TRACY DINELLE IS TRYING TO MAKE THE BEST of a bad situation. Yet, in facing her own problems, this Soo resident is also trying to ease the burden of others with similar problems of their own. Tracy is a Stage 4 breast cancer patient receiving treatment at Sault Area Hospital. Diagnosed in 2012, she en- dured an aggressive regime of chemotherapy and radiation and last January she underwent surgery to remove both breasts and some lymph nodes as well. Then, in August, she learned of a massive cancerous growth on her liver. Although she has re- sponded very well to her ordeal, she probably faces ongoing treatment for the rest of her life. It didn’t take long for her realize that the fight against her breast cancer is not only a fight for her life, it’s also horribly ex- pensive – and in ways one might not expect. Some things like wigs and other accessories might not be covered by OHIP, leav- ing the patient to face the financial burden alone. And perhaps the sharp, pointy edge of that burden lies with the costs of sim- ply showing up for one’s treatments: the cost of repeated, fre- quent use of the hospital parking lot. Since she was first diagnosed in 2012, Tracy has been a fre- quent visitor to that parking lot. Her treatment regime forced her to quit her job at the Algoma District School Board so the money coming in wasn’t keeping up with the money going out. At $5 each time – sometimes twice a day, it all adds up quickly. “Sometimes we would have to go there twice a day because I would be scheduled maybe for a test later on that afternoon.” she tells us, adding that although her husband Dennis and her mother Rena Ross have been invaluable in their support on many fronts, the costs still mount up. “My mother would take me to the hospital and then my husband would come up after work so, sometimes, it was $10 a day.” she adds grimly. “Espe- cially when going through treatments, I noticed we weren’t the only ones looking for change (for parking).” November 19, 2015 Issue 1,018 $1.00 Serving St. Joseph Island since 1995 Visit us online at www.islandclippings.com Tel: 705 246-1635 email: [email protected] Fax: 705 246-7060 Connecting our Community Office: 705-942-6000 A PART OF YOUR COMMUNITY Northern Advantage Continued on next page Sharing ‘Tracy’s Dream’ Although most hospitals and medical centres offer monthly parking rates, that’s still an expensive alternative. back to dumping the parking costs squarely into the lap ofthe patients.

That’s when ‘‘Tracy’s Dream’’ was born. It’s really quite sim-ple: with the assistance of Sault Area Hospital, Tracy has cre-ated a special fund designed to offer financial assistance forextended parking costs at the Algoma District Cancer Clinicto other cancer patients. To qualify for assistance, eligible pa-tients must be undergoing treatments multiple times perweek for an extended period. “If you are receiving chemo orradiation, you just have to let me know.” she tells us. “Withradiation you usually go every day and we are going to helpyou out.”

Ironically, Tracy herself, having now completed her latestround of intensive treatments, does not qualify for the fundshe created! She still visits the hospital regularly for weeklyprogress checkups on her chemotherapy, monthly shots andblood tests.

Although ‘Tracy’s Dream’ went ‘live’ on Facebook in January,Tracy herself was occupied with undergoing and recoveringfrom her breast surgery. As she picked up from that however,so too did her ‘dream’. Local newspapers and the CBC caughton and provided valuable coverage. Donations started com-ing in and ‘Tracy’s Dream’ began getting quite some attentionthrough fundraising events like ‘Quack Cancer’, a joint effortwith the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA in which ducks could be‘purchased’ in the name of a loved one who had succumbedto the disease, or was celebrating being a cancer survivor. Theducks were then released in the ‘Y’ pool, followed by a me-morial service.

Tracy is overwhelmed by the response from her community.“Everyone has been so generous!” she marvels. “We’re solucky to live in this area, where so many people are affectedby cancer … and that affects everyone else in their lives. Wehope to someday raise enough money to help everyone whomust face this disease and the costs of fighting it.”

To date, ‘Tracy’s Dream’ has raised over $15,000 and they’reshooting for more. ‘Tracy’s Dream’ now has its own websiteand email address to help spread the word further. Then, there’s always the ‘personal’ element. The indomitable Ms.Dinelle’s positive determination, coupled with her generous, outgoing personality easily attracts new friends from all di-rections, especially at the Cancer Clinic.

One day a while back, she happened to meet and chat in theclinic waiting room with a lady from St. Joseph Island whowas there with her husband, who was also undergoing treat-ment. Since that first meeting, Tracy has become fast friendswith Dana and Wilfred Stevens. They now see each other fre-quently, both in and outside of the Clinic.

