Central  idea:    Human  actions  impact  the  sustainability  of  the  Earth’s  resources  and  the  environment.

Lines  of  Inquiry:

-‐    How  people  depend  on  natural  resources  in  their  daily  lives.    -‐    The  consequences  of  our  actions  towards  our  environment.

-‐    Our  role  in  sustaining  natural  resources.

Language Arts:

The students will read nonfiction passages related to the unit. They will also analyze magazine articles that deal with environmental topics. In writing, the students will use the expository and procedural forms in order to persuade and report. As in grammar, they will identify nouns such as common/proper and singular/plural nouns. The students will continue to explore long vowel sounds to master their basic phonics.

 Mathematics:

The students will explore the following strands: Measurement: They will use a pan balance to weigh different objects. Pattern and function: They will learn the properties of subtraction. Numbers: The students will explore various methods to subtract numbers mentally. Data Handling: They will collect data during class activities and organize them in bar graph.

Our  science  focus  for  this  unit  will  help  students:

*recognize  that  natural  resources  are  finite  and  need  to  be  conserved.

*identify  their  responsibility  in  reducing  waste  to  sustain  Earth’s  resources.

*recognize  the  ways  in  which  waste  can  be  reduced.    *assess  the  impact  of  recycling  on  the  environment.    *evaluate  the  benefits  and  hazards  of  the  different  waste  management  processes  (dumps,  landfills,  incinerators,  recycling,  reusing,  reducing).

In  social  studies  the  students  will  identify  the  impact  of  waste  management  on  the  environment.  They  will  also  recognize  and  or  demonstrate  how  personal  choices  affect  the  sustainment  of  the  natural  resources.
