“A huge success” was the verdict on our meeting on 4 March. Members from bothKelling and Holt Probus Clubs joined Cromerand Sheringham Probus Club for lunch and tohear a very entertaining talk by David Clayton, the Editor of BBC Radio Norfolk.

A total of 56 diners enjoyed the excellent lunchand service provided by Jason Brown and theteam at the Links Hotel in West Runton. Theseating plan was arranged so that each memberwas seated next to at least one member of another club, so everyone met new people.

The meeting was chaired by Dave Vickery(C&S), an apposite Grace was provided byClive Mitchell (Kelling), Brian Bullock (C&S)proposed the loyal toast and the vote of thanksto the speaker was proposed by Ray Morgan(Holt).

Dave Vickery commenced the meeting by welcoming everybody, thanking the treasurersand secretaries who had dealt with the bookings and payments. Dave also thankedForbes Pearson (Holt) for suggesting an event where clubs joined together and askedeveryone to blame Forbes if things did not go well, rather than him!

David Clayton proved an inspired choice of speaker for the event. He was excellent

company during some lively debates overlunch and then we were privileged to enjoy a thoroughly entertaining and professional performance.

He started off on his topic “Cars of my Life”,moved into some amusing anecdotes from hiscareer in broadcasting and then returned to aninteractive discussion about cars that membershave owned. It was clear to all that he was notusing notes but nobody would have guessedthat he had not prepared anything specificallyfor the occasion either!

In proposing the vote of thanks, Ray Morganwas also able to provide some supplementary technical information, explaining that in thecircumstances in which David’s father used tohit his car with a hammer, a broom-handlewould have been a better choice.

In conclusion, John Dunsire (Kelling chairman) proposed an impromptu vote ofthanks to Dave Vickery for organising such an enjoyable event and said that he hoped there would be a repeat.

The next meeting on Tuesday 1 April will feature a talk entitled “Bogs and Baguettes” (The trials and tribulations of the single traveller) by Daniel Adams. Daniel is a very experiencedinternational tour guide specialising in holidaysfor single travellers. There will be plenty of anecdotes to entertain but he is an expert intravel arrangements for mature and single people and a source of excellent advice.

Prospective members are welcome to comealong as visitors to enjoy the meal, the talk andthe company of Probus members. The club isopen to gentlemen who are retired or nearly so.

If you are interested, or know someone whomight be, please contact Dave Vickery on01263 824306 for more information.

In February, North Norfolk Photographic Society held their AnnualCompetition for projecteddigital pictures and on 5 March it was the turnfor printed pictures.

The judge was Ray Kimberley, who travelledup from Cambridge (and

back) for the evening. With an amusing, dryhumour, Ray mentioned that some years ago hehad been guitarist in a pop group.

Members provided over 80 photographs for the competition and all were commented uponand judged. Paul Keates - who had won the

projected image a few weeks earlier - won the competition and came second as well.‘Morning Shower’ was the winner and is alovely image of a swan in a shower of waterdrops, also reflected in the surface of the water.

Second was‘After theStorm’, amoodyimage ofsunlightcomingthroughdark cloudsacross the Cley mudflats.

These and other images can be viewed on theSociety’s website.

The vote of thanks wasgiven by Bill Day in hispolished style.

The Society meets on alternate Wednesdayevenings at The HoltCommunity Centre.Visitors are most welcome and further information can be foundeither from the website www.nnphotosoc.org,or from Secretary Judy Knights on 01263825418.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has welcomed the announcement byLiberal Democrat Schools Minister David Laws that Norfolk school will receive an extra £16 million next year. The Coalition Governmentinherited from Labour a fundamentally unfair system of school funding– which calculated school funding based on what schools had receivedbefore, not on their actual needs. Similar schools just miles apart can befunded at completely different levels because they happen to fall acrossLocal Authority boundaries.

In last summer’s Spending Review, the Coalition announced it wouldconsult on introducing a new, fairer way of allocating funding betweenschools. For the first time in a decade, funding will be allocated to local

areas on the basis of the actual characteristics of their pupils and schools, rather than simply on the basis of historic levels of spending.

