NOTES FROM TOM
The older I become the more I am aware of my need
for quiet time, those instances when I open my heart
and my mind to God. Quiet time goes by many
names—meditation, reflection, prayer, being still, in-
ward looking, outward looking, time to myself, time
outdoors.
Even though this time of contemplation is given dif-
ferent names, it is characterized by one language. I
call it heart language. It is the language which occurs
when we remove the boundaries and filters, the cam-
ouflage and walls we build around our hearts to pro-
tect ourselves. Heart language is when we express to
God what it is like to be us—just as we are, with all
our hurts and stresses, our pains and joys, our warts
and all.
Sometimes this heart language takes the form of actu-
al spoken words, sometimes it is “sighs too deep for
words” (Romans 8: 26), sometimes it is a painting or
a dance, sometimes a song or a poem. But it is always
from the heart.
For me, the heart language I find myself most often
using is that of music. There have been times in my
life when words have failed to convey the depth or
scope of my heart. I’ve found myself going to the pi-
ano to express the seemingly inexpressible content of
my heart. And I am convinced that God understands
not only my language, but the heart language of each
of us.
Why am I becoming more aware of my need for quiet
time? I’m finding I need to be able to talk to God not
only in times of crisis and anxiety and stress, but in
ordinary days and in the common time. The wonder
of quiet time is that I am not limited to only one dia-
lect of this language of the heart. I can learn ever new
dialects which speak from the heart.
James Montgomery, a Moravian journalist and
hymnwriter, said it this way in 1818:
Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire, unuttered
or expressed,
The motion of a hidden fire that trembles in the
breast.
Prayer is the burden of a sigh, the falling of a
tear,
The upward glancing of an eye, when none but
God is near.
Prayer is the simplest form of speech that
infant lips can try;
Prayer, the sublimest strains that reach the
Majesty so nigh.
Prayer is the church’s glorious song, our task
and joy supreme;
We name our Lord in every tongue, and praise
is all our theme.
Keep singing (and praying)! See you in worship—

After studying theatre performance at “The Acting Studio of Hamburg” in Germany, Lucie wrote, produced, and performed for four years throughout Northern Germany the one-women musical “Gabrielle’s Universe” (about a delightfully neurotic secretary who marries her typewriter in search of true love). Lucie then spent five years on the road writing and recording her original album, “It Goes Without Words,” and creating her soon-to-be-released book of poetry “Schmetterlingsfuesse” (Butterfly-feet). Her travels have taken her to Sardegna, Corosica, Majorca, Andualucia, The Greek Islands, Zanzibar, Morocco, New York, San Francisco, Aus-tralia, New Zealand, and now Hawaii. Influenced by Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Jewel, Eva Cassidy, Ben Harper, and Jack Johnson, Lucie uses her voice as her primary instrument, with her travel- guitar “Martin” strumming along wherever her voice may take us. Lucie is here to share her joy and love for music. Come with an open heart, bring along someone you’d love to share a unique experience with, and spend an intimate evening of music, poetry, and improve with old friends and new. The experience will linger long after the doors have closed.
