A NOTE from Pastor Kyle Climb to the top of the highest mountain, Joyous tidings proclaim to the world, Lift up your voice, Shout the good news: Behold, your Lord comes to you. — Climb to the Top of the Highest Mountain by Carolyn Jennings

We have been on quite a mountain climb over these past few weeks, and I know there have been many moments when I have felt like shouting good news. How about you? We have received the Christmas proclamation that our God comes in surprising and grace-filled ways. There is no better news than the announcement that Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, comes to us in grace and truth. And oh how we have been able to experience the glory of God through worship in our new sanctuary! These past few Sundays, I have simply wondered at the giftedness of our members and friends in our music ministry.

Prayer and word offered so beautifully is such an act of grace. Jesus, the hidden, holy one, has been powerfully present in our midst, and it has been a joy to draw together with so many of our church family and friends to celebrate the birth of Christ and our beginning

in our new Gathering Place location. God is so generous in his gifts to us.

What a way to prepare for a year of "new things" that God will be doing in, through, and among us! I can't wait to see how the Lord will inspire people in ministry. There will be challenges, but I have already been thrilled by the visions of ministry and mission that people have been sharing. I have already witnessed people making new connections and meeting new people. I believe we will grow closer and stronger together as God's spirit builds up the body of St. Andrew. So, share the joyous tidings. Shout the good news! Jesus

Christ has come and lives among us! Let us prepare to join in the new things he is doing.

In Christ,

Rev. Kyle Otterbein,

Associate Pastor

Interim Senior Pastor Search Update

Dear Friends and Members of St. Andrew:

A few weeks ago, we sent a congregation-wide message explaining the process for hiring an interim pastor while St. Andrew begins the lengthy process of seeking a new called

senior pastor (http://bit.ly/2kRw4qc).

We now happily report that the Session has unanimously selected the Rev. Daniel “Danie” deBeer to serve in that important transitional role. Danie’s (pronounced “Donny”) pastoral career has shown him to be a hope-filled motivator who can grasp the complexity of St. Andrew’s recent history while

helping us develop into the congregation God is calling us to be.

Danie’s references describe him as “a grown up,” “someone who has seen it all,” “you name it, he has dealt with it at some point already.” Former staff members described how he helped heal divisions among their congregations. Colleagues told how he could find connections with the most cantankerous of members

and yet still be able to “speak the truth in love.”

Such comments bring to mind the advice the Apostle Paul gave concerning leadership issues in the church in Ephesus: “Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each

part does its work.” (Ephesians 4:15-16).

With a career that includes ministering in churches ranging between 50 and 2,000 members, Danie’s spiritual maturity comes from the wide variety of ministry experience he has

encountered since being ordained in 1981.

His most recent experience as an interim pastor has been two years leading the 400-member Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church in Oak Park, Illinois. Over the past four decades, however, he also has served as interim executive presbyter, chaplain in the South African army, family minister, senior pastor, and lecturer in Hebrew at Pretoria University. As a member of the Commission on Ministry for the Presbytery of Great Rivers, he served for 12

years as liaison to various churches in pastoral transition.

“You have no idea how interested I am to serve St. Andrew,” Danie wrote in an email to the search committee. “The opportunities for ministry keep me awake at night — and not only the 'gathering and pulling together of the flock,' but also expanding and reaching out to the unreached, as St. Andrew

settles in the beautiful new sanctuary.”

Danie and his wife Annette already have been able to join St. Andrew for worship. They attended both services on December 17, when our congregation hosted its first Sunday in our new building at 140 Gathering Place Lane. Over the next few

weeks he will make trips to Iowa City to meet with staff and begin the process of transition. He already has begun studying our InDirectory to make sure he is matching faces and

names.

Danie's first scheduled day as interim pastor is February 26. His contract with the Session is for one year,

with the option to renew.

Born in what is now Namibia and ordained in South Africa, Danie also will contribute to the global perspective of St. Andrew’s ministry. He has a Masters in Theology from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, a Doctorate in Ministry from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Virginia, and a Certificate in Executive

Leadership from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.

Danie said he fully supports St. Andrew’s new wedding policy and statement of inclusion. His resume is available at http://www.saintandrew-ic.org/about/interim-pastor-search and many of his sermons from this summer are available at http://

fairoakspres.org/sermons/.

