Sir Arthur Conan DoyleSir Arthur Conan Doyle 1859-1930

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland

Studied to be a doctor and set up a practice at the age of 25

His practice ended up being unsuccessful, but he ended up meeting strange patients that inspired several characters in his stories

Dr. Bell, a professor, inspired Doyle to base his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes, due to his ability to diagnose disease through deductive process

Sherlock Holmes first appeared in A Study in Scarlett in 1887

His second appearance was in A Sign of Four in 1890

The beginning of his popularity was in Strand Magazine, where a series of short stories entitled “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” rocketed his popularity among readers

Sherlock Holmes and his nemesis, Professor Moriarty, were both killed in 1893’s “The Final Problem”

The public DEMANDED that Doyle bring Holmes back to life

Doyle did so in 1902 with “The Hound of the Baskervilles”

His last story was “The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes” in 1927.