Across the country, the Government will be delivering a £350m boost to schools in the areas that are currently least fairly funded. No LocalAuthority will receive a cut in its per pupil school budget, but about fourin 10 areas will see an increase.

Commenting on the announcement, North Norfolk MP Norman Lambsaid “It is fantastic that for the first time a government is taking steps toaddress the historic underfunding of Norfolk’s education system. This£16m increase in funding will help improve education across the county, giving every child a fair start in life.”

Little Snoopi hit the headlines when at just fourteen weeks old he found himself abandoned on a freezing cold January night in Downham Market.

Luckily a passer-by heard a whimper from hispet carrier which had been hidden in a hedgeon a residential street. Whilst being containedin a carrier kept Snoopi safe from traffic thisalso meant that had he not been found, he

could have caught hypothermia. TheRSPCA suspects that Snoopi was an unwanted Christmas gift and sadly

his story isn’t unique.

January is an incredibly busy time forthose working in animal rescue. It iswhen people tire of their new pet and decide a lifelong commitment isn’t forthem. Thankfully Snoopi’s tale has ahappy ending. He’s found his foreverhome here in North Norfolk.

Luckily hisnew familywere watchingthe eveningnews when his plight wasreported upon andwere straight on thephone to offer him a home. This cheekychappie has settled inwell, he loves to playwith squeaky toysand stealing his owners’ socks!

Snoopi has foundsome new friends atAnimal Magic Dog

The four little kittens waiting to be blood tested continue to thrive andhave now had their first vaccination. Three of them are completelyblack, although Kato, who is the largest and naughtiest little boy, isblack and white. They are chunky little kittens with nice round faces; allare very mischievous, and are enjoying life, playing together. MeanwhileBilly, the little cat mentioned and pictured last time, has had his eye removed. David, his vet, advised us that the glaucoma had been causedby previous damage to the eye and although we will need to monitor hisother eye for the time being, he believes he will not have any problemsthere. As Billy is a very affectionate little cat (his fosterer calls him herlittle cuddle bucket) we believe he will soon find a loving new home.Patsy, one of our kittens, has recently returned to our care as she was not getting on with the resident cats and suffered several bouts of cystitiswhich may have been related to this. A recent visit to the vets confirmedshe had crystals in her bladder and she has been put on a special newfood which, hopefully, will help resolve the problem. If, however, she

does not respond to the treatment she will needfurther investigations to get to the bottom ofthe situation. Frequent visits to the litter traydo not bother her and she is a very confidentlittle kitten, who enjoys a cuddle, but only inthe mornings. After that she is far too busyhaving a play to sit around on her fosterer’sknee. We will let you know how she is gettingon, next time.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten pleasegive Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats beforegiving us a call on the above number to findout where any particular cat is being fostered.

We held our first open afternoon on Saturday15th March and were overwhelmed by theamount of people through the doors.

Having never held such an event we were unsure of the response, however we need nothave worried. As soon as 2pm arrived people

flocked to the purpose built surgery to have alook behind the scenes. We had demonstrationsof the ultrasound machine, digital X-rayprocessor and various critters to see under the microscope.

People had the opportunity to look intheatre and see how a spay operationwould be performed, whilst in theprep room at the dental table a mocktooth extraction was under way with the children performing the extractions!

We had various associatesin the spacious waitingrooms including Dave Brice our dogbehaviourist, Homefinders greyhound rescue,NNCLT and Animal Magicwith games andraffles, moneyraised by our

We were delighted to seemany of our regular clients

coming along to see just what goes on whenthey leave their much loved pets with us for

any procedures and welcomed many newclients through the doors too. Overall itwas a really good afternoon enjoyed bystaff and visitors alike, with plenty of teaand cake to finish off.

