A Perfect Day for a Classic Country Drive The annual St Geroge’s Day ‘Drive it Day’, organised by the North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club, set off just after 10 am in bright sunshine and virtually no wind on Sunday April 21st. Near perfect conditions could mean a record number of entries, something over 250 Classic Vehicles all raising money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, hoping to exceed last year’s £3000. They use Station Car Park as it is by far the largest car park in North Norfolk. There is a choice of two routes of about 45 miles for the drivers, both wending their way to the beautiful park setting of Hoveton Hall Gardens near Wroxham. All the cars, trucks, bikes were waved on their way to Hoveton Hall by Mayor of Sheringham Cllr Doug Smith and Sheringham’s own Town Crier Tony Nelson. 3rd April was the 100th anniversary of the birthof Peter Coke, actor and playwright, famousfor his role as Paul Temple in the popular vintage radio series. Peter took the Victorianart of shell craft to new heights of inventiveness, sophistication and variety. Almost 200 of his stunning shell sculptures, made from shells from all over the world, areon display in the Shell Gallery on West Cliff in Sheringham which bears his name.

Peter Coke started to collect antiques at an early age. Later, in his antique shop in Sharrington Hall, near Holt, he had a numberof Sailor Valentines, eight-sided arrangementsof shells which 18th century sailors were saidto have made on the return journey from theWest Indies for their wives and girlfriends backhome (though often they bought them readymade). During visits to friends in Barbados hewas able to collect shells to repair exampleswhich were damaged, and from this he progressed to making reproductions of

Sailor Valentines. This led to a fascination with the amazing variety of shapes and coloursin which seashells, especially from tropical waters, are found.

Having collected shells as a hobby for manyyears, and having experimented with variousways of using them decoratively, he spent increasing amounts of his time in this activityuntil, in his early 80s, he was persuaded byfriends to mount the first of what became a series of exhibitions of his work in London. These were a great success, with about half thepieces on display usually being sold at pricesfar greater than he had originally imagined. Hiswork has been purchased by many well-knowncustomers in the arts and entertainments worldand by members of the royal family. Eventually, he turned his antiques showroominto a shell-art gallery and devoted all his time to his art. He continued working daily on his shell sculptures until just before his death in July 2008 at the age of

95.The quantity and variety of his output is amazing.

His work ranges from two-dimensionalgeometric arrangements, such as theSailor Valentines ,to shell pictures in theChinese style, to shell encrusted boxes, obelisks and figures and finely detailedmodel garden scenes in three dimensions. All the colours are natural – unlike manyVictorian predecessors he did not artificially colour his shells.

Shell artistry is an unusualart-form andthere are currently very few practitioners of this art-formin Britain, though some are to be found in the UnitedStates, and it will probably become increasingly rare as time progresses, partly because of difficulties in sourcing the shells.

Before his death, Peter Coke had hoped forsome time that, instead of being dispersed to collectors, a substantial body of work representing the range of his output would beavailable for the public to see. After spendingtwo years searching for a venue which waslarge enough to house the collection, the opportunity arose to base it in part of the former longshore fishermen’s sheds at Westcliff, Sheringham, restored by SheringhamPreservation Society and approximately 12 miles from his home.

Most of Peter’s collection is permanently ondisplay, with some variation from year to year. The Gallery is open from 12 to 4pm each day(subject to volunteer availability) from 4 Mayto 30 September (and the school Easter andAutumn half term holidays).

Admission is free

THE JUBILEE PLAYERS - CALENDAR GIRLSThe all female cast members of our summer production are hoping that theweather will warm up by June, when they will be performing ‘Calendar Girls’ byTim Firth, at The Tithe Barn in Horstead. The play is based on the true story of eleven WI members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund. When Annie’shusband, John, dies of Leukaemia, she and best friend, Chris resolve to raisemoney for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four other WI members to pose nude with them and news of thewomen’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire. The calendar is a huge success but the new found fame has unexpected consequences for the women involved.Based on the film released in 2003, ‘Calendar Girls’ became the fastest sellingplay in British theatre history when it was first performed in 2008. The amateurperforming rights have now been released for a limited period and will raise further funds for The Leukaemia Research Fund. The Jubilee Players are delighted to be one of the amateur groups granted thelicense to perform and hope you will join us for an evening guaranteed to makeyou laugh, cry and come out singing ‘Jerusalem’! HANDYMAN

Sheringham Society Coffee MorningsOur last coffee morning in St. John Hall was an intriguing talk on the history of magic byBischop Peter Fox, a former Bishop of Samoa. He told us all about the history of magic throughthe ages and gave some extremely clever examples. It was a most entertaining morning.

From now on the coffee mornings will be on the last Thursday of the month as usual but in St.Joseph's Church Hall in the Cromer Road. The next talk will be by Barry Walker Moore, a beekeeper who will be telling us all about bee keeping and has promised to bring along somebees. This is, of course, a most important time for bees with many people trying to persuadethe Government to ban certain pesticides which appear to be very harmful to bees.

