The heavens opened once more on the Sheringham Playpark on a late December day but this time it wasn't just rain that soaked the parents and children who are raising funds for a well overdue upgrade of the facilities. Nessa Wright, widow of Jamie Wright who was just 38 when he died from a rare blood disorder in mid October, made a special trip to present a cheque for £1245.73 to the Revamp Fund. Jamie was a very popular figure at Blyth & Wright, known to everyone in the town and was found to have suffered from a very rare condition called thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Only two in one million people are believed to have the rare blood disorder. Donations instead of flowers were requested to 3 different charities - Lifeblood, the thrombosis charity, the N & N Accident & Emergency Assessment Unit and the Playpark, which had been one of Jamie's favourite childhood play areas. Addressing Nessa, daughter Emily and Jamie's brother Chris, Rebecca Burrows, spokesperson for the group said, "As a group we have been very touched by the way the people of Sheringham have supported and encouraged this campaign, by donating items, money and time. Blyth and Wright have been so supportive of our cause, as they are for many others in our lovely town. Words can’t express our full gratitude for all the support you have given us, particularly at this time. Not all of us knew Jamie person- ally but it is clear he was a very well loved and respected member of our community. Your generous gift has made us ever more determined to continue fundraising until we reach our goal. We will provide Sheringham with a modern play park that would make Jamie proud and leave his name as a lasting legacy for this town. Thank you to Nessa, Emily, Chris and all the fam- ily." Also on hand was Brian Hannah, local councillor who is supporting the project, which needs to raise around £100,000. "I'll be doing what I can to help, but we all know times are difficult and the settlement from the government is not good." Rebecca also wondered why much smaller villages in the area have much better facilities than Sheringham - a very good question. So far the group has raised £4045.73 - there is a long way to go but they are determined. Last month the Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival proudly handed over grants totalling £7,500 to local charitiesand organisations from monies raised at thisyear’s Charity Windbreak Auction.

This year the Fishermen’s Mission was chosenas the Festival’s main charity for the vital support the Mission gives to fishermen andtheir families. On behalf of the Mission, senior superintendent Tim Jenkins, collected a cheque for £2,500.

The remaining £5,000 was distributed betweenfourteen local organisations who joined members of the Festival’s committee at a presentation on Sunday 2 December at TheConstantia where cheques were presented tolocal groups who work tirelessly for the benefitof the local community.

Festival Chairman Tony Shipp opened thepresentation by thankingall those who had helpedmake the Festival and auction in 2012 such a success, as well as allthose who had worked toconstruct the Crab PotChristmas Tree in Cromer. The grants were handedout to representatives from

the organisations present by Festival presidents Hilary Thompson and Noel Gant.

Over the past three years the Crab & LobsterFestival has donated over £24,000 to localcharities. At a time when fundraising is an uphill challenge, voluntary and communitygroups are more important than ever beforeand these grants will really help at a grassrootslevel.

As the festive cheer leaves us and people ponderhow to make the New Year better than the last, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is challengingpeople to spare an hour of their time to donateblood.

The New Year’s resolution message comes at a time when there a need to recruit new donors aftera dramatic decline in the number of younger donorssigning up in 2012. NHSBT aims to recruit 100,000new donors in 100 days to counteract this drop andprotect future blood stocks.

With blood donationsessions available for people to book an appointmentthroughout 2013, it isimportant that peoplefrom North Walshamhelp to maintain stocksas hospital demand forblood remains high atthe start of the year.

Derek Carr, NHSBT’s lead donor relations managerfor the Anglia region said “New Year’s resolutionshave become a bit cliché over the past few years aspeople always set themselves up for big challengesthey are unable to complete. Our challenge is a simple one plus we can guarantee donors a warmwelcome, a hot cup of tea and a biscuit to helpboost their sense of achievement not to mention thesatisfaction of knowing that they are helping sickand injured people in local hospitals with each andevery donation they make.”

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing morethan 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general goodhealth could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper agelimit for donors who have donated in the lasttwo years.

