‘… we cannot conclude that the arrangements for training new teachers are value for money. The Department will also need to show that the arrangements are more cost effective than alternative expenditure, for instance on improving retention’

Issues from the Breakout sessions

Recruit, Train, Develop, Retain.

1.Successful forms of CPD are hard to do – require change of system and culture2. Successful CPD needs systemic support. Time ..3.Video can be used to allow Joyce and Showers and remove system barriers4.Film club model allows non-threatening discussion as precursor to feedback/coaching5. Change is a process not an event6. Culture of trust and needs to be echoed in both classroom and professional learning7. Time and budget needs to be prioritized – reallocated to what works8. Teachers need to feel safe with professional learning

Issues from coaching and NQTs

Recruit, Train, Develop, Retain.

1. In ear (other forms of coaching) need pre-condition of professional efficacy – trust, empathy and involving pupils

2. Because of the programme, NQT felt wanted and involved3. Interest and need for bespoke CPD for your school and for NQts 4. What is effective CPD? Collaboration leading to solidarity and

accountability5. Successful coaching is a whole school initiative6. Too often, teacher learning is divorced from pupil learning7. Need to claim OUR knowledge base – coaching is one way of doing this8. Trust and relationships are key to effective coaching

Issues from Recruitment and Retention

Recruit, Train, Develop, Retain.

1. Confused routes into teaching – need to simplify2. Love the one you have3. Offer a personalized development programme that makes people feel

valued4. Create the necessary structures and plan accordingly to allow

professional learning to happen5. No blame culture 6. Freedom as professionals7. Even great schools have difficulty in recruitment – maybe too many

subjects?8. Why are men and ethnic minorities under represented

Issues from school led research and development of culture

Recruit, Train, Develop, Retain.

1. Coaching is critical to creating a learning and development culture2. We are constantly learning3.Learning must take place in the classroom, over time with others4.Rather than being disruptive – to having the time to partake in professional learning should be the thing that IS disruptive5.Accountability is about outcomes not methods. Need to build this into process of professional learning6. Co-evaluation of knowledge as well as co-creation7. Accessing and sharing the tacit knowledge of teachers
