Donation from N&P Building Society ShowsSupport for Lifeboat StationContinued from front cover...
The money raised will be used to buy a new flag standard to be used for parade occasions, which will replace the old, worn one. A specialcamera to be used in sea operations and rescues will also be purchased.
Brian Farrow said “The generous donation will go towards providingthe Station with a new flag standard and a GoPro Hero3 camera which issomething the crew had requested.” He added that continued supportfrom N&P and the people of Sheringham was very much appreciated.
Branch Manager Michelle said “The Sheringham Lifeboat provides a great service for Sheringham and customers regularly support our on-going book sales and events which raise money for our local RNLI.Our shop features posters supporting the charity and our customers arealways happy to contribute.”
Sheringham Lifeboat Station is run entirely by volunteers from the localarea who are committed to saving lives at sea. Funds are raised throughthe generosity of the supporters and the RNLI Shop in Sheringham HighStreet and at the Lifeboat Station itself.
The Lifeboat Station, which has been in existence since 1838, has beenon numerous ‘shouts’ this year and continues to provide a reassuringpresence for those who use the sea around Sheringham for work orleisure.
Sheringham Becoming a Fairtrade Town Coffee MorningThe first event to help Sheringham become a Fairtrade town was a Coffee Morning at St Peter's Church on Saturday 26 October.
We served Fairtrade tea, coffee, biscuits and home-made cakes plussamples of very tasty Fairtrade chocolates, biscuits and bananas, kindlydonated by our local Co-op.
We are sure people enjoyed their morning as they generously donated£59.61 to help our campaign.
Future events we are planning are the Christmas Fair at the PrimarySchool, the Lights Switch - On on 6 December and the Christmas TreeFestival from12- 17 December.
We have begun asking shops and businesses whether they sell or use Fairtrade goods. This survey is necessary if we are to become a Fairtrade Town. Thanks to the shops already asked. It only takes threeor four minutes!

We’ve had a delivery of lots of board and picture books, fabulous fiction by top authors likeDavid Walliams, Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Liz Pichon (Tom Gates)and marvellous pop up non-fiction about space, sport, the human body and muchmore. Reading matters! A recent Institute of Education study found that childrenwho read for pleasure made more progress in maths, vocabulary and spelling be-tween the ages of 10 and 16 than those who rarely read. Children who were readto regularly by their parents at age 5 performed better in all three tests at age 16than those who were not helped in this way, although by the age of 10 childrenreading for pleasure was more vital to their progress than their parents’ educationlevels. Let us help you find your next great book. There is a good websitewww.whonextguide.com to look at or ask advice from a library assistant.

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Cabinet is set to approve plans to spend up to £100,000 to improve children’s playgrounds in the district.Following a thorough review of the 29 council-owned playgrounds in North Norfolk, a report set to be approved by the council’s Cabinet on 4 November recommends that up to £100,000 be spent on replacingand improving equipment at four sites, in North Walsham, Sheringhamand Cromer.
Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assetssaid “This is really good news for the communities concerned. The fundswere included in this year’s budget and following a thorough assessment and the involvement of local families we have identified fourpotential sites for improvement. Three will go ahead very soon, inCromer and North Walsham, while we are working with local residentsto finalise ‘first phase’ improvements and then further plans for thefourth, at Cromer Road, Sheringham.”
John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “Children’s playgrounds are important for local communities. Theyare places not just where children can play and enjoy being with friends, but where parents can also meet, and they help to generate a real community spirit. This council wants to help local communities to help themselves, and by talking to and working with local people to improve their children’s play facilities this is exactly what we are doinghere.”
The playgrounds set to benefit from the funding are: Cromer – Fernsfield (replacing unsafe equipment that had already been removed - £8,000) and The Meadow (replacing equipment that had been removed in 2012 - £32,000);
North Walsham – Acorn Road (equipment for younger children -£13,000);
Sheringham – Cromer Road (working with Sheringham Playpark Revamp Appeal - £20,000 with the possibility of contributing up to a further £22,000 towards their scheme).
Improved signage will also be provided for 20 other sites across the district.