There is plenty of parking for people behind the hall. Doors open at 10.15am and the talksbegin at 10.30am. As usual, admission is £2 which includes tea or coffee and home-madecakes. All are welcome, so please do come along. You may learn quite a lot.

SheringhamShantymento manageOddfellows HallSheringham’s Oddfellows Hall is to be run bythe Sheringham Shantymen over the summer, asthey take on a temporary licence of the historic property from its owners, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC).

Oddfellows Hall, which was built in 1867 andlooks out over Lifeboat Plain in Sheringham, has a long association with the sea, serving asthe first RNLI station for the town and as a meeting place for fishermen. Following problems with the slip-way the lifeboat stationmoved in 1901 and the hall became associatedwith the Independent Order of Oddfellows,a benevolent charity that provided an earlyform of medical insurance for residents, including members of the local fishing community, before the creation of the NationalHealth Service. Bought by the Oddfellows in1931, they sold it in 1947 and from 1948 to1960 it was used as a shoe factory, after whichit was purchased by Sheringham Urban DistrictCouncil.

Ownership of the hallpassed from SheringhamRDC to NNDC in the1974 local governmentreforms. SheringhamPlus were granted a 99year lease on a pepper-corn rent by NNDC in2007, and they refur-bished the hall in 2009 as part of the Shering-ham regeneration programme of works.More recently it wasmanaged by the UpcherPartnership, who handedit back to NNDC lastmonth.

NNDC has now agreed to grant a short-term licence to the Sheringham Shantymen, who approached the council with a proposal to manage the hall for the benefit of the widercommunity of Sheringham. They plan to makethe hall available for meetings, performancesand other community uses over the summer, and at the same time by running the hall theywill be restoring its original link with the localseafaring community.

Brian Farrow, Musical Director of the Sheringham Shantymen, who were founded in

1990 and maintain avery close connectionwith the RNLI, said,“We are really pleasedand honoured to begiven the responsibility of looking after this historic building, especially given itsclose associations withfishing and the RNLI.We hope that local peo-ple will make use of the excellent fa-

cilities that are available in the hall as we wantit to be a real hub of community activity. We’llsee what we can achieve over the summer. Iwould particularly like to thank our local dis-trict councillors, Rhodri Oliver and Brian Hannah, as well as theUpcher Community Partnership and NorthNorfolk District Council who all worked reallyhard to make this possible.”

Fencers from Gresham’s took part inthe recent Public Schools’ FencingChampionship, which attracts entrantsfrom schools throughout the BritishIsles, including a number who havenational representative honours. Many schools, such as Millfield and Shrewsbury, have fencing clubs with forty or more participants and a long tradition ofdominating this event. Therefore, it was abrave decision after only two terms of fencingat Gresham’s to send participants, bearing inmind the very real possibility of a whitewash.

In reality, nothing could have been further from the truth. Clare Mawson from MeltonConstable in Norfolk, making her first forayinto any form of competitive fencing, took partin the tough Senior Girls’ Foil Competition. She fought with grit and determination avoiding the first round of elimination todemonstrate a cool head when dealing with opponents with much more experience. Shewas, unfortunately, knocked out in the firstround of the direct elimination section of theevent, but not before giving her, highly seeded, opponent a great deal to think about. Sheshould be delighted with her final placing of28th in a total entry of 39.

The following day saw Olivier Johnson fromSalthouse in Norfolk and Johnny Willcox fromHeydon in Norfolk participate in the Mount-Haes foil competition, the youngest age category available. Short of recent trainingtime both wobbled a little in their initial poulefights, but avoided elimination in the first cut.In his second poule Olivier fought cleverly and turned his slight build to an advantage, providing many of

his opponents with difficulties. He was only asingle victory away from the next stage butcould not quite grasp the points he needed, andthis led to his elimination. Again, he can bepleased with his final placing 79th in a totalentry of 114. Johnny fared less well in his sec-ond poule, lacking some fine technique to press

home the advantage, although he again shouldbe encouraged by a final placing of 87th of afield of 114.

On the same day Humphrey Ho, the quiet manof the group, tackled the Junior Foil event. Thefoil is not Humphrey’s favoured weapon but heseemed to enjoy making short work of many of his opponents in his first and second poule

rounds, easily qualifying for the knock-out section of the competition. He automaticallyearned a place in the last thirty-two of theevent, thanks to his numerous victories earlierand his first opponent seemed to be unable toread Humphrey’s attacks, leading to a 15-7 victory. This saw Humphrey through to the last16, where his next opponent proved to be atougher nut to crack. Using a more physicalstyle than Humphrey he made greater staminatell, allowing him to defeat the Greshamian 15-9. Nevertheless, Humphrey’s final placingof 15th from a field of 119 is highly creditable. After a long journey back to Holt from CrystalPalace that evening, and another early morningon Thursday Humphrey was again in fine formfor the Junior Sabre, his favoured weapon.Again, victory in most of the poule matchesappeared easy and he went through to theknock out stages. An early draw against thesixth seeded fencer saw Humphrey upset theodds with a convincing victory, which saw himthrough to the final 16. His next opponent wasskilled, but unfortunately not skilled enough, and Humphrey won through to the final 8.However, his next opponent had fenced at international level and in a nail-biting fightHumphrey was defeated 15-13, which saw himexit. At the time of writing his placing is notcertain, but he will be at least eighth in an entryof 75.