“Tracy is an amazing woman – a fighter who doesn’t knowhow to quit.” says Dana. “With all that she’s had to face, shestill cares so much about helping others.” As with so manyothers, ‘Tracy’s Dream’ has reached out to touch Dana andWilfred and they too are now avid supporters. Like Tracy,Dana and Wilfred won’t qualify for assistance either as hiscondition has improved …. and they’re pretty glad aboutthat!

Dana has been busy placing donation cans for ‘Tracy’sDream’ at several locations throughout the Island. With somany cancer survivors, current patients and those who havelost loved ones right here at home, there’s sure to be lots ofsympathetic folks living among us. These people too, knowhow quickly parkingexpenses can add upto a debilitating fi-nancial burden. So ifyou see one of thecans, please givewhatever you can, tohelp other cancerpatients in theirfights.

In the meantime,Tracy will be one of13 female cancersurvivors who willbe appearing in the2016 Algoma Dis-trict Breast Cancer Survivor calendar, due to be released thisweek. The photography models come from all walks of lifethroughout the Sault Ste. Marie area. The fundraising calen-dar will sell for $20 with the proceeds going to … none otherthan ‘Tracy’s Dream’!

“All of the ladies here today are an inspiration for everyonefacing this horrible disease,” she said in a Sault Star interviewduring the photography session.

The calendar will also include important dates for cancer-fighting events, such as the Terry Fox Run and Run for theCure, inspirational poems and the resources available forcancer patients and their families. Each of the models will befeatured in 3 photos and each had their choice of what typeof outfit they’d wear for the calendar. An avid angler, Tracychose a ‘fishing’ theme for her shots. “I feel when I fish I’mfree.” she said. She also quickly adds how honoured she feelsto be part of the calendar project … and as to having herfund named as the beneficiary of the proceeds, she can’t seemto express herself beyond “overwhelmed”.

The fundraising calendar idea came from Shirley Pulkkinen,a social worker at the hospital whose sister was featured in a

REMEMBRANCE DAY MARKS one of the most importantdates on the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 374’s calendar, and rightly so. Residents of St. Joseph Island and the nearbynorth shore turned out at 10 am for wreath laying services inHilton Beach, Richards Landing and Port Finlay, followed at10:45 am by the Remembrance Day service at the LegionHall.

The hall was filled near to capacity as people from the com-munity were joined by Legion members and Canadian Forcessoldiers, resplendent in their uniforms, all turning out to ho-nour our veterans, past and present and to remember those

who had fallen in the serv-ice of their country. Thefront four rows of the hallwere filled with localschoolchildren, who hadbeen bussed in to take partand to learn a little moreabout this so-importantremembrance.

After formally recognizingour local veterans, Legion

President ReverendHugh Hamilton ledthe service, under-scored by the dra-matic crash andconcussion of a gunsalute by the 49thField Regiment ofthe Royal Canadian Artillery.

The service was further augmented by the laying ofseveral wreaths commissioned by local municipalities, businesses, organizations and caring individuals, eachbeing escorted by a white-gloved Legion member. Thewreaths eventually filled all across the room in front of

Another highlight was the presence of ournewly re-elected Member of Parliament CarolHughes, who brought greetings from her col-leagues in the House of Commons. After heropening remarks, Ms. Hughes specifically ad-dressed the children, asking how many ofthem had jumped in surprise when the can-non had fired. Several hands sheepishly wentup. She then went on to point out how peace-ful a country we live in. “There are many chil-dren … many people, who go to bed at night, and are not sure if they’ll wake up to in themorning … there are children who hear gun-fire every day. So that is what we’re here for –to remember the people who fought for ourcountry so we can live in peace.”

Trevor Tchir in ConcertSaturday, November 28thBy Jody Wildman

TREVOR TCHIR UNITES the sounds and images ofCanada’s rural and urban spaces. Based in Edmonton, Ottawa, and now Sault Ste. Marie, Tchir has played his original songsto audiences across the country for the past eighteen years.

His music, which has been featured regularly on CBC, CKUA,and college radio, tells stories of the people who work andlove in Canada’s pulsing cities and austere hinterlands. In re-viewer Mary Christa O’Keefe’s words, “Tchir’s lyrics are popu-lated with characters who are both universal and intimate…In Tchir’s hands place, time and relationships become charac-ters, too, with their own agendas and idiosyncrasies...His alle-giance is to the time-honoured art of evoking emotionthrough storytelling.”

Check him out for yourself on you tubeat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJaPqjdMfKc.

This show for the ‘Just Passing Through’ series will featureTrevor on solo acoustic guitar and vocals. Tchir released hisfourth album, ‘Sky Locked Land’, in 2009. He also holds a PhDin Political Science and is a full time faculty member at Al-goma University.