Miramar Open Day

At the end of February we had a fascinating talk from Hilary Cox, a former Mayor of Cromer who spent 21 days trekking up to the base camp on Mount Everest. Base camp sounds like the bottom ofsomething but this base camp is at 17,500 feet. They walked from eightin the morning until nightfall with just breaks for drinks and meals. Theconditions were basic to say the least and no showers or baths wereavailable for that time. To pay over £2,000 for such a trip when you

could go on a nice comfortable cruise seems to some of us a waste ofmoney, but Hilary seems to have thrived on it.

Our talks are held at St. Joseph's Church Hall in Cromer Road. Admission is £3 which includes tea or coffee and homemade cakes andeveryone is welcome - you do not have to be a member of the Society. There is plenty of parking for all.

Following the very successful exhibition of Mary Randle and Lance Beeke duringMarch, Naomi Brangwyn, glass artist will beexhibiting at The Gallery Norfolk from April5th to 26th. You have the chance to meetNaomi on April 5th all day to discuss her work and techniques.

Every artist works in a medium, such as oils, watercolour, charcoal, stone or bronze. NaomiBrangwyn’s preferred medium is glass –stained glass. If those words suggest solemnchurch windows, then think again. Naomi’spieces are lively, imaginative, a breath of freshair – and perfectly scaled for a domesticsetting.

Many of them evoke the landscapes and seascapes of East Anglia – she has lived inSuffolk since the 1980s, and onits coast since 2001. “Moving toa home by the sea was significantfor both my life and for my artisticidentity,” says Naomi. “It was a timefor new beginnings – and one of those wasmy work with glass. Norfolk in particular inspires me with its unspoilt nature,” she continues. “It’s full of hidden secrets. You go round a corner in the road and a new viewunfolds. The county’s vast skies dictate themood as the light shifts in intensity and the

colours change ... energetic, calm or reflective.”

She does not, however, seek to portray specific locations: “It is more about using my imagination to capture an experience,” she says. “... A funday on the beach with the warm sun and breezeon your cheeks, and lunch in the beach hut or asolitary walk with the sand between your toes."

“It’s fascinating to take something that movesand changes and to capture its spirit in something as still and delicate as a piece ofglass,” she continues. “I never cease to be intrigued by the process of taking this hard, flat, brittle material and transforming it intosky or water, or something as soft and delicate

as a field poppy.”

Always exploring and always experimenting, Naomi uses traditional stained glass techniques, but produces art that is, as she says, “a uniquecombination of glass, lead and

nature”.

Often, she will literally add an extradimension by layering the glass – and

by integrating pieces of decorative metal orfound objects such as shells and pebbles. Engraving can also play a part. All this meansthat each of her pieces is different – this is artrather than design – and each is individuallysigned.

The Gallery’s owner, Polly Miller, explainsthat: “This is our first exhibition with Naomi, though her work has become closely associatedwith The Gallery Norfolk. The pieces we havechosen draw inspiration from Norfolk and itsscenery, which is very much in keeping withthe gallery’s ethos. With prices ranging from £30 to £395, small-scale pieces will be on show beside some quite ambitious and spectacularworks. The great thing is that each of them willbe right for someone’s home and that they openup new possibilities for display ... Yes, you canhang them on a wall, but you can also make afeature of them in a window. In a sense theyare made of light, and each one offers its ownever-changing play of colours, lines and textures, so they really do bring a space alive.”

Did You Miss the Mary Randle and Lance Beeke exhibition inMarch? If you did, you will be delighted to know that their work is stillavailable at the Gallery.

They are two local painters, bothendlessly fascinated by the play oflight.

For all their shared luminosity, the two artists inhabit different

environments. Mary’s vivid, almost tactile paintings of flowersevoke intimate and stylish interiors, while Lance, with his atmospherically shaded landscapes, favours the open air. An exampleof each of their evocative work isalongside - so pop down to theGallery for a triple viewing.

Twelveyoung people from Stalhamraised £200 for chosen chari-ties, Macmillan and B-EAT.

“We make sure that all our activities are ‘youth-led’, so that we continueto meet the direct and expressed needs of theyoung people we work with,” says senior youthworker William Mills, who has been “immensely impressed by the passion and imagination of young people in North Norfolk, and their positive efforts to make a difference in their local community”.

