SHELTER SHORTS is a monthly newsletter intended to keep Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter volunteers and sup-porters connected. With everyone’s hectic schedules, we know it is often difficult, if not impossible to attend month-ly meetings or to work at all of our fundraisers.
Everyone is invited to submit articles for the newsletter. To do so, please call Bev at 608-326-2914 or email her at [email protected].
Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Thurs-day of every month at the Prairie du Chien City Hall. Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. Please use the back door. Everyone is welcome and encour-aged to attend. The next general meeting is August 15th.
Planning Meetings will be held in conjunction with board meet-ings on the 2nd Thursday of the odd numbered months.
Volunteer hours will be collected by Randy P. at monthly meetings or you can email your hours to Randy at [email protected].

Putting for Pets was held on Sunday, July 21st at Prairie Funland. Once again, the response to this event was less than expected. I believe there were a total of 7 teams (4 were RABAS mem-bers). Prairie Funland sponsored 2 teams which means Paula, Randy and Kurt Sheckler paid RABAS for their teams to golf on their own golf course, not unlike those of us who bake for bake sales buying back our own cookies. Even though it was not as well attended as we had hoped, it was a lot of fun and gave those of us who participated a chance to try out the minia-ture golf course. The Sheckler family provided delicious Subway Subs and Papa Murphy Pizzas before we teed off. Ma’s Bakery donated a cheese tray. Shecklers hope to team up with RA-BAS again to sponsor another golf tournament.
Nelson True Value/Schwan’s Frozen Products – We held a brat/hot dog stand at Nelson True Value on July 13th. Merilee had contacted Schwan’s to see if they do fund raisers. We de-cided on the fund raiser where we would make a percentage of dollar amount sold. Jill set the fund raiser up to coincide with True Value’s brat and hot dog stand. There was only one catch – we would need to sell $750 worth of Schwan’s product before we would make 10 per cent. I thought that it would be a long shot to sell that much product in 4 hours, but thanks to the ad in the paper and the generosity of so many of you, we sold about $790 worth of product. We have not yet received the check, but I am sure it is being processed. So with food sales totaling $321, donations amounting to $82.70 and approximately $80 from Schwan’s, our profit, less advertis-ing should be about $350. Not bad for 4 hours and just a couple of people – much better per hour than Country on the River with a lot less hassle.
Yappy Hour was held at The Sawmill Saloon on Thursday, July 25th. It was scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and by that time there were already a few dogs in the fenced in patio. But, then a heavy downpour pretty much put an end to Yappy Hour. A number of people asked if we were planning to reschedule. Even in that short time, we took in over $125 in donations.
Crawford County Tavern League – On Saturday, July 21st, Randi K., Kristi Nelson and I were at the True Value Food Stand. At some point in the afternoon, I saw Randi talking on a cell phone. She handed it over to me. Jann Sturmer, from Captain’s in Eastman was on the phone. She ex-plained to me that Bonnie from The Sawmill had told her that the Crawford County Tavern League should make a donation to RABAS. She said she had a check ready for us and asked if I could pick it up that day. I told her I would be up there as soon as we were finished at the True Value food stand. I drove up there and picked up the check for $250. She had someone take our picture for the paper and said if I got the picture and an article in the paper we would receive an additional $250 from the State Tavern League. Jann did send me an email, but there was not a picture attached. So I am wait-ing for her to resend the email with the picture attached. That has not happened yet.

Dr. Donna Higgins continues to support RABAS through her beautiful wildlife prints on display at her office in downtown PdC. She has recently changed the format to 12” x 12” prints in bor-derless “clip” frames. Donna explains that these may be more affordable at $35 each. She will donate $25 to RABAS for each print she sells. These prints are absolutely beautiful! Please stop in at Dr. Higgins office, downtown PdC to see them. You may be able to see them on RABAS’s face-book page or Donna’s facebook page, or possible on our website.
Please continue ordering cat and dog treats from USBones.com. They donate 25% of each or-der placed, to RABAS!

Kwik Trip Gas Cards sales from June19, 2013 through July 18th, totaled $2,350.00 for a profit of $235.00. For another month we have hit an all-time low in sales. I would like to thank those of you who continue to support Rivers & Bluffs through the purchase of these cards. I am disappointed that more of our members and volunteers will not help us to increase our funds by purchasing the Kwik Trip Cards for gas and store purchases. Please remember, that this is an easy way for those who want to help our very worthwhile cause. If you want to help us reach our goal of an animal shelter by purchasing the Kwik Trip cards, please reply to this email or contact Jill, Donna or myself before filling your tank. A reply to this email or a phone call will result in delivery of your cards on the same day or the next (Jill – 326-4870, Donna – 608-379-2112 or myself – 326-2914 or 306-1260). Again, thanks to everyone who supports Riv-ers and Bluffs Animal Shelter through the purchase of these cards. If you have purchased them in the past, but no longer do so, would you please reconsider doing so again?
Phoneraiser –Thanks to everyone who saves their inkjet cartridges and old cell phones for RABAS. Thanks also to Donna Heilmann who takes care of shipping these items to Phoneraiser on a regular basis.

