child they were very excited, had

my name published and received one of the

commemorative mugs.

It became a small part of my childhood story,

always visible in our living room. That was

until it was stolen along with other items in a

night-time burglary at our home. The burglary

however is but a small part of the story. For

my parents there came long lasting emotions

such as fear, loss, anger and insecurity.

For me my commemorative mug has gone

forever, an irreplaceable part of my childhood,

which connects me to my parents.

In later life I became a Detective with the

Metropolitan Police Service placed with the

responsibility of running many operations

against criminals, some of who were burglars.

It is not until you become a police officer that

you see fully the scale of burglary that

operates overnight and throughout the day.

I have been engaged in debriefing exercises in

which individuals have confessed to me

literally hundreds of burglaries. They were

usually young with no specialist skills and just

knew that here in the UK we have never been

particularly good when it comes to home

security. With very little effort they could enter

most homes.

When visiting victims of burglary I felt very

frustrated about the crime prevention

solutions that were being offered at that time;

a bolt here or a mortice lock there, yet I knew

from my experience that these merely delay

the inevitable if the premises has become a

target.

Occasionally the tables were turned and I had

to go and arrest those burglars and force

entry through their front doors, which were no

better. Despite the door opening equipment

issued to police most police officers, like a

burglar, will gain entry to an address in

seconds with just with a kick or a shoulder

charge.

It is said the seven most expensive words in

business are, “We have always done it that

way.” Well, I am pleased to say there is now a

better way to secure your home rather than

just fitting locks and bolts or fitting grills and

gates over your traditional doors and

This shop had been the victim of aburglary in which the original door wascompletely destroyed. A temporary door(left) was installed by local locksmiths.

For a permanent replacement, theowners naturally wanted a high securitydoor to eliminate the risk of a repeatbreak-in.

Based on meticulous research, Shieldset about designing and building acustom replacement door that matchedthe specific architecture of the buildingand its neighbours. They were able toexactly match the brass fittings, andprovide a perfect colour match. Thefinished result came complete withShield’s signature blend of incrediblestrength and classic design.

Their existing glass-fronted door (below)certainly lacked a robust level of security,but also needed a more stylish entry thatwas in keeping with their address.

Shield were engaged to research the area’s history and to design and build a custom-made secure entrydoor that was not only significantly moresecure, but also provided a much moreimposing entrance.

Following a burglary, this apartment had a temporarydoor installed by a local locksmith. The dark marksare remains of a forensic examination by the police.

The owner chose the total protection of a Shield level3 security door. It was produced as an exact replicaof the original, but with the added benefit of ourultimate security protection.

In addition we added steel plating to the surroundingwall for additional security with the bonus ofadditional thermal, sound and fire insulation.

To ensure the security of our doors we are constantlyrunning tests at the famous IFT Rosenheim testinglaboratory in Germany. We never become complacent.We’re always looking for ways to improve the security ofour doors.

We also test our doors to ensure that they remain unchangedover long periods of use by simulating the door usage in ahome – only we’re much harsher on them then you willever be.

We punish our doors by opening and shutting them over200,000 times, just to ensure that they still have the samelevel of security they had the first time they were opened.We also test for durability, wind, water and fire resistanceand the ability to withstand impact.

These tests continue to prove the level of excellence builtinto every one of our doors, and the security, reliability andseamless operation of every product we sell.

Certification of Bullet resistanceWe have a range of bullet-proof doors forcustomers with special security needs. All ballistic tests were carried out to thestrictest German standards.

Burglar resistance tests are also carried out atthe IFT Rosenheim laboratory in Germany.

Certification of Fire resistanceShield Front Doors provide protection againstfires – accidental or deliberate. Tests are carriedout to meet UK fire ratings as well as regulationsin the strictest certified European laboratories.

Certification of Durability: EN1191Shield doors are automatically opened and closedover 200,000 times to ensure that they still havethe same level of security they had the first timethey were opened.

Certification of Thermal TransmissionShield doors are Energy Efficiency-rated to keepthe heat in during winter, and the heat out duringsummer.