Over the past year, MAP’s youth workers havemade contact with over one hundred youngpeople, aged 11-19, through the popular HUBs,

Dear Margaret,My wife and I would like to thank all the kind people who helped us when I fell over in Cremers Drift on Wednesday 12 March.

I would especially like to thank Ken who took my wife Elsie toCromer hospital where the paramedic had taken me for treatment, and also our kind neighbours who brought us both home once I had received some first aid.

James Eldridge

Dear Margaret,Often we hear of poor care for theelderly in residential and nursinghomes – well here’s some positivecomment!

Three years ago sadly we had toadmit our 87 year old sister, JoanThirtle, into a local residentialcare home due to dementia, namely the Dormie on CliffRoad in Sheringham, underthe owner Roger Armoogumand his dedicated staff.

We wondered how things would work out with Joan usedto being a fiercely independent person. Her working life was thatof a highly competent cashier, also an accomplished musician.

Three years on her life has been a total revelation, happy and content in homely surroundings and caring staff.

Some months ago Joan ‘was caught’ entertaining residents on herbeloved piano when David Whitely, BBC’s Inside Out presenter, called for content for his programme, ‘Care of the Elderly’. Hewas suitable impressed with the running and daily programme ofentertainment within the home.

Fast forward to 3 March this year when Joan celebrated her 90thbirthday. The Dormie put on a superb tea for our family and staff.Joan had an absolute ball entertaining us all.

One question though – what do you give as a present to a 90 yearold?

Janet and I came up with ‘a reflections album’ – photographs spanning 100 years of family images. This meant trawling throughthe best part of 500 prints. This categorised compilation – over 100– was done and dusted in five days and this unique collection waspresented to Joan who said ‘I am absolutely spellbound – thankyou’.

Being a close knit family we do our level best to support aged lovedones in conjunction with the care home. Joan’s transition, thoughdifficult at the outset, has proved to be successful and beneficial. In the knowledge that she is safe, secure and well cared for 24/7,peace of mind all round - so thanks Dormie House, on our behalf, please take a bow.

Yours sincerely,Charles and Janet Thirtle

Sheringham Horticultural SocietySPRING SHOWAs I write this column Spring has arrived with arush and the daffodils, tulips and other spring trees, shrubs and flowers are putting on a wonderful displayagainst bright blue skies. No doubt we will have someless favourable weather in the next few weeks but we are already wor-ried that by the time our Spring Show is held on Friday, 11 April it maybe difficult to find many flowers still in perfect condition.

Members are therefore asked to do their best to find something to enterfrom their gardens. The schedule which is being circulated will basicallybe the same as last year but there are two new classes which are not dependent on the weather – hot cross buns and Easter bonnets - so whynot have a go. Full details will be in the schedule. Don’t forget that therewill also be a talk on Sheringham Park whilst the judge is at work. The Society has again been invited to take part in the SandringhamShow and build a small coastal garden –any volunteers?

I hope that members enjoyed the first Spring Newsletter produced byTony Chadwick.

If you have any enquiries about the society please phone me on 01263825364.

JAZZ TEAM AT THE GOATWe frequently bring you information about the Norfolk Dixieland JazzBand and particularly about its activities at The Goat Inn, Skeyton. Theband started about five years ago and quickly established itself as one ofthe best of its type in the region. Crucial to its popularity, of course, isthe quality of the musicians and their feel for the music they play.

Equally important, however, has been the band’s relationship with theowners of the Goat Inn. The band sees the venue as its home-base andsix dates were planned for 2014. The events in January and March wereso well attended, however and the atmosphere so good, that there willnow be an additional date on Sunday 6 April between the usual times of1.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m.

Spokesperson for the band, Vic. Brown, says “The Goat is a great placeto play. You can just drop in for a drink or have a meal in the restaurantor the garden room where the band plays. In the summer everythingmoves into the garden. Admission is free and the aim of the owners andthe band was to turn the venue into North Norfolk’s premier traditionaljazz venue. We feel that the success has been due to the team approachbetween everybody at The Goat and the band”. Working together isn’tjust a platitude at this venue.