STEAM STRAIGHT TO SANTAOnce again, Santa Claus is setting up his Enchanted Grotto at Weybourne Station. Which, of course, means that the best way to meet him is to take aPoppy Line Santa Special steam train from Sheringham direct to the Grotto.

NEW PRICEREAR VIEW
Over the weekend of 19 and 20 October members of the Bittern DX Group were withthe Scouts of Roughton 1st Rural HQ to takepart in the 56th Jamboree on the Air. This is anannual event in which half a million Scouts and
Guides all over theworld make contactwith each other bymeans of amateurradio.
The use of amateurradio means that many Scouts get theopportunity to discoverthe skills of radio operating techniquesand electronics. JOTAis also the only eventthat offers each individual Scout the opportunity to speak toother Scouts across the world.
In total there was 36 Scouts of various typesfrom Buxton, Gorleston and of courseRoughton groups for a weekend of activities at their Windmill headquarters. The boys andgirls had plenty to keep them busy witharchery, rifle shooting and abseiling etc. available along with the amateur radio aspectprovided by BDXG members. Antennas wereerected from the top of the old Windmill’stower and using the SES callsign of GB5FRRcontacts were made as far afield as Australia! The object of the weekend however was notjust the radio - it was to enable those Scouts interested to gain both their Communicationsand Electronics badges. BDXG members
divided themselvesinto two groups toconcentrate on eachaspect and by endof the weekend therewere four successfulcandidates achievingeach badge requirements.
Group chairmanStephen CordnerM0HET, ably assisted by AlecAdams G3YOA and Jim WhitesideM0HPJ mainly concentrated on theElectronics badge
aspect. In this they taught the candidates soldering techniques and how to recognise various components, as well as the building ofavailable kits plus learning how to measurevoltage within the circuit. The other groupcomprising principally of Steve BaldingG7VRK and Paul Bean M6NEC concentratedthemselves on providing the aspects for theCommunication badge. This requires learninghow to use the radio and make contact via the airwaves, as well as listening to and thelogging of callsigns plus understanding basicpropagation information.
It was an interesting and successful weekendfor BDXG members and all candidates werepresented with their badges after lunch on theSunday before they all left camp. We hope verymuch to be involved with the Scouts more in2014 as the members enjoy it as much as theyoungsters taking part in the activities at theweekend. Even our member Jim took thechance to abseil down the tower - we can’thave the Scouts having all the fun!!
Involvement with the Scouts and teaching is one of the many aspects of amateur radio undertaken by the Bittern DX Group, if youwould like to know more about the hobby, getting started etc. or just about the group itself. Please contact them via the group’s website www.bittern-dxers.org.uk or the Secretary Linda Leavold G0AJJ on 01692218592 in the evenings or weekends for further information and future events.

