Evolution of SharePoint

Born in 2001

Evolved as collaboration platform adopted by many large organizations

Required extensive server infrastructure for on-premise installations

Major versions: 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 (current) and 2016 (planned)

SharePoint & Office 365

In 2011, SharePoint got bundled with Office 365 Suite (Cloud)– MS Office– Outlook (Exchange)– Skype for Business– SharePoint– OneDrive

SharePoint can still be acquired as an on-premises solution

Since SharePoint Online doesn’t require infrastructure investments by organizations, it’s become affordable

Document Library

Add a Document (via Upload button)

Add Multiple Documents (via Drag & Drop)– Limit of 100 files at a time (“classic” library only)

– Can’t drag and drop folders (“classic” library only)

Edit Document Properties + Bulk Edit (Quick Edit)– Bulk Edit works only with flat list view (not grouped)

Download a Document

Viewing a document without Download

Open in Windows Explorer– Works with Internet Explorer Browser only

– Doesn’t work well with really large document libraries

Page 19: SharePoint Beginner Training for End Users

sharepointmaven.com @gregoryzelfondsharepointmaven.com @gregoryzelfond

Document Library, cont’d

Edit Documents– Edit using Office Online– Edit using Office Desktop

Version Control– Major versions

Concept of co-authoring (Word only) Concept of Check-in/Check-out Sync library to desktop (via OneDrive)