In addition to 6 April, the band will be at The Goat on 1 June, 6 July, 3 August and 7 September. If you think about going along and wouldlike lunch it is essential to book. Tel: 01692 538600.

The picture shows the owners of the Goat, Jem (second from left), Jo and Judy (in the middle) with the guys in the band. A great team.

Weather Summaryby Ned NimbusThe past three months have turned out more or less as forecast althoughday and night temperatures have been higher mainly because the highpressure area has not been as far north as I thought it was going to be.

We still have a maritime climate regardless of this winter’s antics andthe past three that were cold and often snowy. The change seems to be,and it has been for some time, that there are more occasions when theweather pattern get set for a few months with little variation. This winterwas a good example of that when storm after storm came across from a cold North America and three large amounts of moisture at the southand west of Britain. Most storms turned north to the west of us so wewere spared the main forces of these depressions. The one that did crossthe north of Scotland did, however, have a major impact on our coastlinebut thereafter the very vast majority stayed out to the west bringing us alot of southerly gales but much less in the way of rain than further west.Frost and snow were notable absentees.

The next three months will see more of a mix of weather but that doesnot rule out the rogue air mass turning up out of season and at this timeof the year the power of the sun needs to be taken into account.

Top ambulance boss to address public meeting in CromerThe new Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, Anthony Marsh, will address residents of North Norfolk about his plans for the health emergency service.

Dr Marsh will be speaking at an Act on Ambulances campaign event and addressing the campaigners who fought for improvements when stories of poor response times were firsthighlighted more than two years ago. He will be the first Chief Executive to address membersof the public since a number of damning reports from the Care Quality Commission were firstissued over two years ago.

Anthony Marsh has joined the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) on a part-time basis, also continuing to work with the ambulance trust in West Midlands. He wasbrought in after concerns over poor response times in the East - in particular rural areas likeNorth Norfolk - and worries over savings within the service which had planned to reduce theambulance fleet in the area.

The event will take place on Monday 14 April at 8pm in the Cromer Community Centre on Garden Street. Suggestions for questions can be submitted in advance to [email protected] and updated information about the event will be online at www.actonambulances.co.uk.

Denise Burke, an Act on Ambulances campaigner and Labour's prospective parliamentarycandidate for North Norfolk, said "The Act on Ambulances campaign has been focusing onholding the ambulance trust and government health ministers to account over the failureswithin our local ambulance service.

I am confident that Dr Marsh is the right man to bring in the improvements that are neededwithin the trust, and I hope this year is going to be a turning point for EEAST. It is vital theyare as transparent as possible going forwards, so I am delighted to announce this event taking place in North Norfolk on 14 April.

This is a public meeting so members of the public are both invited and encouraged to join us to hear what Dr Marsh has to say, and also to put questions to the man in charge of our ambulance service."

Sheringham Lifeboat‘The Oddfellows’ B 818 Service Launch – Monday 17 March At 18.32hrs a former crewman informed a member of the Sheringham Lifeboat crew that a kayak had capsized in the surf whilst trying to come ashore at the west beach in Sheringham. His colleague in a second kayak was advised to wait offshore for assistance by the Sheringham Lifeboat.

At 18.35 hrs at the request of the station, Humber Coastguard paged the crew to launch thelifeboat which was launched at 18.40 hrs and on scene at 18.42 hrs.

The swell had been building all afternoon and at HW at 19.03hrs the swell was running atabout 1.5 metres and proved very difficult for the kayaks to ‘run’ ashore in the fading light. The canoeist and his kayak were taken on board the Lifeboat which returned safely to station.

Both men were checked by paramedics on scene and the person who had capsized was takento hospital for observation and further checks.