For more information or to book anappointment, call 0300 123 23 23 orvisit www.blood.co.uk

When buying a property at auction, you will find that it is very different tothe normal conveyancing process. Ifyou are the successful bidder then youhave effectively exchanged contractswhen the hammer falls, and both youand the seller will face financial penalties if either of you fail to complete the transaction on the completion date. All investigations and surveys on the propertymust be done before the auction date, as youcannot back out of the purchase if you discoversomething untoward in your searches or surveyafter the hammer has fallen. This does meanthat you will incur costs before the auctioneven though you may not be the successful bidder. The auctioneers will make an auction packavailable, which contains legal documentation

about the property, and the auctioneer’s termsand conditions. Your solicitor can advise youon this paperwork before the auction.

If you require a mortgage to buy a property atauction then it is wise to ensure that you haveyour mortgage offer before the date of the auction. If you do not, and your lender does notissue a mortgage offer or is not ready to releasethe funds in time to complete your purchase, you could lose the property and your deposit. If you are the successful bidder then you willbe required to pay the deposit (usually 10%)immediately. The remainder of the purchaseprice will be payable on the completion date. The date for the completion of your purchasewill be in the paperwork provided by the auctioneer and is usually 28 days after the date of the auction. If you do not proceed withyour purchase you are likely to lose your 10%deposit and could also face a claim for additional costs from the seller.

A purchase at auction can some-times be a bargain, but it is es-sential that you prepare properlybefore the date of the auction sothat you know exactly what youare buying and you have the nec-essary funds in place.

Osso Buco means ‘slowly braised’ in Italian. This is a family recipe - my great-grandfather, Leonardo Bizzarri, was theformer maître d’hôtel at the Savoy in Londonand studied under the legendary chef GeorgesAugust Escoffier. My great-grandfather retired to Overstrand, and inhis dotage was a bit of an experimenter in the kitchen. He married therich flavours of Escoffier’s stock to the succu-lent Norfolk beef he found here with fantasticresults.

The recipe’s been passed on to me and is a great, simple dish that is a bestseller when it’son the menu at the Grove.

We’ve had a really busy Christmas and New Year, and from January we’re introducing a real lunchtime bargain for allthose hardy souls who brave the Norfolk winter. If you’re over fifty you canenjoy two courses for £10 (or £6.95 for onecourse) plus coffee off the specials boards fromWednesday through to Friday – great localfood and a lovely setting to relax in front of theroaring woodburner.

I hope you enjoy Leonardo’s Osso Buco...

Ingredients:▪ 6 thick slices of Norfolk veal

or beef shank▪ 4 tablespoons of plain flour

▪ 30g of butter▪ 2 Spanish onions finely diced▪ 2 large carrots cubed▪ 2 sticks of celery peeled and

chopped▪ 2 cloves of garlic, finely sliced▪ 300ml of chicken stock▪ 1 tin of chopped tomatoes▪ 2 teaspoon of fresh chopped

oregano▪ 1 bay leaf

Method:▪ Season the flour and roll the

shank meat until fully covered▪ Melt the butter over a medium

heat and seal the meat until browned

▪ In a separate pan sweat the prepared vegetables until the onions are clear

▪ Place your floured shank meat on top of the vegetables and add the tinned tomatoes, stock, oregano and bay leaf

▪ Slowly cook everything on a low heat for eight hours, the shank meat will fall apart after this time, ensuring the most succulently tender dish.

A wonderful, tender and mouth-watering casserole, best served withrice, mashed potato or couscous.

As the branch enters its 13th year we do not know what challenges weface in order to help cats in our area. During 2012 we again re-homedover 200 cats and kittens and believe that before the end of this year wewill re-home our 3,000th cat, quite an achievement for a small branchrun entirely by volunteers. During last year we also paid for nearly 300cats to be neutered from branch funds (this figure does not include thosehelped with our fixed payment vouchers) and we will continue to helppeople on low incomes and benefits in this way.

