Little history of steel in Sheffield

▪ 1742 in Abbeydale, Benjamin Huntsman founded Crucible steel.

▪ In 1916 Harry Brearley and Dr. W.H. Hatfield founded Stainless Steel, the most commonly used steel to this day.

Aspects we could focus on

Crucible steel is still used in some old factories to make glass bottles.

How steel impacted Sheffield as a city and for the world. As to why steel is one of the iconic contributors to why

Sheffield is so popular. How the crucible theatre is named after the infamous

Sheffield founded steel. Two of the biggest Sheffield based ice hockey teams have ‘steel’ in their team name to reinforce how iconic steel is to Sheffield.

We would want to interview people who may have worked in those factories and people who have done a lot of historical research into the steel industry particularly in Sheffield.

What we want the end product to be like

▪ We are aiming for a historical feel which will be brought out in the filters we use over the footage, in post production.

▪ The sound will be very mechanical but easy listening so it helps connect the scenes.

▪ Some of the camera movement will follow the movement of the machinery.

▪ We will need to use some archive footage to show the difference of the machinery over time.

▪ We would want interviews with people who work(ed) in the steel factories.
