Salinas, known as “The Salad Bowl of the World” due to its production of lettuce and other crops, is Monterey County’s largest city and its employment center, with about one-third of all county jobs. Agriculture makes up the largest portion of Salinas’ economic base, while more than 100 manufacturing firms also reside in Salinas.

In spite of economic downturns, both the city and county are resolved to spark an economic rebound and will continue to promote long-term growth and encourage agricultural innovation. Most significantly in 2011, the city council approved a new proposed 257-acre agricultural business park on the city’s southern outskirts. The proposed center would consist of five parcels zoned for ag-industrial usages and over 4 million square feet of development space for cooling, processing and shipping facilities. The project is intended to promote long term economic growth, retain more value locally in the strong agricultural industry in Monterey County, as well as provide thousands of new jobs. The center will be built on farmland to the south, off of Abbott Street.

Salinas is located just 18 miles from Monterey and Carmel, world famous vacation sites.

Monterey County is located on the Pacific Coast of California, with its northwestern section forming the southern half of Monterey Bay (Santa Cruz County forming the northern half). The county seat is Salinas. Monterey County is a member of the regional governmental agency, Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments.
