Dear Stakeholders,

On behalf of the Management Committee of Shan You Counselling Centre, I am pleased to present our 19th annual report for the financial period ended 31 March 2014.

2013 was a very significant year for Shan You. In our efforts to promote our Mindfulness-In-Singapore programmes, we continued to train and grow the pool of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) trainers in Singapore. As part of our partnership with Oxford Mindful-ness Centre (OMC), we invited two highly ex-perienced practitioners and teachers of MBCT from OMC to conduct a 5-Day MBCT Teacher Development Course in Singapore in July 2013.

In the course of a year, we also organised several mindfulness programmes. One is the “Live the Moment” Pilot Programme funded by the Health Promotion Board (HPB). From April to November 2013, we successfully de-livered four runs of mindfulness training to the elderly residents of Eunos Crescent. We also participated in “HPB Enrich Your Mind Learning Festival” in October 2013, where we delivered two experiential workshops: “Vitamin Mindful-ness for a Healthier Mind and Immune System” and “Taster to Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy” (MBCT). The event was jointly organised by HPB and the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) in commemoration of World Mental Health Day 2013. Following this, in March 2014, we received full-intake for a run of the 8-week MBCT course.

To further raise awareness of mindfulness and its applications towards helping people with their well-being, our psychologist had also been invited to schools to conduct introductory work-shops on mindfulness, making the practice available to the community, educators and youth.

We look forward to continuing with the meaningful work as a team as well as and in collaboration with others.

Clinical Service Clinical service remains as our core service. This service is focused on helping clients understand the issues they faced and find their own best way to respond. Our behavioural health counselling is available to those with stress-related health and mental health issues as well as those with interpersonal relationship issues. We continue to promote mental health awareness though public talks and seminars.

With the support of our clinical supervisors and advisors, our clinical team strengthened their capabilities in our service delivery to clients.

Wellness Community: Social Service and Community OutreachOur Wellness Community at Eunos Crescent has continued to expand its activities to engage our silver citizens. Our goal is to strength-en intergenerational bonds through social activities, events and outings. We also conduct programmes to promote active ageing and ensure our silver citizens remain mentally and physically active as well as socially engaged.

In 2013, we initiated two programmes, which aim to promote the physical, mental and emotional well-being of our silver citizens – Creative Art and Musical Exercise.

For 20 years, our Food Rations Distribution Service has been one of our ways of engaging the community directly. Every month we provide this service to about 300 families. In FY2013/14, we delivered 3,410 food packs. The majority of the recipients are low-income families and the elderly who have little or no social support. In FY2013/14, Shan You received a donation of $300,000 from NTUC Club and nEbO. The funds were raised through nEbO‘s Love Moment, which aims to encourage youths to care for the less fortunate. The donation will be channeled towards the Food Rations Distribution Programme, the setting up of a thrift shop and a drop-in centre for students.

“Our service users for having faith in us and giving us the opportunity to serve; our staff members for helping us achieve our objectives through sheer dedication and excellent teamwork.”

Pg 8

Page 9: Shan You Counselling Centre Annual Report 2014

Our Service Commitment We are committed to training and developing our staff, in order to serve our service users better. Our psychologist and counsellors have been given opportunities to receive MBCT training overseas and locally. In FY2013/14, our counsellors attended the MBCT 5-day Teacher Development Course conducted by trainers from OMC, after which, our clinical team continues to receive supervision provided by the OMC trainers.

Future Direction We will focus on application of Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy to help our service users as well as delivering Mindfulness-based programmes to the community, such as corporations, schools, community-based organisations, etc.

We will continue to work closely with Oxford Mindfulness Centre (OMC) to strengthen the core mindfulness skills. Trainers from OMC will be invited to facilitate more professional workshops. We will continue to create awareness of the benefits of mindfulness to the community. Besides MBCT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) is also our core compe-tence. We will also provide continual training for our clinical team to ensure service quality.

We will introduce new initiatives to meet the need for community-based care services. With the support from nEbO, a thrift shop and a youth drop-in centre will be set up at the Wellness Community.