Several of the cats and kittens which came into care last year had healthproblems. Cats like Nemo and Dori, victims of road traffic accidentswho required cage rest, or kittens like Dollar and Tuppence who developed polyps which have required extensive surgery because theyhad cat flu when quite young for which they did not receive treatmentbefore joining us. Also older cats like Simba (diabetes) and Trinny (thyroid) both now on medication for life who have settled in newhomes with caring new owners who understand their problems. Veterinary care is expensive but we will always help a cat if we possibly

can. Unfortunately, sometimes, we have tomake the decision we all hate for the cat’ssake, as in the case of Sheba, the little straywho had a massive tumour in her mouth andcould not eat.

At present we still have some of last year’skittens in care that are now classed as youngadults. They have seen their litter matesleave for new homes and for some unknownreason they have not been chosen. All arebeautiful and, because they have been withus for longer than usual, are well loved by their carers. Kittens likeTiger Moth, Comet, Piggy Malone Golly, Penny, Bluey, Graham,Patsy,Vulcan and Dakota, who are all micro chipped, vaccinated andneutered, and will make lovely companions giving lots of pleasure totheir new families.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858.Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Sheringham Society CoffeeMorningsThe talk in November was given by Bishop David Leake, formerlyBishop of Argentina. It was a most fascinating story of his life as a missionary amongst the indigenous tribes in the north of the country. He and his wife, Rachel, raised their three children with the tribal children and without any amenities such as running water or electricity. It made our lives here in the United Kingdom seem really luxurious.

There was no talk in December, but 32 members had a Christmas lunchat the Beaumaris Hotel. We had an excellent lunch, as indeed we did lastyear. It was a very jolly gathering and I think everyone enjoyed it.

The talk this month is on Thursday 31 January at St. John Hall in Wynd-ham Street when the speaker will be Ivan Hardy from the East CoastTruckers. This is a charity which helps children with special needs andtheir best-known work is the Children's Convoy which is an annualevent when 80 trucks leave Norwich for a day out in Great Yarmouth, going via Pleasurewood Hills. It is such a famous event that thousandsof people line the route of the A47 to cheer the children on. The childrenare always thrilled by all the people waving them on. I am sure it will be most interesting and uplifting talk and I hope that many people willattend the coffeemorning.

It costs £2 which in-cludes tea or coffeeand homemade cakesand everyone is wel-come. You do notneed to be a memberof the Society. Thedoors open at10.15am and the talkbegins at 10.30am.

Dear Grumpy Old ManWho rattled your cage? I've followed with interest the recent exchanges about computing and local politics, and chortled atyour stance. Well, your column wouldn't be 'Grumpy' unless taking a swipe at something now would it? And I suspect mostreaders take it with a fair pinch of salt, albeit secretly agreeing ordisagreeing with some of the gist (thought: how you must miss Alf Garnett!). However, I do feel for those who dare to disagree with you, such as Jan,who received a rather patronising response to what I thought soundedlike a very positive story. And as for Brian, who stuck his neck out indefence of long-serving councillors, I shudder to think what you mightsay ('hit a raw nerve' perhaps?).Yours is a powerful position, such as it is when protected by a HarryPotteresque 'Cloak of Invisibility'... so try not to be too defensive whenothers think differently please. After all, taking the politics point, itsounds like you'd be the sort of bloke to approach the experienced olderchap with the Brillcream parting in the DIY shop rather than thenewly rotated, though arguably more independent, spotty youth (apologies to any new councillors who have long forgotten about thetrials of teenage acne).Typed from my new IPAD4 (Jan.. you know what that means even ifhe may think it's a four bedroom flat).

Yours sincerelyA Nonnie Mouse, (name & address supplied)

Editorial Note - Yes, Grumpy is meant to be taken with a pinch of salt- sometimes the issues may be a little controversial, but also there aresome issues that are worth airing.

I have noticed with increasing irritation howusage of the English language is becoming sloppier and unthinkingly formulaic, withbroadcasters, news publishers and even thePrime Minister getting into the habit of sayingthe same thing twice - for example 7 p.m. thisevening or 10 a.m. this morning, as if cateringfor people who have no idea what a.m. and p.m.mean. Even worse is 17.30 p.m. this afternoon! The time honoured (no pun intended) word ‘o’clock’ has fallen out of favour – too old fashioned I suppose, but Bill Hailey singing‘One, two three p.m., four p.m. rock’ ratherlacks the same impact.

