Preface
This volume is the end-product of "Shallow Lakes 98", an International Conference on: "Trophic Interactions in Shallow Freshwater and Brackish Waterbodies" held from 3- 8 August 1998 in Blossin near Berlin (Germany) and stands in the tradition of former meetings in Silkeborg ( 1992) and Mikolajki ( 1995). The conference in Blossin was organised by the Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB Berlin) and the Technical University Cottbus (BTUC). It was attended by more than 150 participants from about 20 countries. With a grant from the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" several participants from mid- and east European countries could be invited. The conference was further supported by the State Office of Environment (Brandenburg).
The organisers tried to offer a meeting with an acceptable price and tried to establish a good working atmosphere. We hope that the participants judged these efforts a success. However, this was only a precondition for good contributions and discussions for which this volume is a testimony. Much experience was presented on the verification of the dual-stable states of shallow lakes, a growing number of lakes have been studied and many factors were reported which could have an influence on feed-back controls. Although the knowledge about responses to nutrient reduction measures and biomanipulation has been growing in the last decade, little is known about ways of re-establishing macrophyte communities in eutrophic lakes. Most of these lakes have lost these communities in the past and one aim is to transform these lakes from a turbid to a clear water state with macrophyte stands. Also management practices are generating new theories on lake ecosystem functioning. Therefore, management aspects have not been separated from more theoretical papers in this volume.
The conference was structured into different topics: Macrophytes, Nutrient loading, Phytoplankton, Littoralpelagic interactions, Zooplankton, Management, Benthos, and Sediment-water interactions. Many topics were introduced by the following keynote speakers: A. Hillbricht-Ilkowska, B. Kronvang, L. Mur, L. G. Rudstam, R. Reddy, J. Padisak, J. Madgwick, and A Herzig.
We are thankful to the organising committee which was also responsible for the review process of the manuscripts. We are greatly indebted to: Rita Adrian, Horst Behrendt, Ji:irg Gelbrecht, Frank Gervais, Michael Hupfer, Thomas Mehner, Andreas Nicklisch, Hendrik Schubert, Christian Steinberg. Numerous other people helped in different ways in the organisation, to give prominence only to Katrin Lehmann, Beate Muller (secretary) and Hans-Peter Kozerski for organisation of the unforgettable canoe races on Wolziger See. The "Shallow Lakes 2001" conference will take place in Hungary at Lake Balaton.