In Closing Shan You Counselling Centre is able to continue serving the community with the strong support of Community Chest, NCSS, MSF, MCCY, community partners and you - our stakeholders. Donors and volunteers supporting our programmes do more than just providing us with funds; they provide us with trust and encouragement. As in the past years, a section in our Annual Report has been set aside to express our gratitude for the unwavering support we have received.

On behalf of the Management Committee, I wish to express my appreciation and grati-tude to our Clinical Advisors for the profession-al guidance; our service users for having faith in us and giving us the opportunity to serve; our staff members for helping us achieve our objectives through sheer dedication and excellent teamwork.

To my Management Committee colleagues, I thank you for your support and encouragement.

Mindfulness in Singapore

In a fast paced society such as Singapore, is there room for mindfulness and would it become just another fad that passes? What is effective tends to endure time and reaches out in universal ways. Mindfulness has more to do with attention and awareness than slowing down, although at the beginning slowing down is beneficial. Evidence has shown that the best scientists test the practice themselves. As one is open to exploring, clarity is amplfied and more curiosity is sparked for there are so many facets about mindfulness to experience. In fact, defining it as a concept it is help-ful for research. In reality, it extends beyond to the process of discovery about the mind-body – in deed, the experiences that unfolds from moment to moment help in our well-being.

Our collaboration with the Oxford Mindfulness Centre (OMC) begun in 2010, where Professor Mark Williams visited Singapore to conduct a 2-day introduction workshop on Mindfulness-Based Cogni-tive Therapy (MBCT) for professionals and a public talk on The Mindful Way. Since then, in 2011 we had Dr Melanie Fennell and Dr Ann Hackmann from OMC, and in 2012 Dr Christina Surawy and Ms Marie Johansson visiting to conduct more workshops. In July 2013, Dr Christina Surawy and Ms Marie Johansson returned to conduct a MBCT 5-Day Teacher Development Course.

Mindfulness has been featured in various local newspapers such as the Straits Times and Mind Your Body. In particular, the awareness for mindfulness and the potential benefits it can bring to people is beginning to be more widely recognised. Though not new, people are slowly beginning to see that their old ways of seeking happiness and productivity have limits; whereas the ancient wisdom of mindfulness can work wonders. For instance, these are what some participants feedback from our mindfulness outreach and pro-grammes:

“it is very practical practice and can be integrated into our daily lives”

呼吸使我的内心平静”

“it is a way to release stress without relying on external factors”

“The breathing aspect of the workshop has helped me a lot as it made me feel calm and also felt like a huge burden has lifted off my shoulders. This could help me whenever I don’t feel right.”

“The part where it trains ourselves to train our mind. Because it can help me to be more focused on studies”

Pg 17

Page 18: Shan You Counselling Centre Annual Report 2014

“Realizing that we have the ability and the choice in which thoughts we would want to focus in”“It has helped me to accept my anxiety instead of trying to push it away. By accepting my anxiety and treating myself with a bit of kindness, it makes my anxiety a bit more tolerable”.“The programme provided a structure for my mindfulness practice”

Based on evidence, mindfulness has been integrated into the mainstream healthcare and educational system in the UK and United States. It has applications in both clinical aspects as well as potential in the aspect of developing deeper well-being in everyday living. In Singapore, although it has always been present in the spiritual traditions, we may say that we are in the early stages of development in terms of making it secularly accessible. The interest has been steadily growing largely based on people who have experienced it for themselves and experiencing the effects. There has also been increasing expression of interest for local research and requests to work with various populations.

We hope to continue with the meaningful work, in collaboration, in learning and in service to make mindfulness practice available to those that are interested in a healthier way of living.

Professional Training

Pg 22

Page 23: Shan You Counselling Centre Annual Report 2014

The Centre has organised Motivational Interviewing (MI) training since 2005, and to date 994 professionals have attended our workshops and seminars. Coincidently, the MI Conference that the Centre is going to hold in February 2015 will be the first in Singapore and it marks Shan You’s 10th year of introducing MI to Singapore. The current trainer is Dr Joel Porter from New Zealand.