Mr Hall, Fencing coordinator at Gresham’swould like to thank all fencers involved fortheir hard work and willingness to travel a longdistance, and Mr Stimpson for his excellentcoaching thus far this year. The coming termswill, without doubt, see fencing at Gresham’sgo from strength to strength.

As part of the Sheringham Community fund,Tesco is giving a grant to Cruse BereavementCare in Norwich. The grant will allow Cruse tocontinue providing counselling and supportservices to adults and children dealing with theloss of a loved one. The money will be used totrain more volunteers as counsellors.

Cruse Bereavement provides support in a range of ways from a telephone helpline to one to one free home visits. Last year Cruse provided 1183 free one to one counselling sessions and answered 623 phonecalls. Many individuals are referred to Cruseby their GPs. However, many have also heardabout Cruse from their friends or come across

the service on the internet.

Linda Jeckells, who received support fromCruse, had this to say “The grief hit me like aton of weight when I lost my father in 2010. I couldn’t think straight or work. Cruse helpedme turn the corner and I don’t know what I would have done without them.”

People like Linda have been helped by a teamof dedicated volunteers like Ann Barnard. The enthusiasm for the services Cruse providesis also reflected in its dedicated team of volunteers.

Ann Barnard, a former nurse, drives hundredsof miles to carry out assessments and

North Walshamand District Branch of Cats Protection

While pregnant mums and mums with kittens are in our care, we givethem extra attention. It is important to make sure that the mother cat receives additional food both while pregnant and once the kittens areborn, so that she has sufficient milk to feed the kittens to ensure they are healthy and will thrive. As a general rule we are guided by themother cat as to how much food she needs.

When a pregnant cat comes into care, we always check for fleas andworms and the ideal time to treat her is before she has her kittens. However it is important that we use the correct products as some shouldnot be used and our vets recommend those which are suitable. Becauseworms are passed to the kittens via the mother’s milk, treating mumwhile pregnant creates a lesser problem once the kittens are born. Treatment for kittens also depends on their age or weight and the products used. This applies for both flea and worm treatments and, again, some products are not suitable, so veterinary advice is/should always be sought.

We often see kittens offered for homing at 6 weeks old. This is far too young as they have not built up their own immunity. Kittens do onoccasion come into care without their mother at this age but they arekept separate from other cats until they have had their first vaccination.Although this does not provide full immunity, it does give them someprotection should there be other cats in their new home. If both kittensand mum are still with us when the kittens are nine weeks old, we willget the mum neutered (she may have already started to call again) andalso blood tested to ensure she is not FIV or FELV positive. She willthen be vaccinated and micro chipped so that she is available for re-homing. Providing the blood test is negative for mum and she is healthy, we can assume the kittens will be too.

Although this is our normalroutine, sometimes things donot go as planned. Pregnancy isnot always straightforward andthere have been occasions whenthe cat has had to be rushed tothe vets for a caesarean (youcan guarantee the norm for thisis at night when the emergencyvet is on duty), which is an expensive operation. The kittens may be in distress as a consequence and very oftensome do not survive. For poorlittle mum, very often still justa kitten herself, this is quitelikely to be her first experienceof motherhood and now safelywith us, will thankfully be the last.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Weeds, hedges, trees, fences and much more

Investigatinga flash of yellow on a vacantbuilding plot I found aclump of unusual, seeminglymalformeddaffodils.Lookingthrough old bulb catalogues I found onephotographthat gave mea possibleidentification

and some research on the internet confirmedthat the variety I had found was Narcissus ‘Van Sion’, also known as ‘TelamoniousPlenus’. One American website stated ‘Whenpeople ask us to identify a double daffodil theyhave found in an old garden, a vacant lot, orway out in the middle of nowhere, it most oftenturns out to be ‘Van Sion’’. It seems that thisdaffodil has been around for centuries and it is

so tough that it multiplies where many otherdaffodils can’t even survive. It evidently nevergets basal rot but does sometimes produce seedpods and any seeds may germinate in grassyareas and produce new clumps.

What makes identification difficult is that it is so variable. It has been quite accurately described as a fairly mad and electrified dandelion. It is said that cattle never eat it and that rodents leave it alone which probablyexplains how it has survived the local muntjacdeer.

