THEMES AND GENRE
The themes presented in Sherlock Holmes are stereotypically found in crime, drama mystery program. We have the detective Sherlock, this is common for a crime themed program as we usually need someone to solve it. There are hints of comedy between Watson and Sherlock, this is commonly used in crime/mysteries to build relationships between characters before something terrible happens.
Themes such as murder appear a lot in crime/mysteries as they are base of the genre. The murder creates the problem in which the villain has caused for the detective to solve.
Themes – Death, mystery, friendship, crime solving, light comedy Genre – Crime, mystery, Drama
Friendship isn't usually found in crime/mysteries but this isn’t the case for Sherlock. We see Sherlock grow and bond with Watson which influences the show in many ways. The convention makes the program what it is now as Sherlock fights to keep his only friend safe.
Light comedy can also be found within Sherlock. This is most likely used to give the audience a rest from tension brought on by the murder/mysteries.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience for Sherlock would be young adults and above. I say this because you have to have certain amount of intelligence and patience with crime/mysteries which younger audience members may not have. The genre itself stereotypically relates to older target audience members due to mature scenes such as death and corruption. I would say that the target audience is manly aimed for British viewers as it is themed in London/Britain which will catch the attention of the target audience who live there. I would say that it’s stereotypically aimed more towards men due to the gendered themes such as killing and male dominate detectives. All characters are males apart from two supporting female characters, this will make it more targeted towards men as it doesn't feature many females.
