Share-A-Pet ProgramAboutThe Share-A-Pet Program was established in February 1978 to save the lives ofa number of dogs and cats who were in special need of a “New Leash on Life.”They are selected by Society staff from among those at our three shelters whomwe consider unadoptable due to age, handicap, medical problems, abuse, lengthof stay, etc.The program is designed for animal lovers who would like to helpcontribute towards the care of a specific homeless cat or dog through amonthly donation. Any of these animals are always available to good homes.Allanimals sponsored under this program are neutered, and sent to the AnimalHaven Farm or Kitty City. We guarantee that all dogs and cats are fully inocu-lated, and receive all necessary medical care, as well as proper routine, daily care.

  • Jugs the Pug of LawrencevilleI just can’t help myself - I get carried away! If others come close to you,I’m afraid they must pay. And so I was adopted and soon after returned;my overprotective love was spurned. A dog that loves too much? I’mguilty as charged; but here on The Farm, I’m living large. Once was a time, chivalry was prized; if you sponsor me, you’ll be a hero in my eyes.

Jasmine of NewarkA 9 year-old Newark student tearfully asked his teacherfor help as his father had tossed their 2 cats, one ofwhom was pregnant, outside in 10 degree weather, two days before the arrival of a blizzard. Unfortunately,it took threatening the owner with animal neglect, butin two days both cats were successfully rescued andbrought to AHS. Jasmine and Princess Sara waited sev-eral months for adoption, but without success. Weplaced the bonded pair on the Share-A-Pet Program, but Princess Sara passed away in 2013. Lovely Jasminestill waits. She would be grateful for the warmth of yourhome, but would happily dwell in your heart.

    Page 4

Cid of NewarkWhen I arrived at the shelter I was grimy and thin; lonely and forlornwas the state I was in. But my future looked up when John Bergmannhappened by; I don’t know the reason, but I caught his eye. I traveled toForked River under his wing; and soon had the best of everything. I havea few friends, but could I call you mine? If you don’t mind that I’m deaf,we’ll get along fine!

Backup of North CarolinaI was rescued from North Carolina - a cruel research lab; 30 Beagles, 6cats --we sure had reason to be glad. I’m an affectionate sweetheart, andit was all worth the wait; had I not been rescued, I can only imagine myfate. I’m in Kitty City and living it up in style; I’m waiting for your visit soI might beguile. I’ve come such a long way so your heart I might win, ormaybe your home ... and I could just settle in.

Read more about our Share-A-Pets at ahscares.org, where we are now adding videos

so you can see them in action!

  • Duggan the JindoI arrived as a stray back in 2009, so you know I’ve been waiting quite along time. Adopted out once, I twice got away; I wasn’t returned tothem - I’d already been a stray! I’m a Korean Jindo; there aren’t too manyof my breed, but an experienced dog handler is what I would need. I’ma clever girl and affectionate, too. Won’t you come visit? I’ll go walkingwith you. Do you have a warm heart? It’s what I’m longing for; a smileand some kindness ; who’d ever want more?

ApolloIn South Jersey I was picked up as a stray; coming herewas the start of many brighter days. I was 7-1/2 back in2014; a loving home was always my dream. When I ar-rived I had all the signs and scars, of a dog forgotten insomeone’s back yard. Yet staff was amazed at my gen-tlemanly demeanor; I sit so politely, I’m a true Dober-man leaner. Other dogs and cats? I just don’t want toshare; so I’d need to be your one and only if you really-care. Or ... just sponsor me!

    Page 5

Pep of South Toms RiverI remember the date - November 2005; so thankful I was rescued, sohappy to be alive. A neglect and abuse victim of someone who didn’tcare; that person shouldn’t have been allowed to have me there. Butonce all fixed up, I began my wait; each day I look hopefully at every vis-itor’s face. Will it be me? Is today MY day? So far no one’s invited me tostay. Will it be you? Will this be OUR day? I’m closing my eyes and wish-ing ... is it you who’ll invite me to stay?

JasperIt was 2008, in the middle of the night. Those who couldn’t keep mehoped what they did was right. They placed me at the shelter door witha note; “My name is Jasper, please find me a home.” I was 5 or 6 then; themath is easy to do; I’m still longing for love, to be cuddled by you. Staffsays I’m a winner and give lots of affection; sponsor or adopt me - justmore than honorable mention.

“The smallest feline is a masterpiece.” ~Leonardo DaVinci

  • Page 6

Buddy the Snoring BeagleBuddy’s been adopted and Buddy’s been returned, though it’s not really his love that was spurned. It wasseparation anxiety and snoring too loud; It’s not his faulthe causes insomnia in a crowd! Then came the homethat we thought would stick; they knew that he snored, that should do the trick. He was sadly returned at theripe age of eight; his snoring so loud, they could not tol-erate. Won’t you sponsor Buddy? He’s as sweet as youplease; but his engine runs loud when he’s catchingsome ZZzzzz’s.