Some people think that to own a shady garden is a matter for sympathybut the famous gardenwriter, Margery Fish, feelsthat it is one for envy. Shewrites that ‘anyone with a garden without shadeknows how difficult it isto grow many plants, foryou cannot make shadeovernight, but it is usuallypossible to contrive sunny
spots in the shadiest gardens.’
She states that ‘If I had to choose between asunny and a shady garden I would choose theshady one every time, not only for its peace andtimelessness but also for the plants that can begrown in it. It seems to me that they are oftenmore interesting and more beautiful than thosethat like to bask in the sun.’
If the whole garden can be seen at once there isa tendency to pay less attention to its treasuresthan if they are discovered in shady unexpectedplaces under trees, behind walls and round corners. This was brought home to me on a recent guided walk around some of the historicgardens in the City of London close to St Paul’sCathedral.
It is hard to imagine a more hostile situation for
gardens than in a city, surrounded by high risebuildings which create deep shade and reducethe rain falling on the soil and with winds thatfunnel from the River Thames and batter thetrees and shrubs. Nevertheless we saw a widevariety of plants that seemed to thrive and produced little areas to calm the city workersand residents and act as refuges for wildlife. As well as the usual plants that enjoy or surviveshade such as ivies, ferns, hostas, hellebores andperhaps surprisingly hydrangeas we saw exotictrees such as a Tulip Tree, a Weeping Mulberry,a Persian Ironwood and Ginkgos. Mixed withsome variegated shrubs and under planted withbulbs they produce a wonderful garden effect.
The first garden we visited was the Cleary Garden in Queen Victoria Street. This garden isnamed after Fred Cleary, who, during the 1970swas instrumental in encouraging the planting of trees and the creation of new gardensthroughout the square mile. During the Blitz, the house which once stood here was destroyedexposing the cellars. A shoemaker called JoeBrandis decided that he would create a gardenfrom the rubble, collecting mud from the riverbanks and transporting soil from his own gardenin Walthamstow to the site. In the garden is abed of Yatsuka Tree Peonies sent from Japan asa symbol of goodwill in 2006.
The next garden on the route was WhittingtonGardens named in honour of one of the City’s
best known Lord Mayors who was buried in thenearby church of St Michael Paternoster Royalin 1423. Here Rosemary and Thyme can befound amongst the dense planting in this garden.
In Monument Street, there is a lovely garden atSt Dunstan-in-the –East. The original medievalchurch was damaged in the Great Fire of London but was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in 1697 only to be damaged again in theBlitz. Now the ruins of the walls and windowsare beautifully draped with ornamental vines. In the garden grows the pineapple scented Moroccan broom and the Japanese Snowball,Viburnum plicatum.
However the memory that lingers from the walkis not necessarily the plants but also the hardlandscaping within the gardens, the paving andgravel, the large planters, generous seating andthe statuary. The most impressive statue was oneof the ‘Barge Master and Swan Upper’ in asmall garden in front of St. James GarlickhytheChurch and opposite the Vintner’s Hall in UpperThames Street which commemorates the LiveryCompany’s right to share with the Queen theownership of swans on the river.

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to announce that, thanks to a generous grant of £10,450 from the NorthNorfolk District Council Big Society Fund, their World War One Centenary commemoration project is now fully funded.
The Choral Society has commissioned therenowned composer Patrick Hawes to write a new large scale choral workto commemorate the outbreak of theFirst World War in 2014. The world premiere performance will take placein Norwich Cathedral on Saturday 12July 2014 as part of the First WorldWar Centenary Partnership, led byIWM (Imperial War Museums). Priorto that Patrick will deliver a workshopat the Auden Theatre on 17 May 2014,open to both children and adults, totalk about the art of composing andshare some of the music prior to itsfirst formal performance. The BSFgrant will make it possible for the choirto offer more than 100 free places tolocal school children. Later in the year a local premiere will take place on Saturday8 November 2014 in St Peter’s Church Sheringham.
This WW1 Centenary Remembrance Concert will be an important and significant
commemoration event for north Norfolk andthe Choral Society is hugely appreciative of the acknowledgement and support of NorthNorfolk District Council.
Patrick Hawes recently visited the 100-strongcommunity choir during a rehearsal to talkabout how his composition is progressing.
His brother, a priest and poet, Canon AndrewHawes, has written the libretto which is basedon the life and faith of Norfolk’s WW1 heroine, nurse Edith Cavell, who was executedin Belgium in 1915. Patrick is now well advanced with the composition process and he explained that the work will contain extracts
from Edith’s final letter to “her nurses” and from sacred texts that she knew in depth,as well as first hand accounts of her final days. The premiere performance will be accompanied by the English Chamber Orchestra with soprano soloist Elin ManahanThomas and a children’s choir made up fromstudents attending Gresham’s International
Britten Music Course 2014.
Musical Director for the choir and Director of the International BrittenMusic Course at Gresham’s, NathanWaring said, "I am enormously gratefulto all donor organisations who havecontributed thus far to this project, including grants for the arts from ArtsCouncil England and North NorfolkBig Society Fund. Their support andinvolvement in this project has enabledus to move forwards in the preparationof these unique musical events to markthe centenary of WW1. We look forward to working closely withPatrick Hawes as he continues to com-
pose this major new choral work in this excit-ing collaboration between Sheringham &Cromer Choral Society, the English ChamberOrchestra, the International Britten MusicCourse at Gresham's, and of course our soloist,Elin Manahan Thomas".