If you have any questions about Danie — or about the search process for a senior pastor — let us know. Although our denomination gives Sessions full discretion in the hiring of an interim pastor, the calling of St. Andrew’s next long-term

senior pastor will require a vote by the congregation.

In the meantime, please keep Danie and Annette in your

prayers as they make plans to move to the Iowa City area.

In Christ,

The Interim Pastor Search Team

Guatemala Reflections by Kathi Anderson

In less than three years, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church has sent teams to Guatemala to support Impacto Ministries four times, and we have another team going in March 2018 (spots still available – see Karna Wieck)! That’s 63 St. Andrew members, plus 22 friends from area churches, who have served alongside some amazing fulltime, Guatemalan missionaries in the small, impoverished villages around the beautiful Lake Atitlan area. In the December Messenger, we highlighted some of Impacto’s primary ministries, but here, members of our teams share what those ministries have meant to them!

Going to Guatemala as a family was an amazing experience. We definitely received more than we gave. Kelsey and Erika both were particularly touched by the trip and want to do more missions work in the future. While we hope that we were able to spread God’s love while we were there, many of the children and Abuelitos touched our hearts. We just hung three ornaments on our Christmas tree from Guatemala, reminding us of how God can work through all people no matter what language they speak or how much they have to give. – Laura Frey-Law, March 2015

Prior to our trip, my daughters had already been to Guatemala with another team. They were the ones who invited me to come the next year. Impacto programs focus on Guatemalan children, fostering

both their physical and spiritual health, but Impacto leaders also have a heart for missionary children. It was only natural for my children to want to come back a second year. The teens on our trip were ready and enthusiastic about jobs from fundraising to packing to medical supply distribution. It was a privilege to see them play and grow and pray outside their comfort zones. The adults on the team had an eye for excellence. Everyone came with unique professional gifts (health care, counseling, teaching), and the leaders were organized! The Impacto staff set the tone with well organized travel arrangements, local translators, and Christ-centered encouragement. It was a pleasure to work together as a team.

– Chris Charis-Donelson, July 2017

Our family has been blessed by our connection to Impacto Ministries in many ways. Tim and I were able to hear Pastor Luis and Dinora speak during their visit to St. Andrew in 2014,

which inspired us to think of ourselves as part of a global community of Christians who need to encourage one another. At the time, we couldn't arrange to go on a trip, but we were honored to offer prayer and financial support. Fast forward to March 2016 - Cade, who was 10 years old, and I were able to go on a spring break trip to work with Impacto. I love to travel internationally, as it really helps me to look beyond my personal walls and borders and recognize God's love is for all peoples and tribes. The Guatemalan people are very welcoming and hospitable and helped me take my Spanish language skills to the next level. For Cade, it was an introduction to the idea that people who look differently, live differently, and don't understand each other's spoken language are all God's people at heart and can speak through the language of love and service to each other. Whether we were doing a medical clinic or teaching a Bible lesson to the Happy Tummies kids, we received as much love and blessing as we gave. We are all planning to go back. We love the idea of building relationships with our Christian brethren and being a blessing while we are also blessed by their faith, prayers, and love. – Becky Benson, March 2016, July 2017

I think one of my favorite memories from the July trip was the Happy Tummies kids getting fluoride applied. It was fun watching our youth pantomime how to open their mouths and then intently make sure they were covering all the tooth surfaces, and it was rewarding to know that we were doing something to hopefully prevent a health problem in the first

place. – Cecilia Norris, March 2015 & 2016, July 2017

In this picture, Sam Anderson was helping me give medicine to a woman and her kids. Becca and Hope (interns from Indiana) were doing the same, and a couple of people were praying with others while they waited. – Jon Swearingen, July 2017

I feel fortunate to have been able to make repeat visits to Guatemala. I also feel like I'm still learning and growing from our experiences there. One of my favorite times on this past trip was when we were in the small mountain village Panybar. My "job" this day was open ended, filling in where and how the group ended up needing help as we ran a medical clinic. At one point, I ended up praying with families as they waited for their medicines at the end of their visit. During this time, I was humbled to briefly sit with Juanita's family, who lives in a quite modest house just down the hill from where our clinic was based, and pray. I was thankful to get to watch Kathi use her physical therapy skills to help a man suffering from diabetic complications on crutches in need of repair. I was privileged to get to watch Sam with her new friends she had spent the past few weeks with making kids smile. I was also humored as a brave translator attempted to translate a song I was using to help keep a youngster occupied as they waited. Looking back, it's ironic that all these favorite moments occurred in a passageway that could fairly be called dark and dank - and a great reminder that there is no place that

