WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

Royal Dutch Shell and Oman’s State General Reserve Fund (SGRF), plan to invest $53 million in GlassPoint Solar, fuelling speculation that the oil giant is taking its eco-responsibilities seriously.

GlassPoint, a Californian company, is the leader in Solar Enhanced Oil Recovery (SEOR). The funding will be used to accelerate the deployment of solar steam generators, which will help in reducing natural gas consumption of oil fields by up to 80 per cent.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

GlassPoint uses solar energy to convert water into steam, which is injected into oil fields to heat crude so it can flow out more easily.

The company already has a small demonstration plant in southern Oman, which currently produces 50 tonnes of steam daily – sufficient to meet the requirements of large-scale projects.

This technology is extremely useful in oil-producing areas, especially in countries where the sun’s energy is available in abundance.

HELP FOR COMPANIES STRUGGLING TO MEET CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSION NORMS?

Using solar power for oil production is attractive to many businesses because it is not dependent on government subsidies and incentives.

The standard way of heating water, which is used for steam injection, is with gas boilers. However, many Middle East countries are under pressure to preserve their natural gas resources for residential and commercial use.

Most countries in the Middle East avoided using solar energy for crude oil production because it was difficult to keep the mirrors clean. GlassPoint has tackled this problem by protecting the mirrors from dust, wind, and storm by placing them in conventional greenhouses.
