Setup and Use

> The Shelf Pin Routing Jig should be used only with a plunge router and only on unassembled case pieces. Use with a fixed-base router could result in damage to the template and the workpiece.

WARNING

1. Install the included Router Guide Bushing on the baseplate of your plunge router, securing it with the knurled lock nut. (When the jig is not in use, the Guide Bushing can be stored on the jig by fitting it into the large hole in the clear plate and threading on the lock nut.)

2. Install the appropriate router bit in your plunge router. For a snug fit with 1/4" shelf pins, we recommend using a 15/64" straight bit (90011, sold separately); for 5mm pins, we

recommend a 3/16" straight bit (90000, sold separately). Note: Because of the clean, straight holes produced with a plunge router and this jig, no shelf pin sleeves are necessary. This jig is not recommended for applications in which shelf pin sleeves are desired.

3. Set the plunge depth of your router as needed to accommodate the shelf pins you plan to use. Make sure the bit will not cut all the way through your material.

4. Determine roughly where you want the run of holes to begin and end on the unassembled case sides. Measuring from the top to the approximate center of the run, mark a reference line across the width of the case sides at exactly the same location on each piece. Accuracy is crucial because this line will serve as a guide for positioning the jig. Any discrepancy will lead to uneven shelf pin locations and wobbly shelves. Fig. 1.

> The Shelf Pin Routing Jig should be used only with a plunge router and only on unassembled case pieces. Use with a fixed-base router could result in damage to the template and the workpiece.

> Failure to secure the Router Guide Bushing tightly to the router base could allow it to come off during routing, possibly damaging the router and bit and potentially causing serious personal injury.

> The Shelf Pin Routing Jig must be clamped to the workpiece, and the workpiece must be clamped to the bench or table. Failure to clamp the jig and the workpiece could allow shifting that could damage the workpiece and cause personal injury.

5. Move one of the case sides so that its front edge overhangs the edge of the work surface by 2".

6. Position the jig so that the fence is tight against the edge of the case side and the short horizontal line next to the center hole on the jig aligns with the centerline you marked on the side. Clamp the jig to the workpiece, and clamp the workpiece to the table or bench. Fig. 2.

Failure to clamp the jig to the workpiece and the workpiece to the table could allow shifting that could damage the workpiece and cause personal injury.

7. Position your plunge router on the jig so that the Router Guide Bushing fits into the first guide hole.

8. Turn on the router; plunge the bit fully and then allow it to retract fully into the router base.

9. Lift the router from the jig and move to the next guide hole. Plunge the bit fully and then allow it to retract fully into the router base.

10. Repeat Step 9 for each additional guide hole. Switch the router off once the final hole has been routed.

11. If you need to extend the run of shelf pin holes, unclamp the jig and slide it in the desired direction. If machining holes for 1/4" pins, align the 1/4" indexing hole with the second hole in from the end; if machining holes for 5mm pin, align the 5mm indexing hole with the third hole in from the end.

12. Insert a shelf pin through the indexing hole and into the case side to lock in that position. Make sure the jig’s fence is tight against the edge of the workpiece and clamp the jig in place. Fig. 3.

13. Repeat Steps 7-11 until the run of holes is complete.

14. Repeat the process for all of the case pieces requiring shelf pin holes.