God's love doesn't reach! – Mike Anderson, March 2015 & 2016, July 2017

As a nurse, I had always wanted to work at a medical clinic serving Native Americans, and in July I got the opportunity to work with the Mayan population in Guatemala. Our St. Andrew medical mission trip was a

wonderful experience for me, seeing another culture and working alongside that culture with some of my dearest friends from my church family. The country itself is filled with vibrant color, and the people are warm and friendly. Many live with so very little, yet seem happy. Visitors to our clinics may have never seen a doctor before, or only on rare occasions. Doctors did their best to provide care that was compassionate, yet cautious in that most patients won't see a health professional again for a long time or may not have access to medication refills.

I formed a friendship with several of our interpreters, most notably Gabby, who worked beside me most days. We didn't always know the right words to use, and she had trouble with

some of the Mayan dialects, but gestures and best guesses worked to our advantage most of the time. She shared a proud moment recently on Facebook as her beloved daughter celebrated her first communion, and it was an honor to be able to offer blessings to her and her daughter.

An elderly woman who came to one of our mountain clinics was a great example to me of a woman of faith. She had been diagnosed at some previous time with diabetes and had not had access to healthcare for years. She said her faith kept her strong, but she decided it wouldn't hurt to get a little help from the clinic while it was in town. Praying with people like her was another unforgettable part of the trip, as was our visit to a family's home in one of the mountain villages. Then there was Jesus, who served as one of our interpreters. He took time to write each of us a personal note with a Bible verse included. He said it helped him practice his English, but he gave us so much more in that thoughtful gesture.

The staff of Impacto Ministries in Guatemala are definitely God's hands at work in the world. They do so much with so little, and are bringing the message of God's love and salvation through Jesus to a remote, yet beautiful, region of a country not so very far from our own.

This mission trip was an unforgettable experience for me. My prayer is that we were able to touch the lives of the people we met and show them God was at work in our lives and theirs by sharing some of the gifts & talents we've been given. Whether I have an opportunity to return to Guatemala or not, a piece of my heart will be there with my friend Gabby and others I met, and in memories of sunrise and sunset over Lake Atitlan, Guatemala—a poor country in standards of living, but rich in the blessings of love, compassion, culture, and generosity of spirit. Praise be to God! - Patti Benson, July 2017

The list above is only a small sample of all the new things we have at 140 Gathering Place Lane. As we move forward with using the new space in this new year, we’re already experiencing a new existence together. And it’s happening while we remain rooted in Christ (Colossians 2:6-7). We are rooted in our identity with Christ and what God has been doing, is doing, and will continue to do in and through the people who are St. Andrew. For instance, the Atrium we now enjoy allowed for space for a Christmas “photo booth”. In talking to Heather Woodin, our Director of Children’s and Family Ministry, what struck her the most about the booth was that people who did not know each other before were helping each other take the photos and becoming acquainted. This new way of being St. Andrew provided a new way to respond to God’s call

to develop new relationships.

And how about that Hospitality & Welcome Team with the rolling kiosks to greet visitors? These kiosks are a wonderful tool to help us welcome people for worship. There were over 600 people in worship at the 5:00 pm service on Christmas Eve, many of which had not been to a service at St. Andrew before, regardless of where St. Andrew was located. What an opportunity this is to develop new relationships with people who may never have been to any church before and to share the grace

found by worshiping together that Pastor Kyle talks about in his Note on page 2.

When thinking about what to write for this article, I could not let go of a verse from Isaiah 43. God says through the prophet, “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. (Isaiah 43:19). Later in Revelation 21, John records Jesus saying, “See, I am making all things new.” We don’t know everything God is doing right now in this new space, and sometimes it may feel like we are still in the wilderness or in a desert, but from Isaiah to Revelation (and throughout scripture), God promises us he is making things new wherever his people are gathered. So as we learn to live into this space and welcome our new Interim Senior Pastor, Rev. DeBeers, let’s be sure to continue what Pastor Kyle has already

noticed is happening, which is to contemplate what other new things we perceive God is calling forth here at Gathering Place Lane.