Sheringham Society CoffeeMorningThe Society enjoyed a most amusing and interesting talk by RobertSmith, the Harbour Master at Wells. He told us several very funny incidents that had happened during his 24 years as Harbour Master andalso told us about the history of the port and surrounding area. In fact, the original harbour was up by the church which shows how much thecoastline has changed over the years.
Our next talk will be on Thursday, 28 November, 10.15am for 10.30am,when our speaker will be Carol Adkinson who will be enlightening uson the art of bobbin lace-making.
As usual, the talk will be held at St. Joseph's Church Hall, admission is£3 to include tea or coffee and homemade cakes and everybody is verywelcome, whether a member of the Society or not.

Sanders commented “Athletes came from asfar afield as Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouthand everyone enjoyed a fantastic day of activity, trying out sports and talking tocoaches about training”.
“A number of volunteers, including representatives from UEA, Swardeston Cricket Club, Bawburgh Driving Range,
Norfolk CricketBoard, Easton FamilyGolf Centre, SewellPark Centre BocciaClub, Easton College Disability Tennis hub, Bungay CycleSchool and Norfolk
Snowsports Club were present to offer the athletes a chance to see the sports in action, try their hand, and provide information whererequested.
“The support of Waitrose and their team of volunteers also played a big part in making
the day an overwhelming success. This event will only enhance the profile of Special Olympics in thecounty, and helps those who providecare to see the scope for sport to play a significant role in personal development, and social inclusion.
“Wherever a mainstream club orleisure facility works with us, there is the opportunity for an athlete whoshows promise, to train with otherswho have ability.
“On behalf of Special Olympics Norfolk I would like to thank all of the volunteers and coaches who
donated their time and of course all of the athletes who left at the end of the day with a big smile on their faces,” added Richard.

People living in North Norfolkhave been given extra time to signup for an energy scheme that couldhelp cut their gas and electricitybills.North Norfolk’s Big Switch and Save schemehas been extended until 18 November, meaningpeople now have another month to join.
The first round of the scheme was launched inNorth Norfolk in March this year, with 2796households in the area registering. 70% ofhouseholds providing realistic energy usagefigures were able to save, 46% were able to
save more than £50 a year and 23% up to £50 a year. Those households able to save throughthe scheme achieved an overall average annualsaving of £126, with the highest average annual saving of £266 for ‘dual fuel’ customersopting for online billing.
It is hoped that a new Collective SwitchingTariff will be available in time for the energyauction and that this will result in a better offerfor customers switching supplier in this way. Anyone who missed out on the first round orwho thinks they could make even more savingson their gas or electricity bills, is now able toregister for a second round of the Big Switchand Save scheme, and the deadline for signing
up has been extended to 18 November.
NNDC Cabinet Member for EnvironmentalServices, John Lee, said “We all know thatgas and electricity costs are soaring and energy switching is one way individual
households can reduce those costs. NNDC is delighted to be able to offer a second opportunity for people in North Norfolk to register for the Big Switch and Save. Our experience in the first round of the schemeshows that it really can help people cut theirenergy costs in these difficult times.”
Residents can register through the Big Switch and Save website www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk. All you need is a bill or a statement from yourenergy supplier which includes the energy youused last year or your estimated usage for theyear ahead. Registering is quick and easy andup to five households can be registered from asingle email address so you can help family, friends and neighbours to register if they do nothave their own internet access. A helpline isavailable on 0800 0488285.

Lee Grandjean exhibits atTheatre in the Woods, HoltThe Theatre in the Woods at Gresham’s Senior School in Holt will betransformed in November with an ambitious exhibition of sculpture byLee Grandjean. The project Weights and Measures is the first of its kindto be held at the school.
Large scale hybrid figures created out of junk and their attendant lug-gage will emerge out of the wooded landscape to evoke elements of theatre and elicit a dialogue between the sculpted forms and the space. The exhibition is free for visitors and open between 10am and 4pm daily(except Sunday) from 8th and 29th November 2013.
This is the first event of its kind to take place in this space and will be a unique opportunity to see this work presented in a wonderfully atmospheric way. Lee Grandjean’s drawings will also be on show in the Nicholson Gallery for the duration of the exhibition.
Further details about this artist can be found on his website at www.leegrandjean.co.uk

