USD is one of only two Catholic universities in the United States to have a School of Peace Studies. Within the School is the Institute for Peace and Justice, where the conference will be held. The institute works internationally to “support individuals and organizations to build more peaceful and just societies.” Our conference, The Heart of the Peacemaker, will feature a presentation by Rev. William R. Headley, founding Dean of the School of Peace Studies, and a panel discussion by the “Women Peacemakers,” one of the programs offered in the School of Peace Studies. The SDASH Board encourages you to take advantage of this opportunity to explore the School and meet with fellow alums from the Western Region. Once again, our Jazz Supper will be held in La Jolla, on September 11th. This is the event that raises funds for the RSCJ Oakwood Retirement Center in Atherton, CA and, a scholarship for a SAVE THE DATES Network of Sacred Heart Schools gradu- ate attending USD. The Jazz Supper is open to all Sacred Heart alums and their guests. We hope all of you will save the date for this special evening. As students of RSCJ we share a global and unique bond, a bond of solidarity and spirituality. In San Diego, the ASH gathers in various parishes each first Friday, to pray for vocations and a cure for cancer. Please join us and pray for these intentions. In closing, this is my last letter as President of the San Diego ASH Board. I am honored and humbled to have had the opportunity to serve this community. The Board members and Sr. Rodee have sustained me, taught and encouraged me numerous times. I cannot thank each of them enough as words do not express fully the gratitude in my heart. And a special “thank you” to all of you in the community for your support and partici- pation in our events. Dear Alumnae and Alumni,

As fall approaches, the San Diego ASH is honored to host the ASH Western Regional Conference this October 21 – 22, to be held at University of San Diego. USD is one of only two Catholic universities in the United States to have a School of Peace Studies. Within the School is the Institute for Peace and Justice, where the conference will be held. The institute works internationally to “support individuals and organizations to build more peaceful and just societies.” Our conference, The Heart of the Peacemaker, will feature a presentation by Rev. William R. Headley, founding Dean of the Schoolof Peace Studies, and a panel discussionby the “Women Peacemakers,” one of theprograms offered in the School of PeaceStudies. The SDASH Board encouragesyou to take advantage of this opportunityto explore the School and meet withfellow alums from the Western Region.

Once again, our Jazz Supper will be held in La Jolla, on September 11th. This is the event that raises funds for the RSCJ Oakwood Retirement Center in Atherton, CA and, a scholarship for a

Sara Finn

Sara Finn, graduate of Clifton Convent of the Sacred Heart and Maryville College, passed away in Washington, where she had lived in recent years with her husband, Tom. Sara was a dedicated leader in the San Diego Alumnae of the Sacred Heart for many years. She served as AASH national president, 1979-1981, when the national conference was held in San Diego. Sara was also active in her parishes, Mary Star of the Sea and All Hallows in La Jolla and volunteered for other organizations in San Diego including the Juniors of Social Service supporting Bayside Center.

Student Interns

Nine student interns from six of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, serving this summer at St. Madeleine’s Sophie Center are pictured with Sister Rodee, RSCJ, on a tour of USD.

The Network Schools represented were: Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, Bethesda, MD; Convent of the Sacred Heart, New York, NY; Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Bryn Mawr, PA; Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School, St. Louis; MO; Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Newton, MA; Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, Omaha; NE and Josephinum Academy, Chicago IL.

The Board is excited to announce thatour traditional Jazz Supper annual fundraiser is set once again at the Windemere Clubhouse in La Jolla, on Sunday, September 11, 2016, beginning with a wine reception at 5:00 p.m., followed by supper at 6:30 p.m.

The Johnson Trio, a jazz combo, will be playing soft music for an evening to remember with a sumptuous dinner provided by Girard Gourmet, belonging to a Sacred Heart alumna Diane Goedhuys, and her husband, François. Watch for your invitation in the mail, and, plan to join us as we look forward to welcoming you and your guests.

Society of the Sacred Heart General Chapter

The 2016 General Chapter of the Society of the Sacred Heart, which has been in preparation for the past two years, opened on July 7 in Nemi, near Rome. Superior General Kathleen Conan welcomed the 78 delagates and two invited members from 27 provinces and areas. Represent-ing the Province of the United States-Canada are: Sisters Barbara Dawson, Ellen Collesano, Suzanne Cooke, Sheila Smith and Diana Wall.

The delegates will be reflecting and discerning how the Society is called to live its mission into the emerging future. In her Convocation of the Chapter Sr. Conan spoke of the future as “one which calls for creativity, courage and commitment so that God’s immense, tender, strong and merciful love may shape it.” The General Chapter will elect the Superior General and conclude on August 10.

New Members

Sr. Uchenna Oluoha made her first vows on June 3 in the Cathedral Basilica, Halifax with Archbishop Anthony Mancini presiding. The festive liturgy included an offertory procession with Sister’s 2nd grade prayer partners, who danced to her drumming as she sang, “Give the Lord a Generous Gift.” Sr. Uchenna will be living in San Diego, where she will work as a nurse.

Min Ah Cho has been accepted as a novice in the Society, and will begin her novitiate in Chicago in September. Sally Hoban starts her candidate year at a community in St. Louis. Please pray for vocations!