Prayer Ministry: Grace by Anne Dierking

People who know me well know that I love words. I was raised by two educators who also loved words and proper use of the language. So, it was not a huge surprise when a word crept into my head and make its home there sometime in early November. That word is GRACE. Grace is something we speak of, maybe even study and think we know what it means. Then we realize we have only a small sliver of understanding. The verse I refer to is 2 Corinthians 12:9 - My grace is sufficient for you for power is made perfect in weakness. Think about it. Grace appears to be a gift given by God to ALL of His children. There is nothing we can do to earn it, it is simply there when we need it. Now, dig a little deeper and con-sider who His children are. I happen to believe we are all born as a Child of God and, as such, He wants all of us to share His kingdom someday. Now, how Grace fits in is not totally clear but what is clear to me is that God’s will will not give up on even one of us. GRACE! What a lovely word! Perhaps you have a word ready to appear in your head. Open the way to it and see where it goes!

May your hearts be filled with true thanks for the gifts of GOD which are always good!

My Stephen Minister: A Trustworthy Friend I was at a point where I needed someone to talk to about the struggles in my life. Trusting someone with personal information about my life was something I feared at first, but my pastor recommended that I meet with a Stephen Minister. He reassured me that

everything was confidential.

Soon after meeting my Stephen Minister, I quickly sensed I could trust him. Part of that trust came from knowing he was trained to help people through their problems. He made me feel comfortable by not prying for information, but instead just letting me share what was on my mind. Any questions he did ask fit our conversation appropriately. Probably the best thing he did for me was not judging me for my past decisions;

rather, he was there to help me move forward.

I think another significant trust-building factor was being able to talk with someone who was not in my regular circle of friends. My friends certainly continued to have a very important place in my life, but I also needed someone who could see me objectively. That helped make it easier to share personal parts of my life. Also, knowing my Stephen Minister would be there for me “next week” (we usually met for an hour each week) gave me confidence. I see now how much I needed regular encouragement as I rode the roller

coaster of emotions that came during this period of instability in my life.

I really appreciated our times together. Our weekly visits were more than just meeting to talk. They also helped keep me accountable between times, to carry through with the changes I said I wanted to make. My Stephen Minister often went out of his way to help me in

my struggle. (Condensed by Mary Beth Ross from reprint by Stephen Ministries St. Louis with permission.)

Amy Wilson Nicholson, along with the Iowa City A.M. Rotary Club and the University of Iowa Community Credit Union, are hosting a fun event this January. Let’s join them in supporting two great causes – Table to Table and Domestic Violence.

Cabin Fever Team Trivia Night Friday, January 12, 7:00 pm Held at the Clarion Highlander Hotel and Conference Center, 2525 North Dodge Street, Iowa City.

There will be a cash bar and light snacks will be provided.

Teams may consist of up to eight players. Registration is $105.00 per team or $15.00 per person. To register, go to the home page of the Iowa City A.M. Rotary Club. Their website is www.icamrotary.org - scroll down to

Registration. You can choose to register online by January 10 (processing fees apply) or mail in a completed registration form by Janaury 5 (no processing fees with mail in applications). On each application you may sign up a team or reserve a seat at an open table (and later be randomly placed with other individuals to form a team).

Prizes are: 1st place $160.00, 2nd place $80.00, and 3rd place $40.00.

I plan on attending. My trivia skills are limited (so if yours are, too, don’t let that stop you!) but I love the idea of a fun night to help two great causes. Let’s form some teams and support Amy, the Iowa City A.M. Rotary Club, and the University of Iowa Credit Union in their endeavors to help our community. Please call me with questions. (Home: 319/333.1093; Cell: 858/353.8818) Thank you!

Save the date for tacos and a good cause!

Sunday, January 28, following the 11:00 service, the Spring Guatemala Team will be hosting a taco lunch to raise money for their trip. So, come on by the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR), enjoy the food, and learn more about how God is making all things new through the Spring Guatemala Team.