Buckaroo, the little kitten featured last time, has now been re-homed.Several other cats and kittens have also been chosen and we were particularly delighted that Matilda and Hester, two lovely black andwhite girls, were among them. As Matilda does not like other cats andHester is quite shy, they had been overlooked, but both have settled intheir new homes and are enjoying home comforts once again.
At this time of the year Stephanie gets lots of calls from people whohave been feeding a stray cat, sometimes for several months. As winterapproaches, they are concerned because the cat is outside and ring to askif we can take it into care. Although we do try to give priority to strayswe, more often than not, do not have space available. Our pens are onlyempty for a very short time between cats, just long enough for our fosterers to give them a complete clean and change all bedding etc. We will put the cats on the waiting list and they are taken in when a pen becomes available. Recently, a cat which was on the list, but not at the
top of it, was taken tothe vets to be neuteredand left there for us to collect. Horatio, thecat in question, nowin residence in Hester’s pen, is not very old and probably strayed from his home searching for females because he had not beenneutered. He will be held for two weeks, just in case there is an ownerout there waiting to claim him, before being put up for adoption. As aconsequence, however, the cat that was about to be offered a space, andhad been on the list for some time, is still out there waiting for anotherpen to become available.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858.Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the
above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see ifyou are eligible for a voucher).

It’s that time again when the Blickling Estate plays host to some traditional Christmas fayre over the firstthree weekends of December.
Come and be welcomed bycharacters from the past intothis wonderful Jacobean house, beautifully decorated for thefestive season, and be temptedby an array of exclusive giftideas, mostly produced by localcraftspeople.
Have you ever wondered howpast residents of Blicklingwould have celebrated Christmas? Well this yearyou’ll be able to get a real taste. Blickling’scostumed interpretation group, the “Diggers”will be re-enacting Christmas through the ages, giving visitors a feel of what it would havebeen like in Jacobean times, when Henry Hobart restored the medieval and Tudor manor;in Georgian times, when the second Earl ofBuckinghamshire redesigned the house; and inQueen Victoria’s reign when Lady Constancemade the parterre garden.
The atmosphere of the 1930s will also be depicted, when the house was owned by LordLothian. Characters from this era will be in thegreat hall, greeting and talking with visitors;the Victorians will be in the brown drawing
room; the Georgians in the dining room and theJacobeans in the Long Gallery- all in costume
and talking about Christmas foods, decorationsand customs from the four specific eras, givingvisitors a life-like experience of the house atChristmas and illustrating how customs variedas time went by.
Designed for all ages, the characters will makevisitors feel festive and welcome and, in eachof the rooms they occupy, the decorations andfloral arrangements will also be appropriatelythemed.
After wandering through the house you will bedrawn in by the welcoming aroma of mulledwine and mince pies in the “Christmas courtyard”, where there will be a marquee
full of Christmas gift ideas as well as festivesnacks and drinks.
Christmas trees, wreaths andgreenery will also be on salealong with garden gifts, hotchestnuts and other seasonaldelights. Father Christmas willbe in his grotto each day totake those all important ordersand there will be traditionalChristmas lunches served in adecorated Lord Lothian’s studyor less formally, in Hobart’scafe on demand. The air will befull of festive cheer, with musicand carols to ensure that you
leave, touched by the spirit of Christmas.
Over the weekends 30 November-1 December,7-8 December, the marquee in the “Christmascourtyard” will be brimming with Christmascrafts and gifts – a stunning selection of not-on-the-high-street gift ideas to suit alltastes and pockets. On the final weekend, 14-15 December, the marquee will be adornedwith “festive food” – including a fabulous selection of delicious local fayre.
Doors open 11am-5pm and access to theChristmas Courtyard, the shop and restaurant is free to all. Entry to the house and gardenswill be free for National Trust members, withusual admission fees for non-members.

