STUNNING REEFS ● SHARKS ● DOLPHINS ● AND MORE…

SIMPLY THE BEST WITH MAGNUS LUNDGRENJoin us on a “special” trip where we spend time around the best places the Red Sea have to offer. We look for up to seven species of sharks, and explore stunning reefs, caverns and wrecks, and for schools of dolphins and indian mackerels, and maybe even a dugong. Learn more about photography with Magnus in the warm blue water of the Red Sea.

BEST TIME TO LOOK FOR SHARKS!Prime time. Magnus have visited the Red Sea for more than three decades, and tried out all twelve months of the year, and October and November is for sure his favourite time in the southern Red Sea. Magnus says “There is always something really spectacular happening and I know with the itinerary for this trip there is so much potential. We will get a lot of photography and diving experiences out of a relatively short time at a very affordable price. I can’t wait to go!”Shark action. During these months the water is still warm, but not to warm, which allows some of the major predators to approach the coral reefs. It is peak season for the fascinating oceanic whitetip shark, which shows up around the off-shore reefs. At the same time, we have great chances to meet scalloped hammerheads, silky sharks, thresher sharks, grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks. I even have had curious silvertips over Elphinstone’s south plateau for several days. Rumour says that last few years also presented some tigers, which is a shark I never have seen in the Red Sea… yet.Oceanic whitetip sharks. Once upon a time, not so long ago, the Oceanic whitetip was widespread and the most common large animal in our warm oceans. Today it is almost fished to extinction and the Red Sea is one of very few places where divers can see them regularly. All the dives we do on the trip will be “unbaited” dives, and there is of course no guarantee that sharks will show up. But we have a great chance, and we will try to give ourselves the best chances possible for some great photographic possibilities.

RED SEA MARVELSDolphins, caverns, and stunning reefs. Red Sea always delivers great sunlight, clear water quality and vibrant reefs. So along with these great predatory vistas described above, we hope to mix in a visit to a reef known for dolphin encounters, and get some quality time spent around amazing sun-loving reefs, dramatic cavern openings and swarming marine life. Your wide angle lens will love the classic Red Sea scenery with clouds of orange anthias swarming around vibrant soft corals with a back drop of endless hard coral, all draped in a high saturated blue ocean. Magnus says “These reefs are basically made for wide angle photography”.What if… If the sharks do show up and pose for our cameras (no guarantees), then we will maximise our opportunities and stay put where the action is. It may change our overall plan. If the shark-action is not “up to par”, then we will focus on shooting other great photogenic subjects. Like southern Egypt special coral kingdom, the resident school of spinner dolphin around Fury Shoals, or the scenic landscape and caverns in the same area usually flooded with spectacular light beams. Or Marsa Shouna with the many green turtles and schooling striped mackerels. There (maybe, maybe, maybe) will be a dugong waiting for us out on the turtle grass field… In short, we will be busy what ever is going on.

HANDPICKED LOCATIONS - PART IWe have carefully planned and picked the locations of this trip making sure we visit some of the most spectacular marine parks in the Red Sea and use our time in the best possible way.

The Brothers is two famous islands that is connected to an underwater mountain range that rise from the depths of the Red Sea. These islands are included in a marine national park, located roughly 90 kms from the coastline. Famous for great walls, dazzling soft coral gardens and huge forests of gorgonians and rich pelagic and reef fish life. We look for oceanics and some stretches have regular grey reef shark patrols. There is a descent chance for scalloped hammerhead, threshers, silkies, silvertip, whitetip reefies and mantas as well. At Big Brother there are two wrecks, the Aida II, an Egyptian supply vessel and Numidia, a freight vessel that all dressed in soft coral colours.

Daedalus reef is sometimes called Abu el-Kizan, and it is a smaller area and more isolated than the Brothers. It is much further out from Egypt’s coastline. The reef is packed with life and offer fantastic diving with an extraordinary hard coral carpet. Here we have the same chance to see sharks and other pelagic life like around Brothers. Barracudas, hammers, threshers, tuna, mackerels and even filter feeders like mantas and whale sharks may pass by out here. Daedalus have a famous field of anemones and clownfishes rated to hold the same caliber as Anemone City at Ras Mohammed.

HANDPICKED LOCATIONS - PART IIElphinstone reef may actually be a very easy dive, if you stick to the sparkling walls on the east or west side. This is the perfect option for the casual diver. The plateau-dives, north and south, can also be calm as a bathtub, but more often howling in strong currents giving divers an adrenalin rush. The north plateau is the home for grey and whitetip reef sharks and scalloped hammerheads. On the south plateau the oceanics are more frequently seen.Sataya reef is a part of the Fury Shoals reef complex. Around the horseshoe-shaped Sataya we have a good chance to get close to one of the world's most intelligent and playful ocean mammals. A large group of spinner dolphins live there. If they are about, we snorkel and/or free dive with them. Our plan B, or part of the day plan, is a visit to some great caverns around Fury Shoals with perfect formations for dramatic sunlit images with a diver modelling in the shots.

Marsa Shouna is another great stop we “might” do at on this trip, time permitting. This is a great bay for photography, both the reef and the turtle grass field. Our target here are the many green turtles, amazing schools of indian mackerels and there is a dugong that is showing up here “once in a while”.

Other locations. If there for any reason is a hot location within our reach and we encounter slow action, we might tweak the program if we think it will give us better conditions, marine life encounters or safety.

PRELIMINARY ITINERARY

The autumn is such a great time and the overall goal for this trip and workshop is to visit stunning coral gardens and to mix in the best marine life encounters we may find.

Day 1 Flying to Hurghada and checking in on the boat (no diving)Day 2 & 3 Brother IslandsDay 4 Daedalus reefDay 5 Sataya reef & Fury shoals cavernsDay 6 Elphinstone reefDay 7 Marsa Shouna (2-3 dives last day)Day 8 Fly back to Sweden

Each trip is a little different, and we like to tweak it on location if some sites are delivering extra hot encounters and good conditions. The trip might reverse the intinerary depending on where the boat is situated before departure.

Please also note that there will be days when we offer 3 long dives per day, instead of 4 dives, because of longer travel times between some sites. These days have a calm pace, and we have to weigh in shorter autumn days. On locations needed we avoid the risk of night diving with oceanics as well as it is not allowed to do night dives in the marine parks. This trip is suitable for reasonably experienced divers who are capable of diving in open water with a curious shark.

📸 WIDE ANGLE WORKSHOP & LEARNINGThis trip is mainly a wide angle trip. There are of course macro subjects in the Red Sea, but our main focus of the teaching is on wide angle and action photography side.

The teaching part the Red Sea Workshop is focused on the photographic opportunities of the sites we are diving. You may expect presentations covering:

Cavern and coral reefs with a model - Shark photography - Peak of actionUnbaited shark diving - Photographing dolphins

Magnus goal is to have the talks during the day between the dives to make evenings more relaxed and free for downloading media, and various camera and image fixing. If time allows it we also do image review sessions and some post processing tips. Evenings are for inspiration and looking forward to the next day.
