Another thanks goes to Rose Beck for setting up the food and dessert. As we all enjoyed sipping our wine and eating hors d’oeuvres while listening to the to the Hot Frittatas Trio, we viewed over 1500 images of old Calistoga from the museum’s photo archives on our new media screen. Thanks to DeAnn Wylie for making the magic happen.

Please add these two museum events to your calendar: Saturday, December 2nd is the Christmas Faire at Fairgrounds from 9am-4pm; and Tuesday, December 5th is our Annual SMA Christmas Luncheon at the Calistoga Inn starting at 11:30am, $35/person. Sister Ross & Sister Agurto, LDS missionaries, enjoyed a personal tour of the Sharpsteen during a visit in October. Lucky for them, they were fortunate enough to meet and have their photo taken with Sam Brannan himself. “We love this museum!” the Sisters told us.

We especially thank Rose Beck for the lovely hospitality table and again thanks to Jim Barnes who tended the wine bar. Thank you to the raffle ticket sellers Sue Mauro, Marilyn & Lorne Glaim, to Kathy Bazzoli and Bev Barnes who attended the front counter, and to The Hot Frittatas Trio who added to the entertainment of the evening. Forgive me if I left anyone out.

The next special exhibit will be in the spring of 2018 and is tentatively titled "Stories told with a Paintbrush: the Narrative Artworks of Ben Sharpsteen”. Patsy Hahn, Special Exhibits Chair

For Mark Twain lovers, “The Purloining of Prince Oleomargarine”. In a hotel in Paris one evening in 1879, Twain sat with his young daughters who begged their father to write a story just for them. Flipping through a magazine for simple inspiration, the title of this book, and thereby the basis for a magical story was born. Johnny was a poor boy in possession of some magical seeds. With only his pet chicken to accompany him, Johnny meets the kind woman who gifts him the seeds which not only allows him to speak to animals, but sends him on a journey to save a stolen Prince. Johnny comes to understand that generosity, empathy, and quiet courage are gifts more precious in this world than power and gold. A good lesson to learn at any age.

“The Polar Express” 30th Anniversary edition, by author Chris Van Allsburg, winner of the 1986 Caldecott Medal for children’s literature. This classic story tells of a young boy who, on Christmas Eve, is welcomed aboard a magical trip to the North Pole. Through dark forests, over tall mountains and across a desert of ice, the Polar Express makes its way to the city on top of the world, where this lucky boy will make his very special Christmas wish.

What better gift to give than a message of hope and magic, most especially needed this time of year.

Merry Christmas to all and a very Happy New Year. Kathy Bazzoli, Book Store Chair, and Josepha Walpen, Co-Chair

NOTES FROM THE BOOK CHAIR

It is Christmas again, that special time of year when we try to find the perfect book for the children (and adult children) in our lives.

Seasons Greetings! I can't believe Christmas is just around the corner. It is my favorite time of year. The colors, the warm spicy smells, twinkling lights-- you know all of those magical Christmas feelings. I was inspired this year by the Victorian era. I wandered about the museum one quiet Tuesday and it just spoke to me. I found some

great things. The fans are one of my favorites. They come with a great story about the language of the fan. A great gift for something that’s a little flirty and fun. The purses are beautiful and similar to the ones we have on display. I also found some great stuffers for the kids. When I was growing up my stocking was my favorite. It was always full of fun and random things. We also have the usual suspects-- Christmas kitchen towels, scarves, our cute little porcelain dolls, and more. Please come by and see what's new; find something for the special people on your list, and if you are a member, take a 10% discount (excluding sale items).

John Clark and Al Derrick- we couldn’t do without them- even though there have been some times when getting to the museum has been a real challenge for them. Well-used backs and knees have a way of making even our most faithful docents take an occasional break, but for now both John and Al are busy taking their docent shifts. We love them for their reliability and even more for their ability to tell fascinating museum stories to the visitors.

John was born in 1934 in England and even though he has lived in America most of his life, the English accent is still one of the first things visitors notice, that and his sparkling sense of humor. In the museum, John’s stories focus on the history of Calistoga as displayed in the dioramas. He says his favorite diorama is the one of Sam Brannan’s spa and resort- the place that started Calistoga. Its perfectly reproduced buildings, gardens, and people illustrate how Calistoga became the town it is today. His favorite story though, is about Ben and Bernice Sharpsteen and how their generosity and creativity gave us the museum we love.

If you can get John away from the museum, he’ll stop and tell you interesting stories about himself. He joined the British Merchant Marines at age 16, then emigrated to Ontario, Canada, to try gold and uranium mining. Deciding to go further south, he drove Route 66 across to California. He says he fell in love with the West Coast, eventually marrying a young woman from Illinois. Together they raised three children in Walnut Creek where he was a TV repairman. He and his wife moved to Calistoga in 2007 where John quickly became indispensable to the museum.

Al Derrick is already well known for his fifteen-year labor of love in the Sharpsteen Museum’s Cottage garden. The brass plaque on the garden gate, “Al’s Garden”, reminds visitors that he is the one primarily responsible for its old-

fashioned beauty, which perfectly matches the Brannan Cottage. Al started learning his gardening techniques by helping in his foster family’s vegetable garden in Knight’s Valley when he was a student in the Calistoga public school system. Later, when he owned a business in Monterey, he also joined the first Master Gardner Club there and wrote for its newsletter as well as for the one in Santa Rosa.

Inside the museum he is a master storyteller. He eagerly reads any histories and biographies that give background on the displays so that he always has interesting new ideas for visitors. One of his favorite stories is of the summer Robert Louis Stevenson and his bride Fanny Osbourne stayed in the abandoned mining camp on Mt. St Helena. He told me the story when I first became a docent and now it’s my favorite as well. He recently handed me a copy of This Life I’ve Loved, a 1937 book by Isobel Field, Fanny’s daughter from her first marriage, who spent many years with the family. As with much of what Al reads, this book adds richness to the stories he can tell about the early residents of Calistoga.

John and Al are worthy custodians of Calistoga history and represent what is best about being a docent. Marilyn Glaim, Docent Chair

As Christmas approaches and the end of 2017 is not far behind, we at the Sharpsteen send our best wishes to our many devoted members and friends. Throughout the year we try to keep you as members updated with changes, additions, and events at the museum, but of course there is always more.

Membership dues, donation, and sales in our gift & bookstore keep us afloat, but many needed projects are left by the wayside. Our project wish list includes repairs, repainting, and refurbishing displays and exhibits; as well as remodeling the carriage house (garage) to create a proper storage facility for our collections, to name only a few.

We ask that you will consider an end-of-the-year gift to assist us in completing these much-needed projects. This gift could also be made in honor or memory of a loved one. Donations in any amount are greatly appreciated, and are tax deductible.

The Sharpsteen Museum is a tax-exempt non-profit 501©(3) organization, tax ID# 94-2639021.

Donations may be sent to P.O. Box 573, Calistoga, CA 94515

We wish you a Happy Holiday Season and an Abundant New Year!