The latest example which had me reaching for my pen as I perused my newspaper is – electronic e-mail! I suppose it will not be longbefore somebody states they have received anelectronic e-mail on their computer, just to makesure we are aware it didn’t drop through their

letterbox in a stamped envelope.

Nick Robinson, reporting on BBC News, hasjust referred to prisoners on early release re-offending again. Re-offending is all that isneeded, unless they are repeatedly re-offending,in which case say so.

My point is that these careless little slips in thecorrect use of grammar, of which there is an increasing number, mean misunderstandings and misinterpretations can easily arise, causingerrors in judgement and leaving the sort of loophole that lawyers and accountants love.David Cameron has recently stated that a simple in or out referendum on membership ofthe EU gives the voters only two choices. No,it’s only one choice. Help us all!

One of my schoolmasters, at the beginning of each term, would write in the top left handcorner of his very large blackboard, in neat

capitals, two simple commands: ‘Accuracy! Listen to instructions’.

We used to regard this as hislittle idiosyncrasy, but I havecome to realise that the wisdomof this statement, which wasnever rubbed out, if followed, will save you a mighty lot oftrouble throughout life. Lack of accuracy andfailure to listen properly will constantly dropyou in the soft and smelly.

I received a draft of a legal document a fewyears back and was mystified by the wording in several places which could be interpreted indifferent ways. ‘Oh,’ said the solicitor airily, ‘if a problem arises any law office will be ableto explain it!’ How appalling. How inaccurate! How condescending. The solicitor will chargefor their explanation ...

Time to stop writing now, as it is 3 o’clock p.m.in the afternoon and my train leaves at 15.45hours. Confused? You should be!

Sheringham Baptist Youth Group played hostto Norman Lamb last month as he visited todiscuss issues of global justice. He was responding to an imaginative “bunting” petition that the group had sent him during the summer calling for greater transparency by companies extracting precious resourcesfrom African nations.

His visit enabled the young people to quiz himfurther on this issue, and through drama and aDVD presentation represent three more issuesof concern - unfair trade laws, climate changeand human trafficking.

Peter Bending, aged 17, quoting from Proverbs31 about speaking up for the poor and needy, told Mr Lamb, “A love for God and for othersis at the heart of the Christian faith and that iswhy these issues are of such concern to us”.

The group presented him with a pledge, whichhe willingly signed, asking him to stronglysupport effective EU rules requiring extractiveindustries to publish what they pay to developing countries. He also pledged to makesure the UK takes a lead role on the issue ofcorporate reporting, encouraging other EUcountries to follow suit and to make these regulations a first step towards a stronger

programme in 2013 toreduce tax dodging indeveloping countries.

He also agreed to represent the concerns of theyoung people to David Cameron about climatechange and human trafficking.

Youth Pastor Rev Peter Skivington said “Ithink it’s really important to for young peopleto engage politically, and to understand thatthey can use their voice to bring about changefor those trapped in poverty and injustice.”

Mr Lamb was very impressed by the youngpeople’s knowledge of the subject and desire to make a positive difference in the world. Heinvited the group to continue to petition, and tovisit Westminster in the New Year to discussprogress.

Runton Parish History Society – recalling the 1953 stormsThe 31 January 1953 is a date that has remained in the memory of manyNorfolk people who live on the coast. On that night a combination of ahigh Spring tide and a severe north westerly gale caused extensiveflooding down the east coast of England. Norfolk was badly affectedwith some 82 people losing their lives as the North Sea crashed throughdefences demolishing everything in its path.

Worst affected was the North West of the county where there was largeloss of life. Sea Palling was badly hit as well where seven people died. The area between Weybourne and Mundesley came off comparativelylightly with the protection of the high cliffs, but much damage wascaused to Cromer Pier.