North Norfolk District Council(NNDC) has launched a communitydog warden scheme to crack down ondog fouling across the district and isappealing for volunteers to sign up.Dog fouling is a huge concern for residents, not just because of the mess, but because itposes health risks that can cause stomachupset, sore throat, asthma and in extreme cases it can cause blindness.
NNDC figures show that historically, the number of complaints it receives about dogfouling increases as the evenings start to drawin. With plans to re-launch its ‘No Messing’anti dog-fouling campaign, NNDC hopes thatboth the campaign and the introduction ofcommunity dog wardens will assure residentsthat reducing the presence of dog fouling inpublic places is a priority.
The role of a community dog warden is to educate irresponsible dog owners that dog
fouling is not acceptable, and together withsupport from NNDC’s Environmental Protection team, to promote the virtues of responsible dog ownership.
John Lee, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment said “When the clocks go backand the nights start to draw in, this is when westart to see a steady increase in complaints ofdog fouling. Dog owners need to understandthat they are posing a risk to the safety of others if they do not clear up after their dogs, and using the cover of darkness is just not acceptable. As a community dog warden, youwill be a valuable part of your community and will be given the full support of NNDC’s Environmental Protection officers to help educate people on how we can make our localenvironment and community a cleaner place.”
Volunteers wishing to become a communitydog warden will need to be friendly, open andwilling to help make a difference. It is a non-confrontational role, and wardens will not havethe power to issue fixed penalty notices.
Volunteers can offer to work whenever they arefree to give up their time, although patrols arenot expected to last more than three hours at atime.
Each warden can expect to receive full trainingand will be provided with a high visibilityjacket and a pocket notebook.
Mr Lee added ‘Although community dog wardens will not be able to issue fixed penalty notices, they will be providing regular information to NNDC’s enforcement officers.Irresponsible dog owners should be clear thatwe will not tolerate dog fouling in North Norfolk and we’ll have no hesitation in finingoffenders.’

North Norfolk District Council seeks volunteersfor new community dog warden scheme
Sheringham Independent 380 November 16th 2013 23
Coastal Singers was born out of the Cley Amateur Dramatic Society, otherwise knownas CADS. CADS started up in 1983 and with a double bill Trial by Jury and Wine Womenand Song. Since then, it has put on shows inCley village hall every year to appreciative audiences. In recent years CADS has concentrated on presenting a yearly pantomimein February. In the last few years shows, scripted by Sheila Rudgely, have had engagingly unusual titles like Mother Hubbardand the King’s Pantaloons (2013) and the 2014show, now in preparation, will be Aladdin andthe Gels of St. Trinians.
With titles like that, the shows have had a wacky story line that gives plenty of opportunity for the diverse cast to show theirmettle. CADS inclusive policy has always beento let anyone who wants to ‘have a go’, do justthat. As a consequence, CADS has attracted awide range of ages to its cast from pre-teens upto people who would rather not disclose the extent of their seniority!
Since Elisabeth Rooke took over as CADS musical director in 2009, the shows have had a very strong musical element to them withnearly a dozen songs in each pantomime. Therepertoire has been so varied and was delivered
with such enthusiasmand gusto that Elisabeth was inspired to suggestthat CADS shouldcontinue with itssinging in the ‘closedseason’ after the pantomime was over. Thus was bornCADSingers with a core of CADSmembers at its centre.
CADSingers, in conjunction with the North NorfolkConcert Band (run by
Elisabeth’s husband, Howard) has put on seasonal concerts in churches up and down thenorth Norfolk coast and sung at weddings andvarious village events. The success of these hasattracted a significant new membership beyondthe scope of the CADS cast so that the choirhas grown to between thirty and forty performers. It was thus decided thatCADSingers was no longer an accurate title for the group. After many suggestions wereflagged up, it was decided that Coastal Singerswould be an engaging and accurate descriptionof the current group. However, the historicalconnection to CADS will always be there andwith about fifteen members with strong CADS’connections in Coastal Singers, that link willnot be forgotten.
John Roebuck, Chairman of CADS
At the present time, Coastal Singers are rehearsing carols for their Christmas Concertunder their musical director, Elisabeth Rooke. The concert, which also will feature the NorthNorfolk Concert Band under the direction of Howard Rooke, will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 7th December at St Andrew’s Church, Holt commencing at 3pm.Festive refreshments will be available, andthere will be a retiring collection to be dividedbetween the choir, band and a local charity.Coastal Singers are keen to welcome newmembers, especially tenors. Rehearsals areheld on Tuesday evenings, usually at the Harbour Rooms in Blakeney. For further details please contact Elisabeth Rooke on01263 740993.
Kelling Probus ClubChairman John Dunsire welcomed 22 Probus members to the meeting atThe Dales on 17 October. After lunch he introduced our speaker RobSpray whose talk about the Cromer Ridge was illustrated with amazingphotographs he had taken while diving off our local North Norfolkcoastline.
Members were aware of the Cromer Ridge - a 20 mile long reef submerged 25 feet below the water, and Rob told how he, working with Dawn Watson, a biologist, had explored and photographed the biodiversity they discovered.
The summer temperature of the sea off our coast is 10 degrees F higherthan that off the coast of Cornwall or the Scilly Isles, and this supportsover one hundred species of seaweed and millions of "shore crabs" (not usually eaten), hiding in chalk gulleys together with lobsters andcarnivorous slugs.
Near to Sheringham it is possible to go diving from the shore, a cheaperand easy way to "get a taste of this sub-water world".
Rob's team trains divers and he hopes that more people will appreciatethis local wonderland, which includes some species previously notknown to exist in UK.
Rob spoke of the work of The Marine Conservation Zones in protectingthis special area and mentioned the website www.seasearcheast.org.uk .Sam Knowles thanked Rob for answering several questions after suchan interesting talk and wonderful photographs.
The Chairman gave details of the Christmas lunch to be held at Sheringham Golf Club on 19 December and Ken Murray (01263821060) said there were still a few places on the coach to The ImperialWar Museum at Duxford on 13 November.
David North of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust will be our speaker at themeeting at The Dales on Thursday 21 November. Kevin Clingo (01263824624) would like to hear from anyone interested in joining us on thatday.