The first spring after the bulbs are bought froma supplier they will bloom with all the doublingneatly contained within the trumpet. But that is the first spring and every year after that thesame bulbs will produce quite different blooms– shaggy powder -puffs with no sign of a trumpet and in some years or some gardensthey will be heavily marked with green or theywill open gnarled or imperfect. They may beweirdly charming but they are not the sort ofbloom most people would want to see in theirwell kept flower beds.

E.A.Bowles, the famous gardener wrote aboutthis daffodil in 1934 ‘Its first appearance inEngland is first chronicled by Parkinson who

tells us in the Paradisus that Vincent Sion,‘borne in Flanders, dwelling on the Bank side(London) in his lives time but now dead, an industrious and worthy lover of faire flowerscherished it in his garden for many years without the bearing of any flowers until theyear 1620’. Another gardener A.M.Kirby wrotein 1907 that ‘it is not only the most importantof all doubles, but probably the most importantof all varieties, single or double’. This varietyhas been used, especially in New Zealand, forbreeding many of the double varieties we buytoday.

So here we have growing on a site in Sheringham, soon to be developed, one of the most historically important and unusualdaffodils. Hopefully it will survive the buildersand pop up in future years to surprise the newhouseholders.

The new bulb catalogues are arriving now, so make a note of any narcissi you want fornext year and get the orders off nice and early. There are certainly plenty to choose, from thehistorical varieties such as Van Sion at £1 a bulb right up to this year’s modern show quality daffodils which can cost over £25 a bulb.

Cromer and SheringhamProbus ClubThe April meeting took place on 2 April at the Links Hotel in West Runton, where the members enjoyed another excellent lunch, followedby an interesting talk by Jacqui Palmer, manager of the RNLI HenryBlogg Museum in Cromer, on the subject of “The Heritage of HenryBlogg”.

Reepham Festival securesrising roots star for 2013Reepham 13 Summer Music Festival organisers have secured a prestigious additionto this year’s roster of artists, with the announcement that rising folk-roots star and BBC award-nominated Luke Jackson will be performing over the weekend of 10th and 11th August.

Just eighteen years old but with a bold, show-stopping voice and honed guitar skills,Luke is a confident and captivating performer demonstrating an impressive maturity. He has been making ripples on the thriving acoustic scene supporting suchluminaries as Show of Hands, Paul Brady,Steve Knightley, Martyn Joseph and BooHewerdine and he has played the prestigiousfolk and roots festivals at Sidmouth, Bristol,Shrewsbury and Trowbridge.

Championed by the likes of Bob Harris,Simon Mayo and Mike Harding, his debutalbum ‘More Than Boys’ has received plaudits from critics and airplay on numerous radio stations.

Luke says, looking forward to the Augustweekend in Reepham, ‘It’s so much fun playing festivals because every one of themhas its own vibe and feeling. I am very muchlooking forward to playing at Reepham Festival this year - let’s hope the sun comes out!’

Reepham festival chairman Steve Jenkins says‘Each year we aim to provide a wide, eclecticand exciting range of music and entertainment, and 2013 is no exception. We’re really pleasedto welcome Luke to Reepham. It’s good to beassociated with a rising star and it looks as ifthis will be a case of ‘remember where yousaw him first’!’

Headlining will be masters of rhythm and bluesDr Feelgood, that most perennially popular ofthe legendary R & B bands. Monster of rockBuster James is back by popular demand andthere will be around fifteen hours of music for

all tastes on the Saturday with a full afternoon’s music on the Sunday.

The now-famous twin stage in the main arenaminimises the time between bands so that theentertainment continues without a break frommid-day on the Saturday through to theevening. Hot and cold food and drink will be available throughout.

The festival atmosphere continues on the Sunday afternoon when well-known local heritage attraction and festival main sponsor,Reepham and Whitwell Station, hosts themusic at the station site.

As always, the weekend offers something forall the family – and for 2013 the organisershave held tickets at last year’s prices. ‘Thatwas a big decision’ explained Steve Jenkins.‘People tell us it’s a good value-for-money day out. Wenever lose sight ofthe fact that we’reraising funds forlocal charities and the festival is not run for personal profit but even so, these are difficult times, financially, for many,

and we felt we could do something to help.’

And once again this year under 15s can enjoy the fun for free when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Admission to the Sunday event is free to Saturday ticket holders. Those wishing to make a weekend of it canstay at the festival campsite, which is filling up fast with half the pitches already booked.

“Reepham Festival strikes the right balancebetween a family day out and a marathontreat for music fans’ explained Steve Jenkins. ‘It’s all easily accessible. Peopledon’t have to walk miles from their car toget to the music. It’s a local festival with abig atmosphere and it brings visitors to thetown who are often pleasantly surprised bythis historic gem in the Norfolk countryside. Now that we’re firmly established on thefestival calendar we find we’re getting people travelling from as far as Scotland,Manchester and the West Country. We mustbe doing something right!’

