The Panel went to James O’Shea, owner of James Herren Menswear on Dawson Street on advice regarding
dressing well for an interview. James has been dressing business men for many years and has a wealth of
experience in this area.
Here are the tips from the menswear expert himself:
The first thing I consider when giving advice on how someone should dress for an interview is what type of job
they are applying for?
If it is a position for instance in a bank or accountancy firm then you would guide them differently to someone
applying to maybe Google or an advertising agency where the interviewer may wish to see someone's creative
side.
Formal Interview Attire:
You should wear a dark suit, Navy, Black or Grey.
It should be in good condition and fit you well.
A plain shirt in white or blue makes it easier to select your tie, but if you prefer a striped shirt then wear a plain
coloured tie.
Make sure your shirt is pressed well.
Avoid very bright or loud ties as they can be a distraction to the interviewer.
Shoes should be black leather and polished well and worn with a black belt.
Brown shoes with matching brown belt can also work but black is the safer bet.
Never wear a soft/casual shoe with a suit.
ALWAYS have your shoes polished!

Informal Interview Attire:
A lot of the tips above are valid.
Wear a crisp, open necked shirt (no tie), formal or smart casual.
A dark jacket/blazer with pressed chinos or tailored jeans (make a judgement call on the jeans based on the
company you are interviewing for).
Shoes can be more casual in this instance.

Fit:
Overall the way your clothes fit you and how clean they look is much more important than how expensive they
are. If you go into the interview and look sharp then you will feel more confident and the interviewer sees that you
take pride in your appearance. If there are two candidates being considered then how you look could be THE
deciding factor.
Remember – You never get a second chance to make a first impression!