Sixty years on from that dreadful night Runton Parish History Societywill be recalling the events with a presentation by local historian BrianHedge at East Runton Village Hall on 31 January at 7pm.Admission is £3 including tea and biscuits.

Community Music East, with funding from NNDC, is running a series of ‘rock school’ workshops across north Norfolk in 2013. Aimed at 14 – 18 year olds, the workshops have been designed to help young people develop their ‘band’ and performance skills. The programme will begin in January 2013 and will run until October2013. Those taking part will be offered the chance to perform at theYoung People’s Venue as part of Norwich Sound and Vision’s annual

festival which will run in October 2013.

John Lee, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet member for Tourism, Leisure and Cultural Services said, “Theseprojects bring tremendous opportunities to the young people of northNorfolk to engage in music making and to learn new skills.

At our November meeting at the PheasantHotel David Musson spoke to the Club abouthis work as a volunteer, fundraising for the National Trust.

David told us that, as a seven year old boy, hehad been looking for hobbies. It was to prove

fortunate for the NationalTrust that David’s interest lay in books,

stamps and birds. By collecting stamps andbooks throughout his life he has developed an expert knowledge.

On leaving school David, who had been impressed by the work of the National Trust,

was determined towork for them. Firsthe had to qualify as a Land Agent beforestarting what turnedout to be a lifetimeworking for the Trust.Based at Blickling, he was responsible for the opening ofFelbrigg to the public. He had to prepare areport on the income, expenditure and capital requirement of the property for thenext one hundredyears.

He spent his workinglife visiting severalNational Trust properties valuinghouses and their contents (furniture, works of art etc),

cottages and land throughout England, Walesand Northern Ireland.

Seventeen years ago he retired and was askedby the Trust if, as a volunteer, he would be prepared to raise funds.

He realised that he could use his interest and expertise buy selling books donated by National Trust members through a shop set upin a small room at Felbrigg. The idea provedpopular with members as they saw the fundsraised spent on local projects and improvements. This proved so successful thatthe Trust asked him to start another similarshop at Blickling – but in a bigger room! Manyold and some very rare books, dated 1542 and1548, have been donated. Stamps have recentlybeen added and six ‘Penny Blacks’ have passedthrough the shops.

Staff and volunteers, some with expert knowledge, sort the donated books and stampsand value them before selling them either inthe shops or through auctions.

David says the secret is to have the right bookin the right place for the right customer and is proud that his idea has raised nearly one million pounds for the Trust.

After several questions David was thanked byRichard Bottomley for such an interesting andentertaining talk.

An enjoyable Christmas lunch with Ladies andGuests was held at the Pheasant Hotel which isnow being refurbished.

A three dimensional face lift or body lift.

A lot of us think about improving our facial or bodycontours, whether it is to losesome fat from diet and exerciseresistant areas or just to lookgood. Liposuction has come ofage and is now performed purelyunder local anaesthesia. What iseven more attractive is that wecan now recycle this fat to fillout areas where you have lostvolume from!

Fat is your own natural filler. Fatis not merely a passive ‘filler'. Itis an active metabolic tissue anda rich source of various growthfactors and stem cells. Use of fatto fill areas of volume loss is notnew but we have new techniquesand refinements which make itvery successful. This procedure is very attractive if you are also considering body contouring or liposuction. Recent problemswith breast implants have made fat transferprocedure attractive for breast enhancement.

What happens with facial ageing? The old method of looking at facial ageing was based on a gravitational model: that allthings fall over time. The new model of the facial ageing process focuses on the primaryimportance of how the face deflates and losesvolume decade after decade. What was oncethought to be sagging has now been understoodto be caused by facial deflation. A facelift without volume restoration looks artificial. Replacing lost fat results in a natural look.

What happens with ageing of the body?Redistribution of body fat occurs due tochanges in metabolism and ageing. Fat is lost from certain body areas and face and accumulates in other areas such as chin, jowls, hips and thighs. These localised deposits of fatcan be resistant to diet and exercise.