Summer SunComedy, drama, spice and intrigue – the summer season at Sheringham Little Theatre looks set to offer a dazzling array of exciting shows.

Sheringham History GroupThe April meeting began with a brief AGM followed by a talk about"The Singing Postman".

Long standing Sheringham resident Des Barney shared his recollectionsabout his boyhood pal, Alan Smethurst.

Des felt he may have started Alan, the Singing Postman's interest inmusic, by sharing with him his own love for music and, at the time, a'shedfull' of records.

Alan's own interest in music included American Jimmie Rodgers andGeorge Formby who was from Lancashire, as was Alan's father. Accord-ing to Des, Alan bought a ukelele at a second hand shop in Co-Op Streetfor half a crown and composed tunes, including the third verse of "IDon't Work for a Living". At this point Des sang three verses. Des andAlan composed verses of schoolboy humour but Des refrained fromreciting them this evening. As the Singing Postman, Mr. Smethurst'smost notable song was "Have You Got A Light Boy? Des sang the titlethen played the song from a cd.

Alan's mother was from Stiffkey. During the summer, his parents senthim to stay with his great grandmother in Stiffkey while they rented hisroom to Sheringham visitors. Mr. Barney used to visit Alan there and hementioned the "Little Miss from Diss" had a sister also whom he met.Mr. Smethurst had his ups and downs as Des revealed, at one time out-selling the Beatles in Norfolk, appeared on Top of the Pops, and playedThe Hippodrome in Yarmouth. When he died in Grimsby in December2000 Des Barney attended the funeral of his boyhood friend.

The enjoyable evening was completed by excellent tea and biscuits, asusual.

Dear MargaretI would like to let all the good people of Norfolk know that there are still people out there who care.

In August 2012 we accepted an offer on our property which was inthe hands of Arnold Keys of Cromer and was given all the helpthat was required.

In October of the same year our buyers pulled out a few days before exchange, leaving us out of pocket and very, very angry.

We are now in April 2013 and we have now SSTC again and Ifirmly believe that this time it will be OK.

The confidence to continue with this very stressful situation hasbeen down to the support we have received from the following people:

• Kelly Moran of Arnold Keys Cromer (now to be working with Watsons of Sheringham) - we will miss her, but i am sure Emma will take care of us.

• Michelle Hann (W.H. Brown Cromer) who arranged our mortgage for our new property in Sheringham.

• and Sue Seal-Coon of Hansells Solicitors North Walsham.

Both my husband and I could not have come back from the brinkwithout the help we received from those people. We certainly had help from family and friends but help from thesources involved with conveyancing was invaluable.

Yours sincerely

Jayne and Brian Lowe

Dear MargaretUnfortunately, I have to agree with the Grumpy Old Man re charities.

I really am sick and tired of all the appeals on TV - there are twocharities I support - Arthritis Care and Kitalie (orphans inUganda). I know where I want my money to go - I have SLE -hence Arthritis Care.

If you read the blurb on charity bags, a lot say that things will besold at low prices to those who need them. I only put stuff in bagsfor recognised charities. I have a notice on the door, saying 'NoCharity Bags - it just gets ignored. The same as double glazingsalesmen - the double glazing was done a couple of years ago. I ended up sending a recorded delivery letter to the Managing Director of Everest, saying that if I wanted double glazing, I would ask for a number of quotes - I wouldn't just buy from someone who turned up on the doorstep - especially when theirshirt was untucked and their breakfast egg was down their shirtfront and that they could take us off their database and that anyfurther communication would be considered as harrassment.

We are bombarded with appeals - I am unemployed and on a verysmall pension, hence I am very careful about committing myself to any regular payment. I hate being approached in the street forcharity - 'only £4 a month.' I explain very carefully that I am a pensioner on a very small pension and that I can not commit to a monthly direct debit. No one has ever done anything to helpme - I've paid tax for who knows how many years and no onewants to help me. I have managed all these years - and no doubt I will continue to manage.

I think charity ought to begin at home. Why are we sending allthis money abroad? There are plenty of deserving causes here. Why do we think we have the right to interfere with another countries rules and politics? Their ways may not be the same asours - but that is their choice. If I go to another Islamic country - I have to obey their rules - including veils and no alcohol. I have toobey their rules - so why, when they come over here, do they expectus to follow their rules?

