Our OperationsThe Jumping Pound Complex produces natural gas (methane), ethane, propane, butane, condensate and sulfur, with a production capacity of 7,700 million cubic meters of raw gas per day. We operate over 90 wells in five fields for the Complex. Shell discovered the Jumping Pound gas field in 1944, and since 1951, its first year of operation, the complex has supplied Calgary and the surrounding area with a significant portion of its natural gas heating.

The Waterton Complex is located in the Municipal District of Pincher Creek in Southwest Alberta. Since its first well in the area in 1957, Shell has drilled more than 75 wells and has a design capacity to produce nearly 179 million cubic feet per day – enough gas to meet the average annual residential natural gas needs of over 650,000 Canadian households.

The Central Alberta Business unit includes the Caroline Complex, Shantz Sulphur Forming Facility and West Country Gas. The Caroline Complex is located 170 km northwest of Calgary near Caroline, Alberta. It includes the gas field, two compressor stations and a major gas processing plant.

Started in 1993, it now produces natural gas (methane), natural gas liquids, condensate and sulfur from 10 producing wells. From the complex sulphur is pipelined 41 km to the Shantz Sulphur Forming facility where it is formed into pellets and transported by rail to Vancouver for shipment to international markets. West Country Gas includes the Limestone, Clearwater, Ram and Tay fields and is located on crown land to the west of the Caroline Field.

Shell brings a long history of operational excellence to central and southern Alberta where its Greater Foothills assets are located. Greater Foothills is comprised of three distinct sour gas complexes: Waterton, Jumping Pound and Central Alberta.

In support of this, we have five aspirational operating principles that focus on safety and protecting water, air, wildlife and members of the communities where we operate.

For example, Shell supports a wide range of social investment programs in the Foothills region. In 2015, we spent more than $480,000 on community, environmental and educational initiatives.

We also go beyond required government regulations to conserve and reclaim sites and access roads from which we are no longer producing. Shell’s Decommissioning, Abandonment and Reclamation team, or DAR, proactively manages the decommissioning, environmental assessment

and remediation of our assets to meet the expectations of our regulators and our community. Sites are restored with native vegetation, trees and shrubs that match the surrounding areas, sustain the land use and truly reduce our footprint. Shell doesn’t just reclaim the site of an abandoned well; we also reclaim the site’s access road to ensure we minimize our footprint.
