On April 20, 2020 at approximately 1:50 PM, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies were dispatched to 946 Nashville Ave. SW, in reference to a noise disturbance caused by a possible explosion. Neighbors reported hearing an explosion and one neighbor advised his home shook when the incident occurred. Through an investigation it was discovered that Jess Paul, 63 years of age, resides at the residence where the explosion was heard emanating from and Paul built several incendiary devices. It was also learned that Paul had manufactured explosive darts which could be fired though a blow dart gun. “BCSO is one of the best agencies in the country at responding to extremely dangerous calls such as yesterday’s explosives call,” said Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III. “I am grateful to our deputies and the bomb squad, and to our federal law enforcement partners who continue to help BCSO combat Albuquerque’s crime crisis. Through our quick work and collaboration we ensured none of our children, families or businesses were harmed by the manufactured devices.” A District Court Search Warrant was obtained by BCSO for the residence. With the assistance of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives and Albuquerque Police Department, a search of the residence was performed. During the search of the residence 22 explosive darts were located. APD Bomb Squad attempted to remotely disassemble one of the homemade explosive darts at which time the device detonated. Fortunately no one was injured. Paul was arrested and charged with 22 counts of, Possession of explosive device or incendiary device. ###