Give before you goAn appeal has been raised in the run up to the spring bank holidays asking people to consider giving blood before they pack up to go on holiday.NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are requesting that people donate before they travel to help maintain blood stocks throughout the summer.Nationally 7,000 units of blood are needed every day by hospitals to treatpeople suffering from a wide range of ailments and injuries. Blood donations are also a vital part of treatment for many conditions includingcancer and long term illnesses. Traditionally, the routine of giving blood can be disrupted during the holidayperiod as people are planning or enjoying trips away, often overseas. Certainholiday destinations could potentially increase the risk of travellers gettinginfections such as Malaria so, although the risk of infection is low, donorsare asked to wait for six months after their return, before giving blood.NHSBT would urge donors to give blood before they travel to ensure bloodstocks are maintained. Travellers to areas where West Nile Virus is

present no longer have to delay donation. As they can be tested followingtheir return, they are able to donate right away. If people are not sure if travel restriction apply to them, or have any questions, they can call 0300123 23 23 to find out.Derek Carr , Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHSBT for the Anglia area, said “We would love to see both new and existing donors come down to oneof their local sessions in May. We understand that people’sroutines change as they start to think about holidays and enjoying time away from theireveryday lives to spend with family and friends, but we hope people willconsider giving blood before they travel to help keep stocks stable throughout the summer months. Being willing to spare some free time, a couple of times a year, means you can help us to save lives.”Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and ingeneral good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blooddonor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the lasttwo years. For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.ukor call 0300 123 23 23.

This May Cromer and Sheringham will hostthe fourth Crab & Lobster Festival and ticketsfor the Opening Concert are now on sale.

With numerous events this year’s Festivaloffers plenty of fun for all the family across theweekend of 18 & 19 May. Events however, have already started with the launch of theScrumptious Seafood Trail and the start of theFestival’s Lifebuoy Art Trail on 15 April. Withthe Festival’s first Seafood Snack Trail alreadyunderway, people are out and about visitinglocal cafes, restaurants, pubs and hotels, sampling the Festival specials available onover 25 menus.

The Crab & Lobster Festival will kick off the coming holiday season with an OpeningConcert on Cromer Pier on Friday 17 May.This is a show for everyone who enjoys theseaside tradtion of Sea Shanties, folk and irresistible humour.

The ever-popular Olly Day returns to host theConcert which features music by the renownedSheringham Shantymen, internationally-respected singer John Conolly and comedy by Nigel ‘Boy’ Sayer.

Local sea shanty group the Sheringham Shantymen have, over 20 years, developedtheir own style of performing songs of the seaand as well as hundreds of local performances

the group has entertained at prestigious Maritime Festivals at Bristol, Southampton andPortsmouth Festival of the Sea.

John Conolly has based his style firmly in the folk tradition. His finely-crafted songs are performed with warmth, good humour and lilting accompaniments on guitar andmelodeon. Many of John’s songs have a tangof the sea, inherited from his upbringing on theeast coast of England.

Olly Day is firmly established as one of EastAnglia’s finest performers. His unique stylecombines an irresistible sense of humour, lotsof Magic and an impressive singing voice. Ollyhas just completed his fourth year on stage atCromer with the Christmas Seaside Special, torave reviews from both the press and publicalike.

Nigel ‘Boy’ Sayer is a naturalcomedian, using daft po-etry, hilarious stories andhis uncanny ability foracting the fool on stage toget a laugh. His 'countryboy' style of presentationadds an extra twist to his performance that hashis audience in stitches.

Tickets are only £5 and are now available fromthe Pavilion Theatre box office on 01263512495. Festival organisers said “the concertwill be an evening of great entertainment toopen the Festival weekend”.

The Festival weekend continues in Cromer on Saturday 18 May and in Sheringham onSunday 19 May with a programme whichpromises a feast of superb seafood, scintillatingstreet entertainment, music, film, seafood competitions and the return of the Festival’sWorld Pier Crabbing Championships.

Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “In 2012the Festival achieved enormous successes.Over 20,000 people enjoyed the Festival weekend, thousands followed the deckchairtrail and hundreds of children entered the design competition – it is hoped this year’sFestival, with an expanded programme of freeevents will achieve the same success and bringmore and more people to this fabulous area”.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb recentlybrought together community groups, parishcouncils and local GP practices in an effort topromote hospital transport schemes across theconstituency. Brilliant volunteers in some ofour local communities organise such schemesfor local people to get them to hospital. Can weget more schemes established in other townsand villages?

At a meeting in Cromer just before Easter, theMP highlighted the more than 2,000 journeysmade each year by the Holt Caring Society, which has been in operation for more thanthirty years. Similar schemes exist in communities across the constituency, includingin Ludham, Potter Heigham and Hoveton.Other areas, however, including Cromer, arenot covered.

The meeting was intended to provide

inspiration, information and advice to peoplewho might be thinking of establishing a similarscheme in their own area.