Bernie of NewarkCovered with burns is how I arrived. They suspected it was cruelty, andI was glad to be alive. The burns healed on their own, but poorly, in-deed; they’d festered, were infected and of treatment were in need.Medical staff did a great job and, gave me plenty of attention; theyhealed me so well, they deserve special mention. I was happy andhealthy but a little perplexed; I couldn’t help but wonder what would benext. Kitty City was to be my exciting destination. If on the love train, won’t you please get off at my station? Kozy and Tupelo Honey of of Tennessee

For a second chance, we traveled many miles; we’re hoping our storywill bring you a smile. Just the first part is sad, as our owner passed away;our time had run out in the shelter where we stayed. No one wanted toadopt us because one of us is blind; AHS opened their doors and said,“No one here will mind ... Come right in! Make yourself at home!” So wepacked up our bags and to New Jersey we’ve come. Kozy is 7 and hehas no sight; I’m Tupelo, I’m 8 and I make sure he’s allright. We’ve beentogether ever since we were pups; if you want to adopt, they won’t splitus up. But open your heart and we’ll fit in just fine; a perfect ending toKozy’s and my rhyme,

Can’t have a pet where you live? Love animals but are allergic to them? No time for a pet right now?

That’s why the Share-A-Pet Program is perfect for you!

Sponsor whichever animal appeals to you - come downand visit at your lesisure - walk your sponsored dog, sit with your kitty -

    It’s a win-win for everyone!

  • Page 7

Dorie of NewarkMy babies and I were homeless strays; the people were kind, and said wecould stay. But life in a warehouse is dicey for a cat; I jumped high andlow, now on this, now on that. My tail got cut by one of their machines;it didn’t end up a very pretty scene. So they brought me and my kids tothe Society for care; my tail properly amputated, stitched then and there. My kittens soon found homes of their own; but what to do with Mama, already grown? It was decided I’d do great here in Kitty City; won’t youfall in love with this sweet Share-A-Pet kitty?

ChelseaIn 2013, there was a drug and dogfighting bust; I wasone of several pits rescued from a life so unjust. Each ofus suffered with injuries and scars; we spent our liveschained up in a yard. Each of my legs had been fracturedat some time; so my walk is a bit awkward, but I getalong fine. Although I’ve suffered greatly, here I’mtreated like a queen; I hope I will never wake up fromthis dream. I’m a real people-person, other animals notso much; come visit and I’ll happily melt at your touch.

Sammie of NewarkI was found on a city street in July 2009, unable to move. Medical testsrevealed no cause for my condition, but with plenty of care and treat-ment, I came around. However, I did suffer permanent neurologicaldamage, and am sometimes unsteady on my feet. I was adopted a cou-ple times but they brought me back because I had accidents. I couldn’thelp it. It was decided it’s best I stay here with my buddy Nigel and myhuman friends. Could you be my sponsor? It would mean so much.

Romeo of Forked RiverRomeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Well, Im waiting right herefor your love and affection! An abandoned kitten found by the side ofyon road, I’ve grown up here in this gracious abode. But that, you see,was back in 2008; too many years for love I dost wait. My knees less thanperfect, the patellas luxate; with physical therapy, I’ve been feeling great.Might you have room in fair home or kind heart; for a romantic fellowwho seeks love’s start.

  • Page 8

Patton of AndoverA shelter was closing and for me, there was no home in sight; AHS tookme in and my future looked bright. Soon they discovered I had somedisagreeable ways; I was afraid of the leash, but staff wasn’t fazed. Theywere so very patient, and I came around; but I secretly know that I’mthe top hound! I’ve modeled some costumes, posed with a ball andchain -- I did it for love -- so you’d remember my name.

TwilightTwilight and her best friend Tiny were once the beloved companions ofa long-time employee of Popcorn Park. When our faithful friend andemployee developed cancer, she kept them both until she could nolonger physically care for the twosome. It was an emotionally heartwrenching decision to give up her loving ladies, as well as emotional forus as it involved someone near and dear to our hearts. After awhile Tinywas adopted. Twilight has now been with us since 2010. Our blackbeauty would love nothing more than your taking her in and chershingher. If that is not meant to be, she would like you to sponsor her, comevisit, and let her enjoy your lap.