What is fat transfer?Fat transfer is the transfer of fat from one part of your body to another. A doctor mustcarefully harvest fat cells that are then injectedto firm, fill out or plump up other body partlike hands, cheeks, breasts or buttocks. This is also known as fat injections or autologous fat grafting.

How are fat injections different from commercial fillers?

There are many commercial injectable fillers such as Radiesse,Restylane, Sculptra,Juvederm etc that areavailable for facialrejuvenation. Each of these products hasits own unique set of advantages anddisadvantages. An ideal substancewould be readilyavailable, inexpensive, long-lasting, natural-feeling, and wouldnot cause adverse reactions. Autologous tissuemeets these requirements. Since

it is your own body fat there is no chance of allergic reactions. Some of the injected fat canbe reabsorbed by the body and more than onesession may be required.

What happens during the procedure? This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The process requires gentle fat removal using low-vacuum limited liposuction and the use of thin, delicate, non-traumatic fine tubesto protect the survival ofeach harvested living fatcell. The fat cells arethen purified and slowlyinjected through tinyskin incisions into thetissue of the recipientsite utilizing a small syringe and cannula.Tiny droplets are placedthroughout the tissues assuring that each transferred fat cell willhave an adequate bloodsupply to achieve thepermanent survival ofthe injected fat cells.

What areas can betreated? The fat injections createa lasting youthful appearance.

Fat transfer to Face-Facial areas that can be treated with fat injections include the temples, eyebrows, marionette lines, under eyes (tear trough), jaw line, nose to mouth lines, cheeks, chin and scars due to acne, chickenpox, injury orsurgery. This provides a three dimensional volumetric face lift.Fat transfer to Hands-Fat injections to the hands achieve the effect of fuller more contoured hands as those ofyounger hands. Fat transfer for Breast enhancement-Fat can be taken from abdomen, flanks orthigh/ hip areas and delicately placed in fattylayer around the breast tissue. It can addaround one cup size to the breast volume.Fat transfer to Buttocks (Brazilian Lift) –Liposuction of the waist and flanks combinedwith fat injection in buttocks. Microfat graftingcan add fullness to any part of, or the entirebuttocks to create the desired look. The fat isfirst gently liposuctioned from the abdomen, flanks, hips or thighs and then processed usinga sterile decanting technique. The purified fatis then injected into the buttocks with specialcannulas.

What will my recovery be like?Patients who have fat transfer experience aquick recovery. Our patients comment that they

can go to work the next day.You are advised to rest for a few hours after the procedure. After 48 hoursyou may increase your activity as tolerated. Mostpatients are back to workwithin 2 to 5 days. Refrainfrom heavy exercise for afew weeks. Some amount of swelling and bruising can occur. Ice compressesare applied for 24-48 hoursto minimize inflammation.Discourage massage and excessive facial animationimmediately following fatgrafting. These restrictionsare to prevent migration offat away from the desiredareas of treatment.

The Government is providing around £80mfunding over ten years to help support the victims of Thalidomide, Norman Lamb announced last month.

The money will be paid to the ThalidomideTrust, which provides help and support to people disabled by the drug. The grant, pilotedfor the last three years, has previously been

used to help “thalidomiders” to alter theirhouses or other areas of life to improve healthand living standards. This most recent announcement recognises that their needs arelikely to increase as they approach older age.

Commenting, Care and Support Minister andNorth Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I wasdetermined to ensure that thalidomiders had

confidence that the necessary support would be there for them into the future. We wish toexpress our deep sympathy for the injury andsuffering endured by all those affected by thedrug Thalidomide. This deal represents ourclear acknowledgment that thalidomidersshould be supported and helped to live as independent lives as possible, and we hope thatthis funding will aid that cause and provide anelement of long term financial security.”

January can make even the most energetic of usfeel down in the dumps. The merriment of Christ-mas is now a distant memory, short days, coldoften dreary weather and a lack of money - it’s notsurprising we’re all in need of some cheering up.