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHTWith the kind permission of Debbie and a very warm welcome from the staff in the Hub, wejoined in with the Coffee Morning on 25 February. We spoke to many of the customers explainingthat we are working towards Sheringham becoming a Fairtrade Town. The competition about teaand the raffle were popular, and £28 was raised for Fairtrade for Sheringham.

We took the Fairtrade Stall and a home-made Fairtrade Cake Stall to the Christian Aid Lent Lunchat St. Joseph's Hall on 5 March. Again we were publicising Fairtrade for Sheringham. The totalfor the cakes sold was £31.75.

On 7 March Brenda and a colleague Mary talked to the older children at Sheringham PrimarySchool about Fairtrade. Mary explained how a banana is sold in our shops for about 20p. Howmuch money would the person who grew the banana get for his months of care for the plant? 1p! Hard to believe. The children are taking part in a competition to find which Fairtrade productsthe Sheringham shops sell.

We'll be taking part in the Carnival on 3 August.Tricia Brooks and Brenda SmithFairtrade for Sheringham Committee

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC)Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, announced that Coun-cillor Glyn Williams would be joining NNDC’sCabinet following the announcement at theFull Council meeting on 26 February thatCouncillor Trevor Ivory had decided to standdown from the Cabinet.

Mr Williams, who lives in Long Common,Swanton Abbott, was first elected to the council in May 2011. His ward includes Felmingham, Skeyton, Suffield, Swanton Abbott, Westwick and Worstead.

He came to local prominence in 2008 as chairman of Cetag - Coltishall Eco-Town Action Group - a campaigning body of 14parish councils surrounding the former RAFColtishall base which were opposed to a proposal to turn it into an eco town.

Mr Williams will join the seven existing

members of the ruling Conservative Cabinet,Tom FitzPatrick (Leader), Rhodri Oliver(Deputy Leader), Angie Fitch-Tillett, RussellWright, John Lee, Benjie Cabbell Manners andWyndham Northam. His portfolio will includeLeisure and Cultural Services and CustomerServices.

Cllr. FitzPatrick said: “Cllr. Trevor Ivory hasmade a huge contribution to both North Norfolk District Council and the ConservativeGroup since we took over the administration ofthe Council nearly three years ago. Trevor hasmade a real impact in areas such as Housingand Legal Services and his vision in establishing the Big Society Fund has greatlybenefited communities and organisationsacross the whole of North Norfolk.

“I am extremely grateful for the unfailing support he has given me personally during

my time as Leader, particularly during theearly days. The groupis sorry to see himleave Cabinet and heleaves with both ourregrets and goodwishes for the future.I am pleased that wewill continue to havethe benefit of his knowledge and enthusiasm.

“I am delighted to welcome Cllr. Williams to the Cabinet. Glyn has had a long careerworking as an officer in local government. He has brought a wealth of experience to thegroup and I am pleased that we will be able tomake full use of this expertise in his portfolioresponsibilities. I am looking forward to working even more closely with him in thecoming months.”

Every time a local company hires an apprentice, their bottom line gets an averageboost of £2,009. This happens immediately, while the apprentice is being trained, and represents the benefit after typical wage and training costs for the East of England are deducted.

Last year, 740 people started an apprenticeshipin North Norfolk. This means that new apprentices alone provided a local boost ofaround £1,487,000 in 2012/13.

The number of apprentices has been increasingrapidly. Despite this, surveys show that 60% ofsmall businesses are missing out because theydon’t know enough about how apprenticeshipswork. Many assume that they are difficult toadminister and will involve a short-term cost.

The new research was commissioned by AAT,which has pioneered apprenticeships in accounting. Non-traditional areas like accounting now make up the majority of apprenticeships, demonstrating the huge expansion in the range and types available.

Commenting, Norman Lamb MP said “If theydon’t have one already, every local business inNorth Norfolk should consider employing anapprentice.

“By giving young people a chance, this research shows that they will also be boostingtheir bottom line. The benefit here of £1.5mhas made a real difference to the local economy, and that’s just from apprentices who began last year.

“Apprenticeship numbers have now doubled, with the Government making it a key priority. The Liberal Democrats are committed to building a stronger economy and a fairer society, in which everyone who wants it hasaccess to high-quality vocational training.”

