GENERAL MANAGER'S NOTE

Friends,May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and opportunity for all of us to honor, recognize and learn more about the history and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Asian immigrants haven't always been welcomed with open hearts and minds. KBTC has told the very important story of Tacoma's history with Chinese American immigrants in the documentary Of Race and Reconciliation. In 1885, the Chinese residents of Tacoma were forcefully expelled from the city amid a backdrop of growing anti-Chinese sentiment in the region and beyond. It's a hard look back at our own history, but it's one that KBTC felt it had a responsibility to tell. I hope you spend time this month with the Asian Pacific American history specials available for you to view both on air and as free PBS streaming content.

Available on the PBS video app this month: • Asian Americans A five-hour film series casts a new lens on U.S. history and the ongoing role that Asian Americans have played.• American Experience: Mr. Tornado The remarkable story of Ted Fujita, whose groundbreaking work in research and applied science saved thousands of lives.• American Masters: Amy Tan: Un intended Memoir An intimate portrait of the groundbreaking writer that interweaves archival imagery, animation, and original interviews to tell the inspiring story of Tan’s life and career.

And don't forget you can explore Japanese culture and lifestyle on NHK World! Your support makes all of this possible. Thank you.