Linda Blair of NewarkSeems so long ago they gave me my name, after the ac-tress of “Exorcist” fame. I’m not possessed, nor guilty ofsin; it’s just weird positions my body gets in. A brokenheart and a stiff rear leg were found, but stranger stillwas how I turned my head around! I can rotate it nearly180 degrees, a pretty weird talent, everyone agrees.Once I’d been loved but was dropped off at the door;it’s hard when you don’t have love anymore. But don’tgo running and call a priest; I just need your home ... oryour heart, at least.

Nigel of NewarkAbandoned I was in Newark’s Independence Park; not the freeedom Iwanted, especially after dark! Rescued by AHS, I was so grateful andsweet; place me in a home? I’d growl and nip for a treat. It was then de-cided since the staff I adored, that adoption efforts would be made nomore. Was this my plan all along? Did I get it right? I’d say this is one dogwho’s pretty bright! But please be my sponsor -- I’m not such a bad boy;it’s just love from afar I suggest you enjoy.

  • Cupcake of North CarolinaAn online plea was sent out - my time was up; in a NCshelter, I was an endangered pup. When I’d come in, myskin barely covered my bones, clearly I’d been left fartoo often alone. Popcorn Park responded - they’d takeme in, so this shelter rejoiced and jumped all in. Theytook me to a local vet and found I had anemia, andheartworm and worms did abound. Thanks to every-one my life was saved; the path to a happy new life waspaved. Now Mickey and I work with staff at the zoo;I’m an official helper in this life so new. Sponsor and visit,or perhaps make me yours; kisses and hugs are my fa-vorite “chores!”

    Page 9

Carolina of North CarolinaIn a research lab, I was a victim of hate, one of hundreds subjected to acruel fate. What could an innocent cat do to deserve such a hell? Some-one filmed it with the intent to tell. Staff ’s crimes were revealed, but wewere in danger; someone needed to find us a real future-changer. I amone of 6 cats and 35 Beagles AHS had taken. We were relieved and grate-ful that we were not forsaken. A long ride to “home”, love and safety atlast; sponsor or adopt me - I’ve let go of the past.

Jezebel of WaretownJezebel was one of a stunning pair of Husky mixes. She ahd her bestfriend, Rocky, were adopted to a wonderful home, but the man becameill and could no longer care for them. With a heavy heart, he returnedboth to the Society with a small bequest. That was in 2006, when Jezebelwas 2 years old and Rocky was 4. With no offers for adoption, we addedthem to the Share-A-Pet program, and they were happy together untilRocky passed away of bone cancer in 2012. Ever so patiently, Jezebel stillwaits ... your heart, your home ... she just longs to be loved.

Popeye of ArkansasI was rescued from a Class B dealer , a terrible place -- cruelty and neg-lect were always the case. Our rescuers took those of us who’d man-aged to survive; all that happened back in 2005. I came with 13 otherswho all found homes of their own; guess I was meant to stay, so here Ihave grown. My eyes are now cloudy, my face getting grey; I’m cher-ished by staff each and every day. Might you open your heart? It’s nevertoo late. I’m still waiting for that one forever date.

  • These two handsome boys arrived atour Newark shelter separately, butwere perfect kennel mates. We werethrilled when a well-screened adopterwanted to adopt them together. However, a routine follow-up by staffrevealed the adopter had lied and oneof the two was being used as a guarddog in Newark - so we repossessedhim! Our ACO then followed theadopter to find the other dog in Har-rison - and just like Operation Repoon TV, we repo’d him, too!

On the Share-A-Pet Program, Augie and Cash just want to share your love. They have nodesire to guard anything, and probably never did, but they’d like to be sure you get lots ofdoggie attention. Our handsome boys came to us in 2011 and would be happy to curl upin your heart or in your home, but each will insist on bringing the other along. Have a lit-tle room for two big lovable guys?

    Page 10

Jaws of WeehawkenLuckily, Jaws was rescued in time. He suffered brutalbeatings from his owner who trained him by bludg-eoning him about the head and face. A tenant in thebuilding had once observed this, but when he cameupon the dog in the building basement, swollen andinfected, he called the police, who then called us. De-spite two fractures to the head and two broken teeth,Jaws showed only happiness at the attention paid himby medical staff. It was also discovered that Jaws is veryhard of hearing - perhaps caused by the beatings orperhaps he was beaten because he couldn’t hear theman’s commands. For all Jaws has gone through, he de-serves loving sponsors. Could that be you?

    Cash and Augie of Newark

Sybil of NewarkI still have a plan to take over the world ... one Society staffer and theirpets at a time. When just a teenager, I was cruelly left in a box wrappedin plastic on the shelter’s doorstep one night, (verified by video cam-era!) But now I’m on a mission to make the world safe for all other aban-doned cats! I POUNCE on unsuspecting staff when they go by, andLEAP onto their dogs in the hall. Soon it will be just me and other catsin need. Bwah, ha, ha! But wait ... how will we find homes? If you weremy sponsor you could probably help me see things a little more clearly. There’s still time!

