Pastor’s Place April 2016God Bless You!

I pray all of you have been doing well. We have made it through winter! I am thankful to the Lord for you and how He is blessing Sharon Baptist Church.

We had a very good month in March. We had wonderful potlucks and times of fellowship. I want to thank everyone who came out. Our Sunday Services have been great and we had very good prayer meetings and Bible studies on Tuesday mornings and Sunday Nights.

I thank all of you who came out and attended the Fish Fry. Your support blessed a very worthy cause and you had great fish. I thank all of you who worked so very hard making the Fish Fry a success. You are appreciated.

This month we had a great time with the Children’s Ministry Day and the items made will be donated to those who are in need. Thank you for all who attended and worked with the kids.

In March we had our Resurrection Sunday celebrations. We had a good Tenebrae Service and we had a public breakfast and activities for the children where we shared the true meaning of “Easter”. We had a good Sunrise service on Resurrection Sunday. Thank you to all who were able to attend and donate time and candy.

We had great youth group meetings in March. Thank you to the Youth Department for your work with our youth.

We are now in April and I remind you to look at your calendars for upcoming events. We will be having our potlucks, men’s breakfast, and Bible studies. If you have any announcement for the bulletin and the screens please tell Alyce Vinson and Melissa Barber the information.

We are hosting the CornerStone Community Spring Concert on April 10th at 6pm with refreshments to follow. This is a very important event for CornerStone ministries. Please come out and support CornerStone. If you wish to make a donation toward the refreshments please let Jane Burch or Elizabeth Barber know.

Sharon Baptist Monthly NewsNow, let us turn our focus to Jesus. After the crucifixion the disciples were really down. They were scared and they were wondering if they were next. They did not seem to understand that three days later Jesus was going to rise from the dead.

After the Resurrection the disciples became Apostles and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and boldness. The resurrection of Jesus Christ truly changed their lives. In the face of persecution, Peter and John answered their persecutors, “Whether it is Pastor’s Place continued ……

right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:19-20)

May you and I be bold enough in the Lord to tell others about Jesus! Jesus died on the cross; shed His blood and then three days later rose from the dead for us. May we share our faith with others; invite them to Church and live in such a way that they would want the faith we have.

God bless you, see you soon.

In Christ,

Pastor James

MUSICALLY SPEAKING… April 2016Musically speaking….Notes from our music ministry ladies. This time of year presents freshness in the air. A sense of anticipation as we look forward to the progress we can make. Humming in our ears are the exchanges we have with people about gardens we will grow, family gathering times we will share, places we will travel to, missions and

Sharon Baptist Monthly Newsprojects we will start; all, creating renewed energy and momentum. I look to ways to inspire, challenge and facilitate an ongoing expansion of our music ministry.

As I think about my recent “engagement” with physical therapy, I recall a rather old looking octogenarian pushing herself along with her exercises, always saying “if you’re standing still, you’re dead!” For me, this was a 2-fold message from above…He does that you know, puts people in your path to hear those things…don’t settle, don’t be content with status quo, plan and work toward making it even better.

I give thanks to our wonderful music committee who has kept us all connected to our music ministry and done a great job providing songs and hymns and special music for our worship service. As I reported to our quarterly business meeting, we have 11 current groups and/or soloists that have participated, sharing their great gifts with us.

At this writing, I can say, we introduced a change to our praise songs, pulling out less traditional hymns to trying newer songs. I’m sure it will take our congregation a few Sundays to connect; even our band, choir and other groups have to sing a song 8-12 times before the “truth” within the songs is written on our hearts. Many have looked forward to a time when we would sing using the displays for our lyrics and my hope is that this only adds to our experiences and reflections during Sunday mornings.

Hard not to notice, but the drums from Sticks and Strings band have found a new space to occupy in our sanctuary. As they are a regular part of our monthly worship, it seemed a good idea to give them a good home and yet, not interfere with baptisms or other events that happen or times when we want to focus on the pulpit! Many thanks to Jesse and Steve for the work to accomplish this.

We ARE looking forward to the return of our Sanctuary choir. They are busy preparing several new anthems for Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and beyond. They are hoping to take a song from the Christmas cantata to be able to participate with the Emergency Ministries concert, here at Sharon on Sunday, April 10th at 6pm.

I have been so encouraged by the many, cards, calls and visits from our church family during my recent recovery from back pain. I thank you for being in my life and reminding me to keep putting my faith and trust in God. (Psalm 147:11) “He delights in those who put their hope in His unfailing love.”

Enjoying the buoyancy of the New Year,Lynne Buker

Multimedia Committee

Sounding Off…notes from Multimedia, Chris White, ChairNavigating the challenges and accomplishments of our new sound system, we are not boastful, but rather prideful of the great new things we have introduced into our Sunday morning worship time. With the help of Pastor Sevon and the musical director, we used the displays for both the

Sharon Baptist Monthly NewsChildren’s Christmas play and Christmas candlelight service. Earlier this year, we started posting the sermon scriptures during the sermon and later, scrolling announcements and notes before the service. In March with our Lent and pre-Easter activities we were able to begin using the displays for songs and hymns during the worship service.

We’ve had some great positive feedback about the improvement in the sound; we augmented this with both the purchase of wireless microphones and recently a piano ‘pick-up’ to aid in amplification throughout the sanctuary.

We are pleased to note that the old sound board was taken down to the Fellowship Hall to provide for some great music during our Seniors Saints luncheon. Right now, we are investigating the purchase of a rolling cart to be able to store both board and speakers downstairs for future use.

We’re happy to report that we have already had two training sessions to improve our knowledge and operation of the system.

The committee met in February to review our status and discussed the idea of mounting a camera to the display in the back, to be able to record the weekly sermons. We also discussed the need for using an external hard drive or some other “storage” program to back up files and safe space on the computer.

We want to implement a two-person sound/computer system schedule for the weekly services and are asking for more of our church folks to volunteer to help out. As we have seen, the system is pretty easy to operate and can be learned in a few weeks.

The committee will meet again in April, please think about joining us. We will be thinking about plans for our first fundraiser. Our grateful thanks to those who continue to contribute to this project; whether with their time or just feedback or dollars…it’s all good!

Sharon Baptist Monthly NewsOperation Christmas Child 2016It's time to start collecting again for OCC. I'll make suggestions for the month and the box will be under the back table. A good time to get some great deals is after holidays--Valentine's, Easter, Halloween, etc. It doesn't have to be Christmas stuff because the kids might not get these boxes for 6 months, and do not know what the Christmas things are anyway. Don't wait till fall to start---collect all year so more boxes will reach more kids for God's kingdom! Make sure EVERY ITEM is NEW. If you buy something that needs batteries, please send batteries along. If you send a flattened ball, make sure to send a pump. You are more than welcome to give me money to help with shipping at any time. Please remember the 5-9 year olds get the most shoeboxes. Try to concentrate on the 2-4 yr. old AND the 10-14 yr. olds.

NO used items, food of any kind (chocolate, meds, vitamins), liquids, breakables (snow globes, glass containers), camo toys or clothes, toy guns, knives, army men, aerosol cans.

On a personal note--how about a note and a family picture for your shoebox recipient? They would love to see who loved them enough to do something like this just for them! Lastly---PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. For the workers, the people that pack shoeboxes, the shoeboxes, and the kids that will get the shoeboxes.