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Cabinet was set to approve a report at its meeting at the beginning of this month proposing that the council grant the equivalentof £50,000 to Sheringham Fisherman’s Association (SFA) as match funding for a project to refurbish the west gangway and associated facilities in the town.
NNDC is set to provide £40,000 funding plus afurther £10,000 in kind (officer time and othercommercial costs), a total of 40% of the likelytotal cost of £125,000, which will enable theSFA to apply for the balance of the fundingfrom the European Fisheries Fund (EFF),under the North Norfolk Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) scheme.
Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, said “The councilhas put a great deal of time, effort and moneyinto supporting the communities and the peoplewho live and work on our wonderful coast. This is an excellent scheme that will help toensure that fishing remains at the heart of theall that is good about Sheringham. It builds onthe work we have previously done to assist thefishing communities of Wells and Cromer, to
protect and boost jobs and to build the economy.
Russell Wright, NNDC Cabinet Member forEconomic Development and Tourism, said“North Norfolk’s fishing industry is importantnot just for the fishermen and their families;fishing is part of our whole culture and fishingis one of the key features of our tourist industryupon which so manymore people dependfor their livelihoods;we ignore it at ourperil. I am delightedto support this important project.”
The SFA currentlyhas 15 fee payingmembers whoseboats work from thewest gangway andwho pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the associated gear, such as winches andcables. They have put
together the project to repair and improve thecurrent gangway, which is deteriorating owingto penetration from underground springs, andthe associated facilities required for launch andretrieve and boats. The project will cost a totalof around £125,000.

