The Shepherd’s Field Therapy Team recently hosted a two-day seminar for our staff and local partners, including therapists from one

of our partnering orphanages in Taiyuan. LIH Olivia’s Place in Beijing taught the seminar, titled “Feeding and Positioning,” which focused on proper positioning, feeding techniques, oral hygiene care and basic language development for children with severe disabilities. Participants immediately put the newly learned techniques into practice with several practicum sessions – in fact, several of our own kids’ positioning and feeding techniques were evaluated and adjusted as a result. Our hope is that these seminars will strengthen our relationship with both Olivia’s Place and Taiyuan Orphanage, by providing better care for all children. Our team is looking forward to hosting additional continuing education seminars on varying topics in the future!

Cheetah Mobile Celebrates Family Day

Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village (SFCV) staff members, as well

as 14 of our kids were invited to attend the one-year anniversary of Cheetah Mobile (CM) charity club’s Family Day, where we celebrated the spirit of volunteering at SFCV. Shepherd’s Field founder Tim Baker and CM Vice President Celia Pan each gave a speech, after which Ms. Pan presented Mr. Baker with a check for 10,000 RMB (US$1,497). The event was held at the Cheetah Mobile Company’s beautiful office in Beijing.

The children enjoyed a magic show, got to blow hot melted sugar into glasslike animals, watch an acrobatic show, and listen to a beautiful instrumental performance. Cheetah Mobile also set up 12 project areas, and each kid was given a “passport” and a new backpack. After completing each of the 12 projects, CM staff stamped their passports, and they were awarded a prize for having a full passport of stamps.

Before departing, we took a group photo – but most of the kids were having such a great time they didn’t want to leave. The CM staff also didn’t want to see the kids go, and promised to visit Shepherd’s Field again soon. On the way back,

the children all took out their “passports” to compare who got the most stamps. We’re grateful to Cheetah Mobile for inviting our children to Family Day – we hope there will be many more opportunities to attend such activities, which uplift the children and give them wonderful memories. If you have any interesting

projects you’d like our kids to experience, please contact us at [email protected].

We’re entering the season of frosty windows, heavy coats and tiny mittens for our little ones! Winter is right around the corner in northern China, and

just like every year, we need to prepay our winter heat bill before the Chinese government will turn on the heat. This year, our bill is US$35,000, and helping us to heat our campus through the winter would be an incredible blessing. If you’d like to give, please contact: [email protected].

Welcome to Shepherd’s Field! Thomas (Hou Jikun)Two beautiful baby boys just arrived at Shepherd’s Field. They are Thomas (Hou Jikun) and Shawn (Zhao Anzhi). Thomas is an eight-month-old from Baotou, in Inner Mongolia. We named him Thomas after a guest who’s currently volunteering at SFCV. One-year-old Shawn is from Heze, in Shandong Province. He has a heart condition and an imperforate anus (both are now post-surgery). We named him Shawn after a long-time supporter and volunteer who donated our gym a few years back. Welcome to your new home, boys! Shawn (Zhao Anzhi)

Staff Gets Fire TrainingRecently, our staff and the older children all received intense training on how to use our fire safety equipment. Everyone listened attentively, followed the instructions on what to do in case of fire, and enthusiastically participated in putting out the practice fires. This was critical instruction, which will make Shepherd’s Field a safer place for children and staff alike.

Three More Makes 17

“After work every day I would immediately go to play with the kids, and I loved every minute of it. From spending hours with kids on my shoulders to searching for my shoes that Amanda and Gloria always seemed to hide, I felt true joy when I was with the children. I really connected with Kevin and Kennedy, and every day Kennedy would ask me, “You come over today after work, you promise?” Saying goodbye to them was so hard, knowing I would probably never see them again as both of them were matched with families. The staff and interns were amazing, and I felt like family while I was there. I will never forget the days in the greenhouse, nights with the interns, and especially the love from the kids.” Connor Castleberry – Georgia, USA

“This summer has definitely been the most memorable and fun summer I have ever spent at SFCV, and I cannot be more grateful to have gotten to know all the amazing interns and staff members. Not only did I learn how to lead a preschool and organize recreation and PE activities, but I also learned from so many amazing people who surrounded me, including the kids that touched me with their beautiful souls. This place will always have a piece of my heart; the kids and staff at SFCV will continue to inspire me long after I am gone; the miracles of adoption that happen there will continue to make me squeal with joy. Thank you SFCV from the bottom of my heart; these experiences were life changing. SFCV has expanded a new horizon for me, and I am so thankful, knowing that God let me discover my passion through serving orphans. The memories I made here will be cherished forever. I will be back!” Caroline Li – Georgia, USA

“This summer I had the wonderful opportunity to serve as an intern on the medical team. Going into the summer I expected the environment to be similar to my previous clinical experiences, in that I would be frantically trying to keep up with everything that needed to be accomplished during the shifts. However, I quickly discovered that being a medical intern at SFCV was not about checking items off a to-do list: it is about being present, building relationships, and providing holistic care to really exceptional children. God used this summer to turn my heart toward the things that He cares about. He stoked my affections for orphan care, taught me how to love without abandon, and showed me that people whom the world once considered broken are some of its greatest treasures. These kids changed my heart, and seeing the joy and love that radiated out of each of them made me realize how little we really need in life to be happy, and how simple it is to find joy if you look at the world through the right lenses.” Amanda Johnson – Texas, USA

Interns Reflect If you’re interested in volunteering at Shepherd’s Field, please write to us at [email protected]

Over the last several months we’ve been blessed to have many incredible summer interns join us as we serve these precious children. These young people have sacrificed their summers to give of themselves and live out the command given in James 1:27. Here are a few lives that were changed this summer:

Three of our kids were adopted this month, totaling 17 adoptions for the year. The eldest of the three was 13-year-old Patrick, who actually met his Forever Family last year while attending a camp for orphans in

the U.S. His family hosted Patrick in their home and fell in love with him, and the rest is history. We often say “it’s a perfect match,” and in this case there’s no denying it. When you see Patrick together with his parents, it’s like they’ve been together forever.

Four-year-old Ray (Wang Enzhe) also met his new family last year at the same camp in the U.S. They come from Pennsylvania, and

completely fell in love with Ray when they met. Anyone who has ever met Ray knows what a little hugger he is. Now he’ll get all the hugs he needs from his new Mom and Dad.

Isaac (Dang Mengyang) found his Forever Family right here in China. That’s right, another local family adopted one of our

children – making two this year! This rather shy two-year-old boy takes a while to get warmed up to new people, but has become bolder since starting school a few months ago.

Isaac was born with a cleft lip and palate, had surgeries performed in Beijing and is a handsome little boy. His new family is from Shandong Province.Fa m i l y
