Shepherd  Interns  on  Camden…

Emma  Busse,  Economics  &  Sociology  Washington  and  Lee  University

Class  of  2015  Cooper’s  Ferry  Partnership

“It  takes  a  mul1faceted  approach  to  combat  poverty  in  an  area  so  entrenched  in  hardship  that  it  some1mes  struggles  to  see  another  way,  to  remember  that  the  value  of  this  city  far  surpasses  its  crime  rates,  to  remember  that  Camden  is  simultaneously  "Apocalypse,  N.J."  and  the  City  Invincible,  and  to  see  beauty  and  opportunity  in  a  place  of  poverty  in  a  1me  of  rainstorms.  Cooper's  Ferry  has  become  a  part  of  the  fight  to  mi1gate  the  effects  of  the  "Apocalypse,  New  Jersey"  side  of  Camden  and  to  get  the  invincibility  of  Camden  recognized  once  again.”

Shepherd  Interns  on  Camden…

Jake  Struebing,  English  &  Poli1cs  Washington  and  Lee  University  Class  of  2014  U.S.  District  Court  and  ProbaCon  Office

“I  have  seen  how  the  role  of  government  in  distressed  communi1es  can  either  alleviate  the  burden  of  poverty  or  exacerbate  it.  I  realized  that  courts  have  the  opportunity  to  make  a  tangible,  posi1ve  impact  in  the  lives  of  indigent  offenders

nearly  every  day.”

Shepherd  Interns  on  Camden…

Leah  Gose,  Sociology  Washington  and  Lee  University

Class  of  2015  Camden  CoaliCon  of  Healthcare  Providers

“Camden  is  a  city  on  the  rise.  Yes,  it  has  a  long  was  to  go,  but  for  too  long  America  has  been  shoving  it  to  the  back  of  our  minds.  The  courageous  and  hopeful  people  at  the  Coali1on  are  the  perfect  example  of  the  faith  that

persists,  and  the  pa1ents  they  serve  are  never  without  a  flair  for  op1mism.  Change  is  happening  every  day  in  Camden.”