Commenting, North Norfolk MP NormanLamb said “I am regularly contacted by constituents having difficulty getting to doctorand hospital appointments. Public transportfrom rural North Norfolk into Norwich for ahospital appointment is simply not a realisticoption for people. My own mum, who is 94,was lucky enough to have the Holt Caring Society scheme available to help her get tohospital appointments in recent months. It is a fantastic scheme, very simple, very local, but of real practical benefit. It is a lifeline for people like my mum who cannot drivethemselves.” Andrew Wilkinson, BusinessManager at Holt Medical Practice, said “I’mindebted to Holt Caring Society and their

drivers, and so is the practice as a whole, for the fantastic service they provide. I am delighted to support and endorse the valuableservice the Holt Caring Society provides to our local patient community. The meeting was extremely useful and informative for thosecommunities hoping to set up similar schemesin North Norfolk. I just hope the momentumcan be maintained and more schemes are set up in the future”.

Commenting further, Norman Lamb said “Similar schemes in other communities are invaluable for local residents. At the meetingwe heard from groups in Holt, Ludham, PotterHeigham, Hoveton and Aylsham about how toset up and run a scheme, and the difference itmakes to local people. The community carschemes we already have in these villages andothers in North Norfolk show what a differencea small group of committed people can make. The question now is whether we can extendand support these brilliant schemes. If you want to discuss the situation in yourcommunity, or think you could help as a volunteer driver, do get in touch.”

Groups come together to promote voluntary community car schemes

Compensation for Vodafone customersNorman Lamb has received confirmation fromVodafone that compensation will be paid tocustomers who have suffered serious inconven-ience following poor coverage in the Shering-ham, Mundesley, Aylsham, Cromer and North

Walsham areas. Commenting, North Norfolk MP NormanLamb said “I am pleased to hear that Vodafonewill be compensating customers and stronglyfeel that it is the right thing for them to do.Paying customers rightly expect a certain level

of service, and if that isn’t delivered then it isonly right that they should be reimbursed.Vodafone have confirmed to me that they willlook at each case individually and reimbursecustomers depending on their situation andhow they were affected.”

Vodafone to pay compensation

Waitrose SupportMundesley Under 13sFootball ClubWaitrose North Walsham presented a cheque for £260 to MundesleyUnder 13s Football Club earlier this month as part of their 'Commu-nity Matters' scheme.Andy Wicks, coach to the boys said "This money is most welcomeas the boys need to some extra kit and it will help to provide warmup jackets"Each month Waitrose provides £1000 that is split between threecauses and customers 'vote' for their preferred choice by placing atoken in the box. The picture shows Kevin Woolstenholmes of Waitrose presentingthe cheque to Andy Wicks and the team.

The consultation, which began on Monday 22April and runs until Monday 20 May, includesan opportunity for members of the public todiscuss proposals for the site with NNDC Planning Officers at a drop-in exhibition at St. Andrews Church Hall in Holt on Tuesday30 April (3-7pm).

The site at Heath Farm and Hempstead Road is one of those formally adopted by NNDC inFebruary 2011 in its development plan for thedistrict, which identified a variety of sites forhousing, employment and other uses.

The 18 hectare site between the A148 CromerRoad and Hempstead Road could provide up to 290 new homes, including many affordablehomes, employment development, public openspace and community facilities including newallotments.

A development brief sets out key requirementsregarding layout, open space, access arrangements and the appearance of the development. It provides a master-plan towhich all developers working on site will need to adhere.

Those unable to attend the drop-in event cansee details of the draft development brief atHolt Library from 1 May until the end of theconsultation period.

The document and further information can be found at: www.northnorfolk.org/majordevelopments.

Representatives from the two largest land-owners of the site will also be on hand at the30 April exhibition, presenting indicative plansfor the development on their part of the site, which it is proposed will include a residential

development for 200 - 215 dwellings alongwith five hectares of employment land andpublic open space. The purpose of their exhibition will be to obtain the public’s viewson an outline planning application on theirland, due to be submitted by the end of May2013.

NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Memberfor Planning, Rhodri Oliver, said, “North Norfolk District Council really values theviews of local residents and it’s vital we know what people think about developmentproposals such as this. I look forward to hearing what people in and around Holt have to say so that we can give their views full consideration in any future discussions.”

Comments on the development brief should be received by Monday 20 May, addressed to:Major Developments Team, North NorfolkDistrict Council, Holt Road, Cromer, NR27 9EN or by email to [email protected]

Opportunity to comment on development plans for Holt siteNorth Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is seeking comments from the public on a draft ‘development brief’ for land at Heath Farm andHempstead Road, Holt.

BBC Televisions popular programme ‘Antiques Road Trip’recently visited North Walsham’s Timeline Antique Centreto film a piece for a future programme.Owner Michael Jones welcomed antiques expert James Braxtonand a BBC film crew to his centre. James, who had stayed the previous night in Upper Sheringham, had driven over in a converted vintage Citroen 2CV open topped car. He was on the lookout for bargains to be sold later at Gaze & Sons auctionestablishment in Diss, in the hope of making a profit for charity.

James scoured the centre in the search for bargains and waspleased to find something to satisfy his taste and pocket, beforethe time honoured ‘haggling’ took place and all parties werehappy at the outcome.

The BBC hopes to broadcast the finished programme sometimelater in the autumn.