“If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die Iwant to go where they went.” ~ Will Rogers

  • Cricket of KentuckyIt was 2012 when we four pets arrived; sadly, our devoted owner was nolonger alive. We came to the Society, her will was made out - two dogsand two cats, happy to be safe, no doubt. Since that time, my friendBaby passed on; Heidi and Little Bit found homes of their own. And thatleaves me, little Cricket, still waiting ... a warm lap of my own I’m still an-ticipating. I so love dreaming of a spot of sun; could you choose me asyour most special one?

    Page 11

MickeyI had a happy life, adopted when a pup; but therewere family problems and I was given up. At 3-1/2 I was hardly over the hill; but who knew I hadan important job to fill? With my pal, Cupcake, Ihelp the Popcorn Park crew; I work in the barnand out in the zoo. Now this doesn’t mean that Idont need you -- trust me --I really do! I thrill atyour sponsorship - your visits are divine! And Iwouldn’t mind hearing, “Mickey, would you bemine?”

Bear & Peanut of Pine BeachFirst they neglect us and then turn us in, as if we’d created the problemswith our skin! All we ever wanted was love and good care; but blamedfor a child’s allergies just wasn’t fair. Staff didn’t mind if we were so verythin; “Wait til you see the shape you’ll soon be in!” With vet care andgood meals and spa days, too? We’ve become so handsome and readyto meet you! We’re two active boys but have manners quite nice; fit usboth in your home is our best advice. But we love to be sponsored, socome on down! Put on our leashes and we’ll show you around.

Bear and Peanut of Pine Beach

  • Page 12

Darby the Deaf DobermanFound wandering in the woods, this very sweet Doberman may havebeen abandoned or simply escaped, but no one came to claim her. Anexamination discovered that she was both deaf and neurologically im-paired. Although she was adopted out for a period of time, her multi-ple problems were too difficult for the owner to cope with, and Darbyreturned. One of the sweetest dogs on the Animal Haven Farm, she hasthe affection of other dogs and staff, and loves to meet people who ac-cept her handicaps and see her heart. Will you be one of those specialpeople and sponsor Darby?

Tiny of KeansburgTurned in as a “stray” - well, that was a lie; I supposemy owners thought they were sly. It soon was dis-covered I had four tiny pups; not even weaned, andshould never have been given up. “Free to a goodhome” was how they were placed, but the Societymanaged to get 3 back in haste. My babies and I wereso happy to reunite, and soon they were adopted tostart their own life. Then came my health check as Ineeded more vet care, and next thing you know, I waslighter than air! I’m happy and bubbly and all I longfor, is for you to come love me and walk in that door.

Donnie of South CarolinaMy mom and I were driving up this way, but she became ill and the am-bulance took her away. To Popcorn Park they brought me to stay; rela-tives were contacted, but had not one word to say. Guess this is myhome now, so what did I do? Put on my supervisor hat so staff knowswhat’s what and who’s who! Oh, there’s my friend Jasper, perhaps weshould nap; a basket is lovely, but I’d still love your lap.

Wylie of RobbinsvilleCan you believe I’ve been here since May, 2008? What does a fella haveto do to get a first date? I was found on the highway, but I’m not thatkind of guy; I’m really a homebody who got left high and dry. Just ask thestaff, I’m as sweet as can be -- is there somebody out there who couldfall in love with me?

Since our last Share-A-Pet booklet in 2012, we have seen quite a few Share-A-Pets find loving homes ... twenty-nine to be exact! And we are so grateful to all of you have have opened your homes to these wonderful an-imals. In that same space of time, we have lost some of our beautiful longtime residents as well as a few neweradditions to the program who were elderly or ill, and we thank all of you who reached out and took all ofthese cats and dogs into your hearts. They knew the best of care with us and had staff who loved them astheir own. They will all be missed.

Red and Dewey of Lakewood Red and Dewey are survivors, two among thirty dogs living in a horrifc hoarding situa-tion in Lakewood, NJ. AHS’ Popcorn Park shelter took five of the retriever mixes, all se-verely matted and had been living in filth. It took 4-5 hours to shave down each dog, andthen began the medical evaluations where many more health issues were discovered. Itwas found that Dewey, right, is nearly blind from a congenital problem, and because hehas bonded with Red, we decided to keep the two together and add them to the Share-A-Pet Program. They are both sweet and gentle, and getting past their shyness thanksto plenty of time with staff. Could you invite these two to be your special fellas? Yourhome or heart would do just fine.
