The term "biogas" refers to gases created by the anaerobic fermentation of biological materials. Theirmain constituents are methane and carbon dioxide. Considerable quantities of biogas are produced bysludge digestion in the tanks of sewage treatment plants (sewage gas) and anaerobic fermentation ofagricultural waste and organic residues in garbage tips (landfill gas). Since biomass is a source ofenergy with no net carbon dioxide emissions, its use as a fuel can help reduce the use of fossil fuels,thus helping to reduce the greenhouse.

CMM USE IN IC ENGINES AT COAL MINES

Coal mine degasification was originally developed to improve worker safety in coal mines, sinceexplosive gas can form when methane mixes with air. Now, that gas can power the coal mine or be fedinto the public power grid. The thermal energy can be used for heating purposes on-site, or be fed into adistrict heating system. And finally, mining companies can obtain additional revenues by selling CarbonEmission Reduction (CER) credits following the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) or comparablemechanisms introduced among countries that have signed the Kyoto Protocol.

The main technical challenge in using coal mine gas in gas engines is the fluctuation of methaneconcentration during operation, as well as variations in gas pressure, humidity and quality that can beobserved from one mine to the other. SHENGDONG’S people took on this challenge 10 years ago andtoday is a leading supplier for such technology worldwide.

Use the coal mine, coal bed gas or mine gas, through the gas explosion-prevention ventilator,explosion-prevention mist transportation system, gas and liquid separator, coarse colander, extractcolander and electromagnetism valve, to mix the gas with the air in the gas engine and then conflagratethe mixed gas, in order to drag the generator to generate electricity.

Biomass is a renewable energyresource derived from the carbonaceous waste of various human and natural activities, including woodchips, paper mill waste, wheat straw, saw dust, bark, forest residue chips and rice shell etc. It is derivedfrom numerous sources, including the by-products from the timber industry, agricultural crops, rawmaterial from the forest and wood.

Biomass does not add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere as it absorbs the same amount of carbon ingrowing as it releases when consumed as a fuel. Its advantage is that it can be used to generateelectricity with the same equipment.

Traditional use of biomass is more than its use in modern application. In the developed world biomass isagain becoming important for applications such as combined heat and power generation.

Coking Gas, Refinery Gas, Coke Oven Gas or Synthetical Gas

Special gases are normally waste gases from industrial or gasification processes. Using them as fuelsfor combustion engines represents an important contribution to the protection of the environment byreducing the use of fossil fuels and the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere. There isconsiderable potential for the disposal of industrial waste gases, hydrogen, wood pyrolysis gases andflare gas through gas engine power generation technology.

Shengdong engines are not only renowned for being able to operate on gases with extremely lowcalorific value or low methane number, but also gases with a very high calorific value. For example, thecoking process produces coke, coke gas and tar. The main constituents of coke gas are hydrogen,methane and carbon monoxide. The coke gas must be purified to remove the tar only before it can beused to fuel the Shengdong engine.

Cogeneration is an energy management solution for today.Cogeneration, also known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), is the on-site production of two kindsof energy usually electricity and heat – from a single source of fuel. Cogeneration can replace the

traditional method of supplying energy frommultiple sources, e.g., purchasing electricity fromthe power grid and burning natural gas or oilseparately in a furnace to produce heat or steam.These methods can waste up to two–thirds ofthe energy in the original fuel — losses that aremade up for in high utility rates.

A cogeneration system normally consists of aShengdong gas engine turning an alternator toproduce electricity, and a waste heat recoverysystem to capture heat from the exhaust andcooling water jacket. Nearly 80% of the energy inthe original fuel is put to productive use in atypical CHP system.

About Shengdong Gas inner combustion engineWorld’s first inner combustion engine is an engine fueled by coal gas, German merchant and engineerNikolaus August Otto invented that four stroke inner combustion engine in 1876. After about 10 years’continuous improvement, another German engineer Gottlieb Daimler who is well known as a pioneer ofmodern auto industry successfully developed the inner combustion engine fueled by gasoline. The firstdiesel engine was invented later by Rudolf Diesel in 1890s.

Shengdong Gas engine works under the same principle of diesel and gasoline engines and it needsspark plug to ignite. Working temperature of core part in its cylinder can reach 1400℃, which makes itsefficiency much higher than that of steam turbine, even gas turbine. Generally gas inner combustionengine’s efficiency is between 30% and 40%.

The prominent feature of Shengdong gas generator units’ advantages is its high efficiency, then it is ahighly integrated system, easier to install; it doesn’t have very strict requirement to gas condition (dust,moisture, etc.); it doesn’t consume large quantities of water, and its building cost of equipment for 1 kWhpower is lower.

Shengdong generators have high performance control system and high quality monitor instruments withthe functions of low-voltage, over-current and revere power protections etc. Meanwhile, the control panelcan monitor speed, water temperature, lub-oil temperature, lub-oil pressure and exhaust temperatureparameters of the engine. It is also equipped with sound and light alarm devices for main parametersand automatic shutdown device.

● The unit is a highly integrated system and little assistant equipment is needed; it is easy to build up thestation and little investment is needed.

● The building period of the station is short. Usually, the building period of a 3000kW station won’t beover 2 months. It is a solution of low running cost and quick capital recovery.

● The operation of the units is very flexible. It can be used singly or parallel connection with other units. Itcan be used by the way of equipment-connection and grid-connection. Users can adjust the quantityof the running units at any moment to make better use of the equipments and lower the operating cost.

● A little time is needed from starting the unit to generating power by the way of grid-connection, thewhole process can be finished in a short time. It can generate power by itself or by the way ofgrid-connection. The operation is so simple that even common workers can master it proficiently aftera short-term training.

● The unit is of strong maintainability. Low malfunction rate. All the problems occurred can be solved bythe maintenance staff on the spot.

● The gas-distributing system of the unit applies the camshafts and other gas-distributing outfits whichare especially designed for gas engine. It is of unique gas-distributing phrase, gas-distributingincluded angle and advance angle of ignition which can make the engine achieve a better burningeffect.