Prairie Pool Puppy Paddle is now less than a month away. The date is Saturday, August 24th. We are in need of volunteers to help with this. Jill and Brian have a wedding to photograph that day and I have a wedding to attend. I will be able to help with set up and be there until at least noon or 12:30. We have been doing this event for a number of years, so it pretty much comes off without much effort. But we still need people for registration, food stand, clean up, etc. If you can help, please reply to this email or call Bev at 326-2914. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate. The hours are from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. We usually start around 8 a.m. with set up. If you know of any businesses who could sponsor this event, please let me know. If we could get a few businesses to donate between $100-$200, this would cover our advertising expenses.
Jack-o-lanterns & McGregor Arts and Craft Fair in October – Phil and Deb have picked up the fence posts and supplies necessary. Instead of RABAS volunteers painting the posts, Phil and Deb will do all of the work. They are also donating all of the lumber, paint, and other items needed to turn the posts into cute jack-o-lanterns. Deb and Phil will deliver them to my house when they are finished in time for October Arts and Crafts Fair in McGregor. Thank you, Deb and Phil for all you do for RABAS and sharing your talent with us.
Villa Louis Carriage Classic Wine and Cheese Event – Mike and Shelly Rider have once again offered us the opportunity for a sizeable donation by hosting the Villa Louis Carriage Classic Wine and Cheese Event on Friday, September 6th. This will involve 4-5 people at the most
Pampering for Pets – Ashley from Mist-ified, LLC has offered us another opportunity to raise funds for RABAS. For two weeks in September (September 12-26 – possible dates) Ashley will donate 40 per cent of all her services to Rivers & Bluffs Animal Shelter. Services will include tan-ning, manicures, pedicures, nails, waxing and makeup. Donation does not include product pur-chases. If you are planning on any of the above services in the near future, please consider Pamper-ing for Pets in September.
Guest-Server Night at Pizza Hut is set to go. The date will be confirmed in August. This is usually a successful fund raiser for RABAS. And it is also one of the easiest ones – all we have to do is show up, serve a few pizzas and bus a few tables and we make close to $1000 in a few hours. More on this to follow.

Adoptions, Losses, People Looking for a New Pet, Pets in Need of a Forever Home
There are a number of cats and kittens in need of a forever home. They are listed on our website. A few weeks ago, Deb Cross and Kate Maxfield were packing toys and clothes at Monkeys Tale. Deb was in the back of the store and heard a kitten meowing. She followed the sound and found a kitten underneath the hood of a car belonging to the renters above Monkeys Tale. Luckily for the kitten, Kate fell in love with it immediately and it has a forever home with Kate, Christian, Gracey (recently adopted dog), and an older cat. Congrats to all.
Therapy Dog Teams – I believe Kathy and Paula and their dogs Digger and Maggie continue their weekly visits. Deb visits Walter Schmidt Home as time allows. I again have not been doing much, but hope to get more involved as we move closer to fall. On July 15th the dogs and I visited Walter Schmidt home and the day care next door. It was a very hot afternoon. The kids were to have a water melon seed spitting contest after we left. The kids were all very attentive and interest-ed in the dogs. As always, I heard many stories about the children’s pets. It was nice to be back at Walter Schmidt and visit with a few of the people who I knew from when I first started visiting there years ago. doing visits. I do hope to resume Wyalusing Academy visits in the very near fu-ture.
Land Acquisition – Nothing new to report at this time, but we do hope to have some news (good or bad) in the next month or two.
Pounds Off People and Pooches (POPP) Weekly Dog Walks have begun, but with the rain and cold temps in May and then all of the rain in June and then the heat in July, dog walk has been canceled most of the summer. Hopefully, the rest of the summer will cooperate and we can get a few summer/fall walks in.. The dog walk starts at 6 p.m. We meet just east of the Villa Louis and north of the Sculpure Park. There is a parking area there for cars. Please bring water for your dogs as well as bags to pick up after your dogs. Dogs must be leashed and flexi-leads are discouraged.
Chasing Daylight Animal Shelter, Tomah, Wisconsin - A few weeks ago, fellow RABAS member and volunteer Tori Armstrong and her father were passing through Tomah, Wi on their way home from northern Wisconsin. They decided to stop in and visit Chasing Daylight Animal Shelter. Both were very impressed with the shelter as well as staff. Staff answered their questions and gave them a tour. Tori had pictures of Chasing Daylight at the July RABAS meeting. A few RABAS members will hopefully tour the facility in early July. Tori provided the group with a number of suggestions from Chasing Daylight. Thank you, Tori, for sharing this information with us.
Dog Obedience Classes – The next session will start in late August or early September.