Council officer graduates with merit Andrew McCloud, Assistant Coastal Engineer withNorth Norfolk District Council, was awarded a Foundation Degree in Civil Engineering (with merit)from University Campus Suffolk at a graduation ceremony at the end of October.Andrew joined NNDC as Assistant Coastal Engineer in February 2013after working as a Technician Engineer at Waveney District Councilfrom leaving school. Both councils have supported him in his studiesand now, with further NNDC support and encouragement, his aim, following two more year’s part time study, is to achieve an honours degree.
Andrew said “It’s been hard work getting this far, but I really enjoy my job and I relish the opportunity to study engineering further. Working as a coastal engineer, trying to balance what’s physically possible alongside what’s allowable in such an ever-changing and environmentally sensitive environment is a huge challenge, and that iswhat makes my role so interesting. I am really thankful to both Waveneyand North Norfolk District Councils for all the support they’ve given tohelp me get this far.
As well as achieving his Foundation Degree, Andrew has been nominated by his course leader for the Institution of Civil Engineers(ICE) ‘Best Student’ regional and national awards. Each university isallowed to submit one nomination each year, and the results should beavailable at the end of November. And Andrew is also continuing towork with two of his tutors on one of his last year’s assignments with a view to submitting it for publication in the ICE Proceedings MaritimeEngineering Journal.
NNDC Cabinet Member for the Coast, AngieFitch-Tillett, said “We were delighted to welcomeAndrew into our Coastal Team earlier this year. He has already made his mark by initiating somesuccessful projects and gave an excellent presentation at our Summer Coastal Forum. I am extremely proud of his success in gaining his degree and delighted that he is in the mix foroutstanding student of the year.”
NNDC Chief Executive, Sheila Oxtoby, said “This council has a very high reputation nationallyfor the quality of its coastal management and expertise, and we are keen to ensure that remainsthe case. Having knowledgeable, well-qualifiedand committed staff is obviously important in that, and we are delighted that our support for Andrewas well as his hard work has been so well rewarded. He deserves every credit for the efforthe has put in and which, I am sure, he will continue to put into his studies and his work in our excellent coastal team on behalf of North Norfolk coastal communities.”

Dear Margaret,Although totally agreeing with Richard May (Sheringham Independent 2 November) I would like to ask how much would they have saved and how much safer would the pedestrianshave been if Station Road and High Street had been pedestrianized. It’s not impossible, and the precedent as alreadybeen set, these roads are closed at least 5 days a year for the PottyMorris Festival, Carnival and Christmas lights. The Councilcould start by closing them just for Saturdays and then expand onthis as time goes on. Retractable or removable bollards would havebeen a lot cheaper to install than these none crossing crossingsthat do not comply with any road traffic act.

Mozart and Bach forCromer Christmas ConcertThe popular Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society returnto Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 14 December at7.30pm for their Christmas concert. Directed by Nathan Waring the 100 strong choir will be joined by the SCCS Chamber Orchestra for what promises to be an exciting performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem.
The soloists will be: Jane May-Sysum, Soprano; Freya Jacklin, Alto;Paul Smy, Tenor and Andrew Weeks, Bass.
Mozart left his stunning Requiem unfinished when he died in 1791. Itwas completed by Franz Xaver Sussmayer and remains a significantpiece in the choral music repertoire.
The concert will also include Johan Sebastian Bach’s charming adventCantata Sleepers, Wake! as well as Christmas carols and an opportunityfor audience participation!
Seasonal refreshments will be available in the interval.
Tickets £12 (£15 on the door) are available from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office 01263 822347 or from K Hardware, Cromer.

Dear Margaret,I totally agree with Richard May (The Sheringham Independent issue 379) - Sheringham town centre has not got laws of its own, the Highway Code does not say that anyTom Dick or Harry can just do what they think and that goes forNorfolk County Council and its band of councillors.
They could have spent that money on many things that needdoing, like keeping the hedge trimmed where they said they wasgoing to do it (Sheringham Tesco’s Community Centre Access)ref drawing no PR3366-MP-017C which was sent to me dated 17 November 2011 from Mike Auger his reference HI/MP/PR3366/MA. On this plan it shows, ‘existing hedge to be cut backwith future maintenance to be undertaken by Norfolk CountyCouncil’s heritage and landscape team’ (never done) the whole ofthat area has been left in a total mess with stones laying about so the grass that was there is in a mess and areas of grass left unseeded. Lids to drains have been left below surface so will beextra work by hand, costing more of our money.
This looks like someone is giving out contracts for unnecessarywork and if someone gets knocked down it will not be the driverwho is to blame nor the person knocked down but the person responsible for allowing this to be done in Norfolk County Council.