To help you feel better and brighter than ever thisJanuary, the National Trust thinks it may have theanswer to easing those winter blues – experiencingnature’s winter wonders…

MAGICAL WINTER SKIESOften remembered for being grey and overcast, weoften forget the amazing winter skies full of in-tense colour, the perfect backdrop to witness hugeflocks of birds passing through. From the vastflocks of geese that can be seen in North Norfolk, roosting on the coastal marshes at BlakeneyFreshes to the sight and sound of hundreds of wid-geon and teal taking to the air at Wicken Fen, thisis definitely the time of year to be looking sky-wards. Don't be in a hurry to rush home either, theamazing winter sunsets are just as breathtaking.

FABULOUS WINTER GARDENS The bleak midwinter may not be the most obvious time to visit gardens, but this time of yearbrings its own magic. Trees without their leaves re-veal new views, statues cast long shadows fromthe low lying sun – our gardens take on an en-chanted appearance. The winter garden at Angle-sey Abbey in particular, with some 150 species ofplants is an oasis of rich winter colours that lift thespirits. It won’t be long before snowdrops startemerging hereand at Oxburgh Hall, Peckover House and Sher-ingham Park, creating stunning displays that trans-form the woodland floor.

STUNNING JACK FROSTAs the temperature drops, staying inside in thewarm may seem like the most sensible option. Butwaking up after a hoarfrost, our landscapes can be-come scenes from a winter wonderland. Coated inwhite, icicles and soft frost crystals transform thecountryside.it’s as though everything has been cov-ered by a blanket of snow. Ickworth, Wimpole andSheringham Park in particular lend themselves toscenes from a Christmas card, the perfect spots tobask in nature's majesty with frost-covered topiary, ice-rimmed lakes and breath-taking vistas.

WONDERFUL WINTER WALKSWhy not wrap up warm and banish those winter blues, on a walk that blows the cobwebsaway and sheds the extra pounds you’ve put onover the festive season? When the country is at itsmost wild and wintry, there are some great walksto enjoy at Flatford and Dunwich Heath, offeringsome of the best crystal clear views of the year. Wonderfully varied habitats toexplore; savour the views and absorb the

history and rich variety of trees, bird and animallife along the way. You can always call in for awarming brew at the end of your stroll.

LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOWYou’re never too old to have fun in the snow andit’s well worth visiting your local National Trustplace when there has been a fresh dump of thewhite stuff. Hatfield Forest and Blickling Hall notonly look beautiful, they’re great spaces for fami-lies to build the ultimate snowman, make snowangels and igloos of all shapes and sizes. Theslopes at Dunstable Downs lend themselves tosledging too. Of course remember to wrap up

warm, take care when having fun in the snow andmake plenty of time for hot chocolate breaks.

For more information about where to visit this Jan-uary visit our websitewww.nationaltrust.org.uk/eastofengland Many of our places just have a car park fee at thistime of year. Check on the website before visitingfor opening times and prices. National Trust mem-bers free.

North Norfolk Labour Partypraised by Ed Miliband forcampaign effortsTwo shadow ministers joined North Norfolk Labour Party at their annual Christmas dinner, when local members also received praise for a local ambulance campaign from the party leader Ed Miliband.

Rachel Reeves, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, told partymembers about the state of the economy and the threat that the countrymay end up in a triple-dip recession next year. Meanwhile Luton MPGavin Shuker, Shadow Minister for Water and Waste, spoke of the challenges ahead for the Labour Party.

North Norfolk Labour Party was congratulated for their campaigning efforts and the partial u-turn over ambulance cuts in north Norfolk.Gavin Shuker MP said that the Act on Ambulances campaign was “spoken about in Westminster with a sense of pride by those not even in the region”.

Ed Miliband also sent a personal message to the party: ”I want to paytribute to every single one of you involved in North Norfolk Labour.”He added: “I also want to recognise the fantastic work you are doingwith the Act on Ambulances campaign. You have gathered signaturesface to face and online, and won some great coverage for the cause.Your merit award for the campaign was richly deserved, and you areshowing what a great campaign force you can be”.

The shadow ministers were thanked for their visit with a piece ofCromer – silver crab napkin holders.