Certification of sound insulationShield doors are tested to ensure thatnoisy conditions are kept out.

Certification of Water & wind resistanceShield doors are designed to withstand heavyrain, roaring wind and buffeting to ensure youare always snug and warm.

Main and additionallocks are installed inprotective steel boxes.

Security hinges haveheight adjustmentmechanisms.

On the hinge side there are eight 16mmdiameter locking bolts.

On the lock side, thereare six locking bolts and two additional boltsdirected upwards anddownwards. Each bolt is protected by a steelsleeve in the door frame.

The inner door is of acombined structure:grating, steel sheet and grating again. Even if the outsidegrating was damaged,the door is still

protected by the steelplate and inside grating.

Double thermalinsulation: a 3 cm layerof rock wool on bothsides of the steel sheetprovides excellent noiseand thermal insulation.

The entire structure is covered by finishingboard whose colourand design can selectedfrom an extensivechoice

The lock pins areprotected againstdamage not by steelsheet, but by a 15 mmthick bent profile.

The frame is fixed in theopening by 17 pins,protected by steel linersof 24 mm.

Testing at the acclaimed IFT laboratory in Rosenheim, Germany witnessed the testerstrying to break this door continuously for 77 minutes. They tried crowbars, hammers,cutting and drilling tools but were not able to break in. This door is impenetrable.

After these tests, the Shield Premium door was awarded the 4th security class (WK4according to EN 1627:2011 standard). At least one of the locks installed in this doormodel must be no lower than 7th security class. Shield Premium has excellent soundinsulation (45 dB) and protects against fire for up to 45 minutes (EI45).

The new Shield Premium FB is a bullet-proof version of the door, which was tested atthe Beschussamtes Ulm laboratory in Germany, achieving EN1522 standard. The doorwas awarded a level of bullet resistance of FB4, capable of resisting shots from a 9 mmhandgun. The door can be single or double, supplied with bullet-proof glass, and canopen both inwards and outwards.

The Shield Premium is suitable for both apartments, and external doors for homes andcommercial properties..

A “Secret door chain” is a security device unique to us. It enables the user to open themain door to take in mail or vet any visitor without risking an unwanted forced entry.

“Secret door chain” specifications: l Withholds the load up to 530 kg (tested in VGTU laboratory, Lithuania). l Invisible and inaccessible from the outside, therefore impossible to cut withany tools in attempt to break in through the opened door.

Panic rooms

At Shield we consider it our job to reassure andprotect, rather than frighten. But we also know

that for some of our clients there is a real risk ofharm from the outside world, and we need toprovide protection and reassurance for them.

Panic, or safe rooms, are there to provide an ultra-safe location inside your

home, where you and your family can retreatduring a robbery or other threat. Think of a

panic room as a vault for your most valuableasset, your family.

Usually the door is made from a double-coremetal with a heavy deadbolt where the need for

a key is eliminated.

If you need to use your panic room, then youwill also need to contact emergency services.Therefore a secure means of communication

with the outside world is imperative and a videomonitor that shows all activity outside the door

and in the house is a worthwhile investment.

Although it’s called a panic room, rememberthat the purpose is not for you to panic, but for

you to be safe.

About our panic roomsl We construct our walls from floor to ceiling for

structural continuity.

l We use steel studs for our walls, and brace themwith reinforcing ties, then cover them with bulletresistant material such as Kevlar.

l We cover the bullet resistant material withsheetrock, tile or other decorative finishes.

l We overlap resistant sheets to ensure there areno weak points.

l We incorporate all necessary facilities such aswiring, plumbing and ventilation (evaluating thepotential threat of poisonous gases) and buildaccording to the threat.

l Our floors are concrete whenever possible, andreinforced to allow for the added weight of theroom.

l Doors are bullet-resistant with internal steelframing. We also use hardware that can providesubstantial, secure locking.

l Sound insulation prevents attackers from hearingyou, or you hearing them.

l We incorporate the finest surveillance andcomputer equipment.