The Chief Executive of AAT, Jane Scott Paul, welcomed the news “I am delighted that Norman Lamb is encouraging more companiesto employ an apprentice. Far from being a cost, apprentices bring benefits straight away.

“It’s really important that employers knowthere are apprenticeships for all shapes andsizes, including those in non-traditional sectors like accounting and law. That’s how apprentices boosted UK firms by £1.8 billionlast year.”

Norman Lamb MP: new apprentices give a £1.5m boost tobusinesses in North NorfolkNorman Lamb MP is calling for more local businesses to take on an apprentice, after new research revealed the extent of the benefits involved.

HANDYMANNew Multi-use Games Area Opensat Sheringham Sports GroundA new all-weather Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) was opened by Sheringham Mayor, DougSmith, at Sheringham Recreation Ground on Saturday 15 March. The event was also attended byRhodri Oliver, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Deputy Leader.

The flood-lit MUGA, which has been built on the site of three former underused and deterioratingconcrete tennis courts, can be used for a wide range of sporting activities, including tennis, football, basketball, netball and hockey by all age groups all year round. The project has been directed by Sheringham Sports Association, who manage the Recreation Ground, which itself is leased from NNDC.

NNDC Deputy Leader Rhodri Oliver, one of NNDC’s two representatives on the Sports Association and Member for Sheringham South, said “I am delighted that after all our hard workand support the Sports Association has now been able to provide these excellent sports facilitiesfor people in the town. So many volunteers have put in a huge amount of time and hard work intoturning the original vision into reality and it is great that it has paid off. I would like to thank allthe people who made this possible.”

The £113,000 project, which includes alterations to the pavilion to improve disabled access, has been assisted by a £15,000 grant from the NNDC Big Society Fund. A further £60,000 wassecured by the District Council from Tesco in lieu of a like-for-like playing pitch which formedpart of the original Tesco planning permission for the new Sheringham Community Centre. TheDistrict Council ring-fenced the funds for community use in Sheringham, passing responsibilityfor the final decision as to where the money would be best spent to the Town Council. The awardto the Sports Association was made by Sheringham Town Council at its meeting on 12 March2013.

Sport England then stepped in with match funding to complete the fundraising project and allowthe building of the excellent facility for the town, followed by Scira Offshore Energy who fundedthe revamp of the existing floodlights to bring them right up to date. The Sports Association isalso extremely grateful to Denny Construction, Michael Bacon (MB electrical), Priory Holdings,Weybourne, and SMG architects for their valued time, expertise and support in delivering theproject in the most cost effective way.

Charles Sanders, Chairman of Sheringham Sports Association, said “I am very grateful to everyone who has helped make this new all-weather multi games facility possible. There are no facilities as good as these nearby and, at last, our young sportsmen and women can train andplay in their own town. I hope this facility will also encourage more local people to participate inexercise and sporting activities. A lot of people have given a great deal of time and effort to makeit possible and I am so pleased for them all that we have been able to make this new all-weatherfacility available to our whole community.”

March Steam Gala at NNRNorth Norfolk Railway’s March Steam Gala held over the weekend of 8/9 March was well attended and hailed a success despite the setback of the late withdrawal of Sir Nigel Gresley.

Sheringham History GroupOn 5 March Mr. David Starling waited patiently while we had a brief AGM meeting of the Sheringham History Group.

Mr. Starling shared with us his personal collection of photographs and memorabilia, dates and information from 1898 to the present time. The talk was about Sport inSheringham-"a forte all my life". Perhapsthat may be the title of the book he has beenasked to write. Mr. Starling participated insport in Sheringham especially Cricket.

It is a fascinating history involving Upper Sheringham, the London gentry, the butchers and thebakers, ladies playing tennis in long dresses, teams repeatedly having to move to differentpitches and a variety of sports in the local area.

The history of sport is closely related to the history and development of Sheringham, so again a book would make a valuable record of those times and people.