Although the overall targets areset by government for the wholeof the region, the data seen byNorth Norfolk Labour Party confirms in north Norfolk a decline in response times, and supports concerns about reducing the number of double-staffed ambulances in the district.

The data from the ambulancetrust shows that although therewere fewer life-threateningemergency calls in 2012 (4380in 2012 compared to 4937 in 2011) the ambulance service has seen more delays in thetime it takes for first responders, rapid responsevehicles, or ambulances to reach patients based

on those 'A8' and 'A19' targets. The number ofserious, but not life-threatening, calls in northNorfolk rose to 10,288 (up from 9862 in 2011).Denise Burke, chair of North Norfolk LabourParty, said “These figures raise further doubts

about the government’s programme of savingswhich is taking £50m from the ambulance

service over the next five yearsand has seen the number of dou-ble-staffed ambulances in thecounty reduced. With feweremergency ‘red’ calls being metwithin the eight minute and 19minute targets, and an increasein the number of green calls innorth Norfolk, there is a clearneed for more ambulances – notless – in our district.

In 2013 we will continue topress local MPs who supportcuts in the ambulance service torethink their stance, and we want

to see less talk and more action at the Norfolkand Norwich Hospital where there needs to bevast improvements in ambulance turnaroundtimes.”

500 ambulance hours lostat the Norfolk & Norwich Ambulances wasted more than 500 hours in October last year waiting to hand over patients at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. The total isnearly three times as high as the second worst hospital, Addenbrookes in Cambridge, which lost 185 hours.

The October figure of 537 hours is a 57% increase since July. The figures were obtained by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb. Mr Lambhas persistently highlighted the problem of ambulances ‘stacking’ atA&E, exacerbating the problem of slow response times in the county.Commenting, Mr Lamb said “These figures show the impact delayshanding patients over are having on our ambulance service. It is theequivalent to having an ambulance out of action for 22 whole days in a single month. The consequences of that are obvious. Part of the problem is that the hospital is constantly under pressure. The hospitalwas built using the widely discredited Private Finance Initiative andwith limited bed numbers. This means its always virtually full whichmakes it difficult to move patients into the main hospital from A and E. I have been saying for some time now that a key factor in poor responsetimes in North Norfolk is handover delays at the Norfolk and Norwich. These figures absolutely support that. I am pleased that at the meeting I had last week with key people in the NHS in Norfolk, there was a clearrecognition that the problem must be resolved. Cracking this issue is absolutely critical to improving the service here in Norfolk.”

New statistics confirm ambulance responsetimes are worsening – North Norfolk Labour PartyLess than half of the urgent emergency calls to the ambulance service last year in north Norfolk were answered within a target of eight minutes, and the percentage of ambulancestaff reaching patients within nineteen minutes in 2012 dropped from 80.6% to 72.4%.

Medals for veterans of theArctic ConvoyIt was announced by the Prime Minister at the end of last year that veterans of two Second World War campaigns will receive newmedals, following a campaign by veterans’ groups. Veterans of the Arctic Convoy will be recognised with an Arctic ConvoyStar medal, while the aircrew of Bomber Command will be awarded a Bomber Command clasp. The news follows a review by Sir John Holmes into the rules and principles governing the award of military campaign medals. The Coalition Agreement included a commitment to review the rulessurrounding the award of military campaign medals, as part of work to strengthen the military covenant. Liberal Democrat support for theNational Defence Medal campaign led to the scope of the review being widened and Sir John Holmes, a former UK ambassador, beingappointed to lead it. A previous review conducted under the last Government was widelycriticised for not consulting with outside groups. Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I raised this withthe minister on behalf of the many constituents who contacted me tovoice their support for recognition for the veterans of the Arctic Convoy.I am thrilled that the Prime Minister has seen the importance of thisissue and particularly of resolving it swiftly. The Liberal Democrats inGovernment have been working on the medal review for over a yearnow to get it as robust, as fair and as transparent as possible so that theextraordinary service of our veterans is recognised, no matter how longago their bravery was displayed. In their thirteen years of government,Labour refused to look at specific medal campaigns. I’m proud that theCoalition is putting that right.”