Some 30 dealers take space in the Timeline Antiques Centre,

located in Midland Road in the town, which opened two years ago this summer, to sell items ranging from furniture to jewellery, ceramics, silver and glass.

6th April sees incometax cut for more than300,000 people inNorfolk Saturday 6 April marked the largest ever rise in the personal allowanceas it went up to £9,440.

As a result, 312,300 basic rate taxpayers in Norfolk will see their in-come tax cut for the third year in a row. Meanwhile, 34,000 of the low-est paid in the county will have been lifted out of paying any incometax at all since the Coalition came into government.

Local Liberal Democrat MPs Norman Lamb and Simon Wright hailedthe change as an important step towards the party’s goal of a fairer taxsystem. The personal allowance will rise again to £10,000 in April nextyear under changes announced in the recent Budget. It was £6,475under the Labour Government.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “These changes would not be hap-pening without the Liberal Democrats in Government. Times are toughbut we are committed to building a fairer society and this change willhelp people on the lowest incomes. In future I think that anyone earningthe minimum wage should not have to pay any income tax at all.”

Commenting, Simon Wright said "The Liberal Democrats are commit-ted to helping people on the lowest incomes and I'm delighted we havebeen able to meet this commitment, that was on the front page of ourmanifesto, a year early. The last Government hit low earners hard byslashing the 10p tax rate - now people who paid that rate before havebeen lifted out of tax altogether, and people earning the minimum wagehave had their tax bill cut in half. For low earners in Norwich this extracash will make a real difference."

The scheme, which has supported dozens ofyoungsters, who have gone on to carve out careers for themselves in the theatre, waslaunched in 2003 and includesclasses in both Sheringham andNorth Walsham.

Youth outreach manager BridgetRobinson, who has overseen theprogramme from the beginning, said participants had gone on to win places at drama school andto take up jobs in theatre, television and film.

“We work on performance skillsin our classes and so the sessionsare ideal for those with an interest in theatre or acting, and who perhaps want to take it further. They offer a pathwayto all sorts of opportunities laterin life,” she said.

But, she added: “The classes are also great funand are confidence-building for those who justenjoy taking part.”

This year has seen youngsters from the outreach programme win roles in SheringhamLittle Theatre’s community production ofAnnie. Some are also starring in The Guffin,

which is part of the National Theatre’s Connections Festival, and could end up beingstaged at the theatre in London.

The classes focus on stage skills, drama anddance for young people aged four to 16, givingthem a chance to gain nationally recognisedqualifications and step out on stage at a professional venue.

“These classes run by Sheringham Little Theatre are exceptional in that they give the

children the chance to appear within a real, working theatre,” she said.

“Furthermore, every year, we are swampedwith applications from Year 10 pupils lookingfor work experience at the theatre. As we cannot accept them all, we do give priority tothose in our classes.”

Hour-long classes are run at the Sheringhamtheatre on Monday evenings andat North Walsham High Schoolon Thursdays. Sessions are heldat different times for differentage groups.

Recent success stories includethe likes of Ryan Howes, who isabout to graduate from renowneddrama school Rose Bruford College, and has parts in thisyear’s professional summer rep at Sheringham.

“We are very proud of what ouryoung people achieve – we haveseen many of them grow and develop with us over the years,”said Bridget.

“We look forward to continuing to work withthem for another 10 years and to watch manymore go on to achieve great things.”

Thousands of Norfolkelectricity and gas usersset to make savingsNearly three thousand North Norfolk households will find out in thenext couple of weeks how much they could save on their electricity andgas bills, now the initial results of a council-run scheme to use thepower of numbers to negotiate reduced household tariffs have beenannounced. Across the county six local authorities are involved in the ‘Norfolk BigSwitch and Save’ scheme. In North Norfolk, where the scheme is run byNorth Norfolk District Council (NNDC), 2,796 households registeredwith Big Switch and Save.On 8 April, at the end of the registration period, energy companies inthe UK were asked to take part in a ‘reverse auction’ and submit theirlowest offers, the best of which would then be offered to all those whoregistered to see whether they could get a better deal. The auction was agreat success, with three companies, Sainsbury’s Energy, ScottishPower and British Gas winning in three different categories – dual fuel, electricity only, and prepayment meter customers. Overall, 71% of thepeople who registered could make a saving on their annual electricityand gas bills by switching to one of the offers, with an average savingof £111. The highest average saving would be £139 for Dual Fuelcustomers opting for online billing. John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said, “Alot of hard-pressed residents of North Norfolk could soon be in forsome really good news.”Households will be contacted over the next couple of weeks with theirown specific offer. They are under no obligation to switch supplier afterreceiving the offer, meaning that those customers not offered a savingthrough the scheme can be reassured that they are already on the bestdeal for them. And all is not lost for those who missed the opportunity this time round,as NNDC is hoping to run the scheme again later in the year.