In 2011, Dr Joel Porter wrote in the HMA Blog website article that he told a colleague about coming to Singapore to conduct Motivational Interviewing workshop and “he wondered out loud, “It will be interesting to see how the Singaporeans react to MI.” His comment piqued my curiosity and I asked to him to elaborate on his wondering. He went on to say, “I can see how they might appreciate the ‘directive’ aspects of MI, but I am not sure about the person-centred aspect…because you know Asian people tend to respond better to more directive approaches.” I replied along the lines of, “Really? I didn’t know that.”

It has been five years since that initial trip to Singapore and now having been back to the country seven times to provide MI training to a wide range of mental health, health and corrections organisations he said, “I can assuredly say Singaporeans do appreciate both the person-centred and goal oriented (formerly called directive) aspects of MI. It is nice to see those types of misinformed and over-generalised stereotypes evaporate into thin air.”

The long-term goal we have is to develop MI trainer capacity within the country so that Singaporeans can adapt and develop MI training to best fit their unique cultural landscape.

The professionals who had attended MI training are doctors, psychologists, counsellors, social workers, nurses, case workers, managers, programme directors, university students and others.

The MI training has been held for/at the following organisations: Central Singapore Joint Social Service Centre, James Cook University (Singapore), Institute of Mental Health, Lee Kong Chain School of Business, Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports (now Ministry of Social and Family Development), National Library Board, National Skin Centre, Simei Care Centre, Singapore Armed Services (Psychological Services), Singapore Department of Corrections, Singapore Institute of Technology and Work Development Authority.

Vesak Day 2557th Grand Light Offering The Centre made 255,700 Light offerings from 21-27 May 2013 in Buddha Gaya, India, and dedicating the Light of Enlightenment to all the people it serves and to all the people who join it in the mission to help the distressed. The lightings were put up at the Mahabodhi temple in the place where the Buddha gained enlightenment 2557 years ago. As light in Buddhism symbolises wisdom that dispels darkness of ignorance, one will be inspired on this day to gain wisdom. Virtuous deeds done during auspicious days, such as Vesak, will multiply one’s good deeds many times. Many donors contributed to the event as well as to the Centre’s charitable activities.

Shan You Flag Day 2013On 8 June 2013, hundreds of Shan You volunteers (including staff, students and volunteers) went island-wide to collect donations.

Tok Tok Chiang Fundraising Night 2014Tok Tok Chiang Fundraising Night 2014 was the one of the most anticipated fundraising event organised by Shan You Counselling Centre. More than 600 people came together on 10 January 2014 to appreciate the traditional values and arts of Chinese Opera presented by Mr Nick Shen and his troupe. We were honoured to have Dr Lily Neo, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC, as the guest-of-honour for the event.

Tokens of appreciation were presented by Dr Lily Neo and Dr Jenny Quek to the following sponsors: Aik Lian Metal & Glazing Pte Ltd, Chequered Flag Media, DNV GL Oil & Gas, Kepmedia International Pte Ltd, NTUC FairPrice Foundation, Photo Inc PPL, Shun Zhou Hardware Pte Ltd, Tai Pei Yuen Temple, Tok Tok Chiang Events Management, Tan Ean Kiam Foundation, Toni International and TOTE Board.

Shan You “Give An Ang Bao” Chinese New Year ProjectIn celebration of the Chinese New Year in 2014, the Centre sent out mailers during Chinese New Year as part of its effort to raise funds for our community service projects and programmes in 2014.

Collaboration with NeboThe Centre received a donation of $300,000 from NTUC Club and nEbO in January. The funds were raised through nEbO’s L.O.V.E. movement which aims to encourage youths and the public to spare a thought and care for the less fortunate. The donation will go towards the Centre’s food rations distribution service to needy families and individuals, the setting up of thrift shop and a student drop-in centre.
